Re: Handbrake adjustment

Shep , in response to your post . When I had my primary gearbox out and discovered that the handbrake was totally wrecked,as someone had attempted to fix The handbrake previously ,obviously with out a clue or manual or this forum, but I reassembled the plates and had to get a few extra ones from a d...

Re: Compression test on Fordson super engine

I think Aidrian is correct, a couple of months ago I had a question regarding a valve seal leak and oil coming out the exhaust and I was advised to give my pm hard work , so I did and the oil stopped coming out the exhaust, these tractors really do need hard work to bed in the new engines ,

Re: First tractor!

Black bob is correct I'd say,it will take a bit of ripping up the dash and even maybe raising the fuel tank abit so that you can see if the lever is slipping on the shaft,if it is not that then the fault is in the primary gearbox which will take a lot of work to remove.

Re: New member, and super major - cross shaft seals.

Yep there are no short cuts on this job, check out the posts on
This page just recently, we had a big discussion on this whole subject, the only thing I could add is that my fordson has the break drums beside my wheel hubs and I did not have to remove or dismantle them to carry out the task.

Oil out the exhaust

As some of ye may know through my various posts ,I've totally rebuilt to the best of my abilities my FMD. I've worked my major at hay making, silage , and more recently when my old Leyland 255 decided to call it a day, the fordson was called In for yard scraping , The stock are back in the fields an...

Re: Rear half shaft oil seal

Thankfully my half shaft seals are holding up and no leaks, you must be very frustrated at this stage as it's not an easy task to get them out every time, like Aidrian has said you might have to get the shaft looked at ?.If they are groves at the seal seating. Where I got my bearings pressed on to th...

Re: Rear half shaft oil seal

A quick update I've the two rear wheel bearings and seals back on my FMD. I tightend the half shaft nuts up and put in the split pin. As instructed by the guys here I oiled the wadding and greese the cork gasket and staked in the tin oil seal housing . I could only close the gap between the trumpet ...

Re: Rear half shaft oil seal

Well I brought my two half shafts in to a mate of mine who has a large press etc. As we examined the seal, tin work cork gasket,we failed to conclude as to what purpose the "wadding" actually serves??.would it not retain water in an area that you don't want water and damp to be kept or would it gath...

Re: Rear half shaft oil seal

Brian, I didn't know about staking the tin cover till we discussed it earlier in this post. I'll have to be sure to do it now !I don't see any dent: stake marks on the two tin covers I took out but I'll definitely do it now . Thanks again

There is no one answer to this question, there usually are no short cuts to this job,to do it correctly that is . There are plenty info here on this topic. The hand brake is a serious of pressure plates that press / squeezes a reverse idle gear in your primary gearbox.I describe a finding a working ...

Re: Rear half shaft oil seal

I have my two half shafts removed at the moment and the shafts sent away to get the tin work plus bearings replaced, I was wondering myself how to get this cork seal on real tight? I was planning on using some of that instant gasket from a tube? Would this be a good idea for your issue ?? Or a bad i...

Re: Oil and water don't mix

I went to see the major that needs repair today, the owner wasn't there but he gave me directions to his place . It was in a remote old farm yard and parked in a shed with no walls and a roof made of flattend old Steal (tar) barrels . So there it stood the major. But it wasn't a major .,. Well not a...

Re: Oil and water don't mix

Oehrick, I kinda thought the same as you regarding the shell bearings, I don't intend taking the whole engine out of the tractor . I will examine a few and if they seem good enough I'll "leave well enough alone "as we say here !. I like the idea of taking it off him for a nominal fee,lol although I'...

Oil and water don't mix

Hey guys , my local case dealership was asked if they would rebuild a Fordson major engine by a small holding owner. The dealership said it would just cost too much to put it through their shop at €50/ hr so they contacted myself and asked if I'd do it for the guy. So of course l said I would and am...

Re: Rear wheel bearing

Oehrick, I'm sure if you welded the bearing cup which was stuck on the shaft it would work a treat , it's kinda an alternative to gas, as a lot of us wouldn't have access to that, when I've this side refitted I'll have to do the other wheel bearing and seals as I'm sure it's in as poor a condition a...

Re: Rear wheel bearing

Well Brian, I don't think it would be possible to tap the back of the bearing cup while its in the trumpet as you would have no swinging power on the old hammer. And god knows I needed swiniging room lol.

Rear wheel bearing

How's everyone going on here, I've been using my rebuilt FMD, and after a few hard days it started to leak oil out the hub at the rear. So as usual I checked out this forum before commencing the job. I've the half shaft out and new seals and bearings ready to fit,but the cup/ seat of the bearing cou...

Re: Diagram for primary gearbox required

I'm not sure about where to buy one , but if you got all the bearings and the bearing cage it can be put together and with some greese placed back on the inner bearing race which is on the shaft and fit an elastic band around the cage and bearings to keep them assembled,

Have you taken the primary gearbox out yet? The advice I got here on this forum was critical to the success of my gearbox re build. especially the tip on cutting the tops of the old head bolts and screwing them in to the housing to use them as guides for reassembly, genius ,

I don't recall a seal on the hand brake leaver shaft,I don't think there is one as the oil would be that high up , but if you take the primary gearbox out you should seriously consider re doing the hand brake

Hey guys I'm following this story with interest. That sometimes this type of higher thermostat pressure may put excessive force on...
