Re: Dexta Running Temp

Ive managed to purchase a 74 degree thermostat from Mayhill and fitted it. Have also put Anti-freeze/coolant in and had her running down the road so as I could flush out the gearbox since the gear oil I drained looked like cream. Put in a mix of 4 litres of paraffin/4 litres of oil. The engine was r...

Re: Fuel Tank Sealer

Update on the tank sealer. I purchased 4 litres of the POR15 degreaser/cleaner and cleaned the tank 4 times until the liquid ran clean. I followed the instructions to a T and mixed the cleaner 1 part of cleaner to 1 part hot water. It took a fair bit of cleaning using a handful of bolts. The POR15 e...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

A bit more progress made.Fuel tank cleaned and repaired using POR15 and fitted along with the bonnet and nose cone to ensure everything lines up before painting. I was quite surprised at how well everything fitted. Just a minor adjustment to make to the lower mounting holes on the nosecone. Hopefull...

Re: Dexta radiator rubber mounts

Pat, I wouldnt suspect that a full length of rubber will do any harm. My radiator was supplied from Quality Tractor Parts as my wifes cousin has an account with them and that is where 99% of my parts for my complete restoration has come from. It came with the M10 bolts already fitted to the radiator...

Re: Dexta radiator rubber mounts

Pat, Ive just replaced my radiator and managed to get radiator pads from Scotrac on ebay for 4.60 a pair. I had to get a couple of pairs as with only one pad on either side there was very little clearance between the radiator cowl and fan at the top. With two pads fitted between the radiator and axl...

Fuel Tank Sealer

Just a quick question to see if anyone has used fuel tank sealer before with success I.E. SLOSH or POR15. The reason im asking is that my fuel tank has been repaired in the past where someone has welded a patch on the bottom but it has a very small seepage of fuel from the repair. I was going to use...

Re: Temp sensor/gauge

Thats exactly where your sensor fits in. You have remaining parts of the old sensor still in the orifice. Thats what my one was like. I had removed the complete housing when rebuilding the engine so used my small gas blowtorch to heat up the housing and managed to remove the remainder of the sender ...

Re: Dexta Running Temp

Thanks for the information Brian and Old Charlie. I didnt realise that the new thermostats supplied are different from the original ones. I did squeeze the bottom hose as I was filling it to dispel any air. She didnt get too hot or boil or throw any water out the overflow. I was just worried that th...

Re: Dexta Running Temp

Ive done a wee bit of digging and found that the thermostat that I purchased was from Agriline Pt # 5174 which is an 83 C / 181 F thermostat which would make the gauge sit just at the start of the red. I also found Mayhill sell one at 89 C / 192 F. This seems a bit crazy since all the gauges I have ...

Dexta Running Temp

Just a quick question guys. I had the Dexta up and running yesterday just sitting in the garage now that I have the axle and front wheels on her again. Just wanted to hear her running before heading off to Angola for another 4 weeks for all my sins lol. I noticed that she was running quite hot I.E. ...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Thanks for the comments guys. Still got the back end to do once the front is finished but hoping to have her ready for the shows next year. Picked up my nose cone and bonnet today and what a cracking job Hendersons Metal Cleaning Services of Edinburgh did on them dipping them and then shotblasting. ...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

The main thing is to keep the good lady happy Mark so i comprimised and took her away for the weekend. The problem I have is the garage is joined to the house but found if i kept the extractor fans going full blast in the downstairs loo and the kitchen hood there were no fumes. Luckily I dont have t...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Paint spraying has started in ernest this time home. Never realised I had cleaned so many parts for painting. Looks like I will have to do it in shifts due to the limited space I have and now the good lady is complaining of smelling paint fumes in the house. Looks like I may have to hire an extracto...

Re: 1958 Dexta Restoration

Thanks Mark. She is coming together slowly but surely. It will soon be a year ive been at her but with working away my time is limited with working a 4/4 rotation. It was a great satisfaction hearing her run after totally rebuilding the engine. This site is fantastic with such a wealth of knowledge....

Just an update on my restoration. Engine fully rebuilt and painted in etching primer then zinc phosphate, which has been run on my drive to ensure there were no oil/coolant leaks before refitting to the tractor. https://s19.postimg.cc/umjwbh47j/DSC01694.jpg Gearbox all done and also primed. https://...

Re: 1958 Dexta Tacho

Brian, Many thanks for the information again. You certainly are a wealth on knowledge. Here was me thinking that the engine had been changed at some point which I was a bit disappointed to be honest but to find out that it could be a protoype and was cast in Nov 1957 makes it very interesting. After...
