The search box can indeed lead to many hours of "intellectual enhancement" and leave you blissfully unaware of time passing!

For general information purposes, a 55 gallon steel drum full of concrete weighs about 1200 lbs.

Re: Fordson Major Diesel - starting problems

I have found that a hot air gun directed down the intake stack while cranking helps a great deal as you are introducing very hot air to the combustion chambers this way.

Re: New member, hydraulic issue

A Burco might be hard to find but a crock pot should do the same job, only a smaller quantity at a time. Also, they can be had pretty inexpensively at yard sales and flea markets. I'd rather spend a little time instead of cash!

Re: New member, hydraulic issue

If you go to the "Peatland Export Parts-Home", Leyland Nuffield BMC Tractor message board and search "Baby Burco", you will find a viable solution to the removal of water and re-use of the oil. I believe a gentleman named Rick came up with the idea.

Re: New Member with Fordson Major Diesel

Being laid up while you have a project you want to get to is frustrating, to say the least! I've had my right shoulder opened up four times(they finally got it right), and a knee replacement (need the other now). Wasting time while doing nothing is miserable but please, please make sure you do the t...

Since you asked, I doubt the telephone call box sign was there 50 years ago and the rail grade crossing treatment seems to be pretty recent. Love the look of the honest working tractor! Nice picture.

Re: Front axle pin renewal and casting machining

Regarding case hardening mentioned by 1962 model, there is a product called Cherry Red sold by Midway gunsmithing supply that appears to be very easy to use. I haven't tried it yet but it looks promising.

Re: Oil Pressure

I f you read Brians' post "Engine oil" at the beginning of this forum (Announcements) you will see he recommends Morris of Shrewsbury 20-50W oil and the comments made are logical. If you can get hold of this stuff, it seems like a good bet for your particular application. DON'T put a rebuild off for...

It should start and run pretty well at 300 pounds. Just a thought--- have you checked to be sure the battery earth (ground) connection at the tractor end is good and clean?
It doesn't take a lot of corrosion to drastically reduce the power to the starter motor. :eyes:

Given the poundage holding those blocks down, I doubt that it's going anywhere! I'm guessing that they are oak or elm or some other dense hardwood. Please take photos from the same vantage point as it goes back together as a " work in progress" series. It is something that seems to be rarely done an...

Re: Water pump overhaul

Hi super6954! This is just a thought about the undersize crankshaft. I had a Case tractor with a very bad rod journal and the machine shop doing the work spray welded the journal and turned it back to standard. It's been running like a top for over ten years now. The welding techniques available the...

Re: A "Major" sleeve problem

Hi Dave! I hope the gathering in Kent went off well a couple weeks ago; I couldn't make it this year. If the crank was even a few degrees off of "6 and 12" I think the hammering on a block would have worked enough to get it to budge. I like the idea of firing the cylinders but have to wait for the r...
