Re: PTO Vibration

Well I bit the bullet today as this PTO vibration niggled me all last night and drained the rear axle of oil and removed the PTO lever and selector fork assembly to inspect it. The only thing that I could see was slight burring at the raised pad areas of the for where it would sit in the selector sh...

PTO Vibration

When I first got my tractor the PTO was tested for operation and found to be working. Due to the condition of the tractor is wasnt run for long only to check for operation. Whilst I had the hydraulic top off for refurbishment everything was checked inside the casing and nothing untoward was found. T...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Making more progress this week. Lefthand footplate fitted along with the clutch pedal and PTO selector. The only seal which had not been replaced was the PTO selector one and had a slight seep so lesson learned replace all seals when refitting parts. Also selector fork had a large chunk of it missin...

Re: PTO Shaft Removal

Martin, It is a straight forward and easy job.If you have axle stands to set up the backend of the tractor that should minimise oil loss. The manual recommends the back end oil to be replaced every 12 months and it holds 34 pints ( 19.5 litres ) for a standard tractor without any aux hydraulic equip...

Re: Minor Lift Pump oil leak.

Mervyn, Glad to hear you purchased a new lift pump. I far prefer using the Enamel paint as well. It gives a really good durable finish. You will need to post some pics of your painted rims. I just picked up my new rims from my wifes cousins workshop on Monday so have to get the centre discs rubbed d...

Re: Minor Lift Pump oil leak.

Mervyn, Im sure there is some kind of seal on the pump lever to stop oil leaking. I know we used to have problems on the old lift pumps of cars leaking through the weep hole and just used to replace them as there is no way of stripping them down apart from replacing the diaphrams on them. For all th...

Re: PTO Shaft Removal

Martin, Its a straight forward enough job. I would recommend you drain the back axle of oil unless you have a way to lift the back of the tractor sufficient height to stop the oil coming out the back when you remove the shaft. It would be a fine chance to replace your oil. Remove the four nuts holdi...

Re: My First Tractor

Bernie, Section 9 of the workshop manual covering the electrical system covers everything you should need to know about the electrics on the tractor and its a pretty basic system. It even covers the overhaul of the starter motor, dynamo and the regulator. If you happen to get stuck with something if...

Re: Brake & Wheel Specs

John, Good point there which I forgot to mention. Ive had many a dealings with the good old asbestos dust from brakes and clutches years ago. I remember when I was serving my time back in the early 80"s and when we were servicing a car my old boss said remember and give the brakes a good blow out wi...

Re: Brake & Wheel Specs

Bernie, Your drums sound as though they are in pretty good condition and if it was me I wouldn't go to the expense of getting them machined. Replacing the linings is a pretty straight forward and easy job and if you purchase linings you usually get the new rivets along with them.Remove the existing ...

Re: Brake & Wheel Specs

Bernie, In my opinion I wouldnt go to the expense of replacing the brake drums as 10 and 15 thou is nothing over the overall size of the drum and if they are not grooved or ridged then they should be fine after all its not as though you are going to be doing any high speeds with it. When I rebuilt m...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Mervyn, I will spray up something when I am doing the rest of my parts next time home and will let you know if my workmate can drop it off to your sister. He has been moved to another platform for the rest of his trip so hopefully will see him again before I go home to ask if he can do that. The rod...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Mervyn, Glad you managed to get the clevis pin sorted out. I had the same problem when I fitted the new hydraulic cylinder rod. I had to reshape the head of it to the same as the original to get it to fit and then the original clevis pin wouldnt fit through so had to drill out the hole as well. The ...

Mervyn, Thanks for the comments. Im unsure which pin it is that you are needing a photograph of. Can you maybe explain in more detail. Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Rear most drawbar bolt holes finished off. The broken studs were drilled out stepping up the drill bit until finished off with a 14mm drill bit. They were then tapped out using a 5/8 BSF TAP as I didnt want to go too big as was unsure how much meat there actually was in the casting. Have ended up wi...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

It was the big unveiling today. All covers and masking tape removed to see if the back end paint was a good match to the rest of the tractor. This was due to me running out of paint but Smith and Allen who supplied and matched the first batch of paint I purchased from them came good. I purchased a s...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Thanks very much Mervyn. Im well happy with progress now and hopefully maybe manage to get it completed and take in a few vintage rallies and road runs before the end of the year if all goes to plan.
