Re: Baling

I remember seeing these self loading bale trailers at the Royal Show in the 1970s but never came across one on a UK farm. It looks a neat labour saving system, I have never seen one loading or unloading before, it beats a Lister elevator any day! How many bales would one of these carry?

Re: Dexta driving slow

I think that you will find that the early Dextas have a higher top speed than the later ones. According to Sparex the ratios changed in August 1960 at SN 957E63953. My Dexta is June 1960 so great for road runs but lacks the flexibility in lower gears.

Re: Ignition key - Original v Repro

No I didn't but I found the reason for my problem. The old ignition switch was worn, a piece of metal(tumbler?) in the key slot had dropped sideways stopping the switch from operating. I had the switch apart but could not get at it so in the end I used a small drill bit and drilled it out. It works ...

Ignition key - Original v Repro

I managed to buy a good combined ignition/light switch(used) on Ebay a couple of years ago. However there was no key, the key of my cheap plastic switch did work with a bit of fiddling until recently but now I can't get the key to work! Has anyone got both original and repro keys that they can...

Re: Linkage Balls

It just goes to show how inconsistent some of these products can be. Mine have been fine, the balls move freely and are easily interchangeable. THe balls are held in by clips, no problem to change (in my case). Brian's were obviously from a different batch.

Re: Linkage Balls

I replaced my lift arms with the Agriline interchangeable balls arm about 8 years ago for the same reason (wear). They have been very useful as I can hitch up to any Cat 1 or Cat 2 implement (within reason). My plough is a Ransomes TS59 with Cat 2 linkage and the Dexta handles her well. The arms wou...

Re: Volvo Rolling

I have to agree with Robert and Chris. You should NEVER try towing anything from a point above the line of the back axle drive shafts. There have been many drivers killed in the days of tractors without roll bars when trying to tow from the top link attachment. The tractor could quite easily flip ov...

You're right Brian :)

According to the Synopsis of Fordson Newsreeel No. 50 of 1960 at the British Film Institute, it was sent out to Jamaica for the "Freedom from Hunger" campaign.

I wonder if it is still laid up there in some forgotten corner waiting to be found :?:

Re: Best repair method for worn radius rods

I did find the "repair kit" on Ebay the other day, I shall have to dig around my tins of old change! I have heard about the fix of filing down the faces of the rod and cup but as you say you can only do that so many times. I also found that you can buy replacement radius rod ball ends for our red fr...

Best repair method for worn radius rods

I have not managed to find a long term solution to the worn radius rods on my Dexta. My normal short term repair is to use metal filler to pack out wear in the socket but this fix only lasts a few months. The movement in the radius rods also has the knock on of causing premature wear in the front ax...

As Kev speculated, my over-run clutch is built into the tractor end yoke of the implement PTO shaft. . http://www.malpasonline.co.uk/itm/Type-A4-Italian-Type-PTO-Shafts/PTO-Shaft-A4-880mm-138-x-6-QR-to-138-x-6-Overrunning-Clutch-right/13153#sthash.Gm5ih81I.dpbs It suit me just fine as this is the on...

Re: pto overrun clutch

I have one on my Teagle topper. It was an option when I bought the topper. This one is integral to the PTO shaft so you would hardly know it was there to look at it and it works a treat! It certainly makes tiopping a joy, It's not a nice feeling when you are heading towards a fence or gate and can't...

I would guess that the full round weights would be more stable. The only downside is having to take the wheel off to fit them.

Re: Front Wheel Weight Bolts

Hi Ben, Not at the moment I'm afraid, they are currently stuck under the bench somewhere. Mine are half shaped weights rather than the full circular weights which were made for the Dexta, I think mine were made for the smaller 000 series machines. They are fixed by two bolts each using the same fixi...

Re: Front Wheel Weight Bolts

I would suggest getting some decent high tensile bolts with Nyloc nuts. You don't want them coming loose on the road.

I have a set of weights for mine but have found that they make the steering vibrate more when on the road, so I take them off when not required.

Re: What wood should I use to rebuild a trailer buck?

Keruing is the standard timber for trailer beds. It has good rot and impact resistance. It is not cheap though. It cost me £170 to redeck my Bamford 3 ton trailer (10 feet by 6 feet) using unplained 30 mm boards and this was by far he best deal I could find.

Re: Oil spraying everywhere....

I have had this problem twice when I have changed oil filters in recent years. In my case I found that the problem was due to the rubber seals supplied with the filter being too narrow and being a sloppy fit in the seal groove. Even when the filter was torqued up correctly I found that once the engi...

Re: pneumatic governor diaphram

I have managed to crack it at last :D A bit like key hole surgery though. For those who have not changed a governor diaphragm before: There is only a very small gap between the diaphragm(when pulled out of its seat) and the injector pump housing to access the split pin. I found I had to remove the e...

Re: pneumatic governor diaphram

Just got back from a few days away with my good lady and had another look at the governor diaphragm. I only have about 3/8 inch gap through which to look for the diaphragm split pin. It has just struck me that perhaps it is supposed to pull out further than that. I do not know much about injector pu...

Oil feed to rockers

Has anyone had to replace the oilfeed pipe from the block to the cylinder head?

Mine is corroded and starting to leak. I have not seen them advertised through the normal Fordson parts suppliers, are the fittings the same as that used for automotive brake pipes?
