McConnel Digger
Recently finished restoring our old McConnel digger, it is a Mk1 with 12B armhead and the older style 4 levers. We think it was built in 1963. Today it was out and about in the sunshine digging some test holes for drainage. It probably won't see any serious work, but will be handy around the yard. I...

Re: Transmission Brake
Hi Mark
On my second photo, it shows the gears without the brake plates. There is a washer/shim that looks like it fits in the groove to stop the small gear sliding too far into the bigger gear. I think that is the part that is missing from your assembly.

Hi Mark Don't know if this will be helpful, but here are some photos of my SM handbrake with the old busted plates, and the new ones. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/2012-02-14_19-59-36_218.jpg http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/2012-02-14_18-13-48_274.jpg http://i1080...

Re: What size is my Dowty Coupling?
It will be 1/2 inch. There are two types of Dowty coupling listed by Sparex. "MF" and "Exacta" I fitted the male "MF" type to my Major, but there was a small leak when the McConnel digger was working, the inside of the female Dowty on the McConnel was stamped "Exacta" so I changed it to a "MF" type ...

Re: negative earth
Hi Chriss You are correct, needs to be negative earth for an alternator. A dynamo can be changed from positive to negative by "re-flashing" an alternator would need to have the rectifier diodes removed and swapped around to convert to positive earth, much easier to swap the battery leads and run as ...

Re: Rare parts wanted - UK
I have a set of front wheel weights, bought for my Super, but never fitted them, they are stamped ENFO so fairly sure they are the correct ones, see pictures to confirm. Just outside Glasgow, PM me if interested. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/20131027_1218591.jpg http://i1080.phot...

Re: Agriline Power Steering Kit
Here is a photo with the power steering kit installed. In addition to the kit, I added a double pulley to the crank to drive the pump with a separate belt. The brackets had to be modified for the double pulley. Also note the alternator, it may be slightly different with a generator. For me, this was...

Re: Hand Brake
I don't recall any force required to assemble, they went in easily. Here are some pics that may help, these were the old plates before removal: http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/2012-02-14_19-59-36_218.jpg http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/2012-02-18_13-32-37_591.jpg ht...

Re: Qualitrol set up
Thanks Brian
Good luck with your lift this weekend.
I am going to the Farming Yesteryear rally at Scone this weekend. Not taking the Major though, I will be taking my old lorry instead.

Re: Qualitrol set up
Hi Brian Sorry I confused thing a bit there. The set up was done with the yolk spring in place and adjusted, the spring was then removed to test the qualitrol easily without using a pry bar. In the picture with the draft plunger not resting on the back cover, the yolk spring is removed. Here is a ph...

Re: Qualitrol set up
Hi Brian I have re-assembled the unit and set it up. The first two pictures show "qualitrol" set up. http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/SS106038.jpg http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/SS106040.jpg These two show "position" set up http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/a...

Re: Qualitrol set up
Hi Brian It is an early Super, with single acting qualitrol. Here is a picture with lever at the top of the quadrant, in position control, and the top link pushed in (large spring removed so it stays in) The position rod adjuster and the spring are removed for clarity. As you can see, the turnbuckle...

Qualitrol set up
I had a problem with the hydraulics on my Super Major, the lift would only operate at the very top of the quadrant. The control valve was set up using Brian's procedure and now the arms go to the position set by the quadrant (position control) and raise and lower when pushing the top link in qualitr...

Re: Super major power steering
Hi All I understand the concern about the dynamo pulley angle, it is not as bad as it looks on the picture. The headlights are working at 14 Volts with the battery disconnected, so it is charging OK. I think the belt would slip with a 70 Ampere alternator, but seems ok with the dynamo. It would be g...

Re: Super major power steering
Hi All I recently fitted a power steering kit from Railswood Tractors. The fitment was fairly straightfoward, but required some modifications to the pump mounting bracket so that the pump would not foul the dynamo. The picture in the instructions with the kit showed a Super Major with an alternator ...

Hydraulic lift position
Hi Having a bit of trouble with the rear lift arms on my Super Major. The tractor was used only with the front loader so the rear arms were seized. The loader is now removed and a trailer tipping pipe connected to accessory port. Managed to get the arms freed, but they will only raise in the very hi...

Super Major Numberplate
Hi New member here. I am restoring my 61 Super Major and have some questions about the rear numberplate. Here should be a photo.... http://i1080.photobucket.com/albums/j324/atkigas/SS105990.jpg There is a long bracket a the back of the seat, is this where the numberplate should mount? Should it be a...
