Re: Introducing My Dexta

Jerry I replaced the loom a few years ago and recently changed to an alternator so most of the electrical niggles are now sorted (didn't bother with modern indicators etc as it's never on the road). There is always something else though - last month the pto started occasionally disengaging when unde...

Introducing My Dexta

https://i.postimg.cc/4xLHDprH/IMG-20200527-163109.jpg She is a 1958 Dexta that I've had for 6 or 7 years and is the main workhorse on the Croft doing all kinds of work. I guess a lot of older tractors mostly get used for lighter duties but ours still has to, occasionally, put in a shift of hard gra...

Re: Front wheel bearing & spindle

If you don't have equipment for reaming the bushes properly and you're happy to be a bit 'agricultural' then a fine flapper wheel attached to a drill will do the job well enough to get a reasonable fit.

Wiring Question

Hi all I am currently converting my Dexta from a generator to an alternator. I know that most of the wires in the control box are now redundant and have traced them to satisfy myself as to what they are and do however, there is currently a wire that goes from the A1 terminal (on the control box) to ...

Re: Silly quesetion #4 - how big a mower ?

Actually I just checked mine and see it is 1.45m, I must have been thinking of something else when I thought it was 1.25.

I also noticed that you have a Super Dexta, mine is a standard Dexta so I have a few hp less than you.

I don't think you will have any problem at all with a 1.45m flail mower.

Re: Oil leak advice

If anyone is interested I replaced the sump seals (gasket and Cork) and the leak seems to have stopped.

It was no problem taking the sump off without splitting the tractor or taking much off, just made sure the clutch housing and engine were well supported.

Re: Fordson Dexta Diesel oil leak

#5
Have you got it in draft mode? There is a lever under the seat which switches it from draft (either fully up or fully down (simplified a bit)) to position mode (height of linkage is relative to where the lever is).

Re: Silly quesetion #4 - how big a mower ?

I run a 1.25m flail mower on my Dexta. No problem at all with weight or when mowing grass.

When mowing really, really thick rushes then it has occasionally struggled for power.

Oil leak advice

Hi I'm leaking black engine oil from my 1958 Dexta and would like to check people's advice before starting to take things to bits. She has black oil coming from the weep hole at the join between the engine and clutch. Last summer I split the tractor and replaced the rope seal on the crankshaft but i...

Re: Snowchains

I ended up ordering a set from a shop in Estonia for about €250 including delivery. They are just basic ladder type chains but they seem pretty heavy duty, in fact I have now discovered that there is not enough clearance under one of the wings for them so I will have to make a few adjustments (altho...

Re: Snowchains

Yes Ken, without a front linkage we plough snow backwards. And yes, you get a sore neck before long. Using the Dexta I also find that the steering is not as precise as it could be when you are reversing a snowplough. Well I've received one quote for a set of chains, £750 (including tax and delivery)...

Re: Snowchains

Thanks I did see them and have e-mailed them but they were the only people that I could find that do tractor chains. I guess with 4WD being standard in tractors nowadays, less snowy winters and farmers no longer getting contracts to clear snow from roads that there is very little demand for chains i...

Snowchains

I am on the hunt for some snowchains for my Dexta and am struggling to find them anywhere. The closest I have come is my neighbour who said "I used to have a set for a Dexta ............ but gave them to to scrap merchant a few years ago". I wish he hadn't told me that!! Does anyone know where to ge...

Re: DVLA Problems

Thanks for that advice.

It is tempting to give up as I don't really need it, I just thought it would be nice to have it registered properly however I will see about getting in touch with the Ford and Fordson club first.

DVLA Problems

Hi I have had my Dexta for a few years now and finally got round to applying for a V5 registration (It didn't come with one when I bought it but had been previously registered). After a bit of correspondence with the DVLA and having sent them photos of the serial numbers and casting codes they have ...

Re: Generator Wiring

I have finally gotten a rainy day to spend in the shed on the tractor and have fitted a new wiring loom. I checked the voltage output on the dynamo and, wired properly, it is 3v at idle and 5.5v at speed which seems too low. With the dynamo shorted between the 2 terminals the voltage (between the dy...

Thanks for the reply. I will have a go tomorrow at checking the regulator voltage and all the contacts.

I have a new loom and have been trying to match it up with the wiring diagram and then comparing it with the existing wiring before removing the old wiring.

Generator Wiring

Although my Dexta works fine in the electrical department (except for the lights and horn) there are lot of wires that look like they are about to come apart at any minute and so I am going to rewire the whole thing. Before I start taking wires off the tractor I would like to understand what they ar...

Re: Which Plough

I didn't get anything at that sale in the end.
Since then I have picked up a single furrow plough but haven't had a chance to even try hitching it up yet due to being distracted with trying to work out how to get my binder working and having to go to work (such an inconvenience).

Which Plough

I was hoping to buy my first plough at the weekend but am stuck at work so will (hopefully) be sending my good wife to the auction. There are a number of possibly suitable looking ploughs but I don't know much about ploughs and my wife even less. Would any of the following be suitable (or preferred)...

Re: Aux Hydraulics Question

Thanks for the welcome Jerry. Yes, the Aux pipe goes to the back (as in the photo below) where it has a cap and it has an elbow which points forwards as you spotted. I assume the supply to the rear was for something like a hydraulic top link (I think the previous owner used if for match ploughing) b...

Re: Aux Hydraulics Question

Thanks Brian, it is very useful to know why mine looks different from all the pictures of other peoples tractors. The parts list on this site is dated 1959 but seems to show an aux service plate the same as mine (without a flow control knob) including a stud/locknut so was this the original way of h...

Aux Hydraulics Question

I'm new here with a new Dexta and some (probably pretty basic) questions as I find my way around the tractor. The Dexta I have seems to have been set up to run things from the aux hydraulics as shown in the photo. I gather I pull the black knob out to divert oil to the aux pipe (although it is jamme...
