Re: Decision Time

Thanks. I'll have to study this a bit but this looks promising for checking out the pump.

Decision Time

I bought my Super Dexta a year ago and had been told that it would just require a bit of work to get running. It was not running at the time - stupid me. After freeing a stuck engine, I found some pitting in the cylinders and virtually no compression. It wouldn't start with starting fluid. So now I ...

Re: Unstuck!

I did some research about rust in the cylinders and decided to go ahead and clean them up a bit with a rotary hone. The surface rust came off very quickly. Then I put some Kroil in each bore and let it sit. I was finally able to get the engine to turn over manually. There is some minor pitting in th...

Re: Unstuck!

I took the rockers out and the valves seem fine. So I moved on to the next step and pulled the head. The front cylinder has a considerable amount of rust around the top, certainly enough to prevent the piston from moving past it. There may be some in the back cylinder but it's almost at the top of i...

Re: Unstuck!

Unfortunately, I still have an engine issue. Turns out that I have some rotation, about 10" (25cm) at the flywheel, which is better than the 1/8" I first measured. But in either direction, it still comes to a stop. Can anybody guess what is allowing that much rotation? Also the injectors are out whe...

Re: Unstuck!

Turns out that there's nothing apparently wrong with the starter. I just wasn't giving it a chance to spin when I'd touch the lead to the pole. So once the rain stops, I'll put the starter back in and see what happens.

Unstuck!

I got a pretty pleasant surprise today when after blasting years of grit and grime off my tractor (and some of the crappy yellow paint that someone used that seems to be attracting yellow jackets), I was able to nudge the flywheel way past previous points with no mechanical stop. Earlier as I was do...

Re: Stuck Engine Part II

I decided that I should do a good cleaning of the engine before proceeding with any other tear down. So that's the first order tomorrow. Jerry, thanks for the advice about starting with the head - definitely sounds easier - except for "Don't forget the inaccessible lower bolt near the block" And I'l...

Re: Stuck Engine Part II

I took the rocker cover off but I don't think its a stuck valve causing the problem. There is either a minimum of play if the valve is closed or the rocker is tight on the valve stem. I would think I would see a valve stem with a whole lot of clearance. So now I have to decide if I should take off t...

Re: Stuck Engine Part II

I did try it with the clutch in and it is no different. I'll keep trying the Kroil but I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to tear into the engine at some point.

Stuck Engine Part II

I took off the starter and am only able to lever the flywheel to turn about 1/8" (3mm) at the circumference. It is a hard stop in either direction and there is a distinct, though not loud, clunk when it stops the small rotation. Does this sound like stuck rings or something else? I figure I'd give i...

Re: Stuck engine, stuck injectors

I have to relate my Aha! moment (or maybe I should say Eureka!) about what size wrenches I need to work on the Dexta. I wanted to get the starter out to try nudging the flywheel and the first nut I worked on had me totally perplexed - my metric and standard wrench were not exactly the right size and...

Re: Stuck engine, stuck injectors

Ben - I take it then that you don't need a specialist familiar with the Dexta to do this work. I've never really worked on a diesel engine. Thanks.

Re: Stuck engine, stuck injectors

Brian,

I had tried pulling it (slowly) but I'll stop that and do the other suggested methods. I'll check out the timing cover inspection for sure.

You anticipated my next question of what to do about the injectors. Thanks for the advice.

Re: Stuck engine, stuck injectors

An update - the Kroil seems to have worked as I was able to gently pry the three injectors out. The tips are covered in soot so I'm thinking they need some attention. I poured the Kroil into the cylinders and will check them each day. One thing I notice is that when I put it into top gear and rock t...

Stuck engine, stuck injectors

Hello, I'm a brand new Dexta owner with a lot of work ahead of me. My wife and I recently bought this tractor being told (and I should have known better as it was from a used car salesman) that it just needed a little work. He had a convincing story as to it's condition and so we stupidly bought a n...
