Re: FTP lives on! New site ownership!

So very pleased that the site will continue. When I bought my Dexta in 2008 this site was the difference between ending up with a garden ornament or being able to do the repairs needed to make the tractor an invaluable piece of working equipment! Many thanks to the new site owners and good kuck for ...

Re: Heads Up. New Thermostart for Dextas

I installed a heat operated thermostart valve on my Dexta a few years ago and connected it to a cup reservoir fed from the injector leak off pipe. I found there was absolutely no flow from the leak off pipe so I just fill the reservoir every 4th start. The thermostart valve works so much better than...

Re: Fan

Is there a cowl around the fan? The cowl is very important to ensure that the air is sucked through the radiator and not around it. On my tractor the cowl was missing which caused the tractor to overheat - once I fitted a cowl I had no further overheating problems.

Re: Poor starting technique?

I've also changed the glow plug on my Dexta for one with the integrated fuel supply and heat actuated valve which allows the fuel to flow onto the element once it is hot. I added a little fuel reservoir to supply the glow plug. I also plumbed the reservoir into the injector spill pipe, however I get...

Check out vintagetractorengineer.com - they sell a DVD which takes you through the complete rebuild of a 23c engine.

Re: Tractor DVLA Registation

I wrote to New Holland in the UK (who have records of Fordson tractors) with Photos and the Engine and Chassis numbers. I received a letter within a week confirming the age of my Dexta on headed notepaper. This was all the evidence I needed for the DVLA to obtain an age related plate. This was in 20...

Re: Engine Oil

Thanks for your comments Brian. I put 20w50 in - however the oil pressure is 60psi when cold gradually reducing to 15psi at PTO rpm when properly hot (5 to7psi at idle) so I think an engine rebuild is on the cards in the near future even though engine pulls beautifully with no smoke. My main worry i...

Re: Engine Oil

I have just aquired a lovely barn stored MF35 with the 23C engine. Its been sitting for 10 years but started quite easily - without even bleeding and everything seems to work. I have been toying with what oil to put in the engine either 20/50 classic or 15/40 CF grade. It seems as though your thinki...

Re: leak off pipe

I have exactly the same situation - I plumbed a fuel resevoir for the glow plug to the leak off pipe but I get no diesel in the resevoir so I have to fill it maually.
I would expect that if the diesel was running into the sump you would notice the oil level going up - I have never noticed this.

Re: Injector leak off pipe

That's very interesting - maybe it's a feature of the Dexta injectors. I fill the resevoir with Diesel before starting during the winter. The heater is not needed in the summer.

Injector leak off pipe

I have installed a bimetallic heater plug and a resevoir to feed it. This system has noticeably improved the starting of my Dexta. I then connected the resevoir in line with the Injector Leak off pipe return to the fuel tank. However I have discovered that there is no fuel coming out of the leak off...

Re: s dexta ploughs

My David Brown plough is set at 10" and sits squarely behind the tractor but with the top link angled to the left (as you sit on the tractor) and I have no trouble getting a 10" furrow. The cross shaft on mine is perpendicular to the plough but I do know that earlier david Brown ploughs have the cro...

Re: s dexta ploughs

I use a David Brown plough which has a depth wheel - it could produce good results if it was behind someone who knew what they were doing. It is a simple plough which although it has all the adjustments required it does take more effort to make them than many match ploughs. It does sit strangely beh...

County Service Manual

I have a County Service Manual from Feb 1967 which a friend asked me to sell for him as he does not use the web. The manual came with the tractor when it was bought new by the farm where he works. Unfortunately the tractor has long gone! It comes in a blue County 3 ring binder. The pages are perfect...

Re: bloomin hydaulic settings

I also have the same problem as does my neighbours Dexta - I've never been able to achieve the settings and have simply set the turnbuckle long as I dare. On both tractors the draft position does not work. I've always assumed that the main reason was wear in the linkages and had not considered that ...

MF35 glow plug & resevoir system

A friend has a Dexta which has had the inlet preheat system modified to use the MF35 glowplug which, since the fuel pipe is connected directly to glowplug, has (I presume) a bimetal strip to let fuel through directly onto the element only when it is hot enough. The fuel feed comes from a remote auxi...

Re: Yet another head gasket failure

I haven't seen this tractor yet so I don't know what it was happening. Head gasket failure on my tractor only showed up by a few bubbles from the gasket area on the engine side - the cause was that the gasket had been replaced before but the head bolts were replaced upside down so there was not enou...

Re: oil from Exhaust

My friend had the same issue recently and got completely covered in black mess on the way home from a ploughing match. The advice I had seen on here is that it might be slobber from the exhaust which is indicative of the engine being underworked. So as his next door neighbour had a field that needed...

Yet another head gasket failure

I know of 3 Dexta's within a mile of where I live and so far all, including mine, have succumbed to head gasket failure! I am going to help put the head & gasket on the latest at the weekend. The chap had the valves done and replaced the head himself but it started leaking again very soon after. He ...
