Fordson Super Major Wheel Nut Size

Gents, Does anyone know what size spanner / socket I'll need to undo the rear wheel nuts on my super major please? I'm away from the tractor currently and need to get the wheel off to repair a puncture in the tube. Also I need to clean the rim up as it is extremely corroded which has caused the punc...

Re: My Super major doesn't seem to rev very high

Good suggestion on the air filter, I found it was quite clogged with crap. All cleaned out and freshly filled with oil and she's much happier. Thanks for the advice.

Re: My Super major doesn't seem to rev very high

Cheers for the advice Brian, I'll give it a go. Stupidly I hadn't even thought about a blocked air filter for some reason, yet whenever I service my cars I always change them.

My Super major doesn't seem to rev very high

I look after my Grandfathers 1962 Supermajor and the last time I used it it seemed to loose some revs somewhere. I can only go by ear as the tractor doesn't have a tachometer fitted, but I could have sworn that the revs progressively dropped over the course of the day. I thought that it may have req...

Double acting spool valve

Just out of interest doe anyone know if it is possible to retrofit an aftermarket double acting spool valve to the hydraulics of a super major? I would like to fit a powered tip on the loader that I already have on the Super major. Obviously there wold be some pipework involved as well as fitting a ...

Re: Non starting super major

My Grandad is very happy that his pride and joy lives to fight another day. I'm not so happy as where we use it is quite tight on access and the tractor is really a bit to big to use in that area, we where looking at replacing it with something a smaller overall size but larger engine with a loader ...

Non starting super major

I'd just like to say thanks to the forum. I have the dubious luck of looking after my Grandad's Super Major as I am normally the one that uses it, my Grandad is 91 and can't do everything that he used too. My Grandad had been using the tractor a while ago and when he stopped it it flat out refused t...

Re: Stiff steering in reverse

Thanks for the replies. I have a feeling that my Granddad normally puts 25 psi in the fronts. I'll have to try pumping them up more when he's not around otherwise he'll moan. I thought that it might be the bearings and bushes for the kingpins. I know the pins that hold both the front wheels parallel...

Stiff steering in reverse

My Granddad has a 62 Super Major which I have the dubious pleasure of having to look after / maintain as I am the only one that is allowed to use it as he is getting on a bit - he's 91. Recently I have noticed that the steering is very heavy, almost stiff if i need to turn to the right. It is the sa...

Re: Agriline Power steering kit

Hi Thanks for your reply, I know everything steers well on the tractor without the loader, allbeit a bit heavy. It has the standard cast iron tractor wheels on - 4 rib if I remember correctly. I have replaced the front wheel bearings as I know the old ones where shot. I know that the whole front axl...

Agriline Power steering kit

Hi I have an old supermajor that I have fitted a front loader to so that I can use it around the farm for bits and bobs but the steering is so heavy. The front loader is a horndraulic one. As the steering box has failed once already, (it was cracked to start but I don't think the addition of the fro...

Re: just when I thought it was going well!

Thanks for that info, I've just bought a steering box off of Ebay and am going to refurb it before I put it on the tractor, to make sure that hopefully I don't have to do the job twice.

just when I thought it was going well!

Well I got my Grandads old Super going after rebuilding the bottom end and head. It is running sweet as a nut. Fitted a second hand Horndraulic loader to help empty a horse muck pit. It was all working so well. I then had to replace the wheel bearings on the front as you could see the wheels wobble ...

Super major power steering

Hi, I have just got my super major working again after rebuilding the bottom end of the engine. As I have fitted a front loader to the tractor, my grandad now says that the steering is too heavy for him now and likes the idea of fitting power steering. I know Agriline do a kit. Has anyone ever fitte...

Re: Crank dimensions

I've just rebuilt the bottom end of my major, the crank and con rod journals were both reground and .01 oversize bearings refitted. It now runs with a very steady 40 psi oil pressure all day long. it was well worth the effort and a lot easier to do than I expected. I didn't split the tractor I pulle...

Maybe my major has a different clutch layout, but I'm sure my thrust bearing is on the other side of the claw, I'll double check later to make sure.

Re: FSM timing problem?

Really stupid question as you've probably already checked, but is the govorner diaphragm ok? The FSM I'm working on at the moment had a very simillar problem and it was a split in the rubber diaphragm.

Re: At last a result! just need parts now

Hi, I'm guessing thats how I managed to do the damage. I'm feeling lucky in that I got off lightly with the ammount of damage it did to the engine. I'm just finding it a bit hard trying to locate a new pick up pipe. I might well end up making up a new pick up pipe myself as they seem very elusive to...

At last a result! just need parts now

Well finally got the sump off of the engine and found the reason it seied up. Some how I don't know how I managed it I managed to bend the oil pump pick up pipe when refitting the sump. This caused the pipe to hit number 3 con rod bearing and break off resulting in no oil. On the plus side only numb...

Weight of super major diesel engine

Well, I've got the engine out of my super major, blimey does it weigh a lot. All the ancilliaries are off I've just got to take the clutch and flywheel off so that I can get to the crank and bearings. Just out of interest does anyone know if the engine is light enough to go on one of the heavy weigh...

Re: Low oil pressure

Oh well, I got out to work on the tractor today, I fitted a pressure guage to the oil pressure sensor spot to check the pressure and tried to start the engine. Absolutely nothing, the engine wouldn't even turn over. I've taken the water pump and rad off and the engine appeared to be locked solid. I ...
