Re: first start up

Oil pressure is spot on, so all is well with the rebuild. The oil coming out of the exhaust ports will be unburnt diesel oil. You didn't mention the injection pump. Did you have it overhauled? If not, suggest that you do. Once done, do this to get the rings to bite. https://i.postimg.cc/8czdcQzH/IMG...

Well now you can believe it.
And we're all wondering what those things are that you confess to doing but should not have done.
Don't hold back!

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

As with all situations such as these, measure inside & outside diameter, then contact seal supplier. Machinery of this era was built around available bearings & seals, not the other way round. I didn't even think to look for a New Holland seal. If I remember rightly, I found a double-lipped seal fro...

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

With respect, you are asking if an engine is healthy. First thing to look for is oil pressure. Should be 44psi on start-up, 41psi an hour into ploughing. Second thing is to see clear exhaust shortly after start-up. That's how they looked a few weeks into service. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJPv...

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

My NP Super left Dagenham in September 1963. Nearly fifty years later I bought it to go ploughing. First thing I did after acquiring it was to rebuild the engine. Didn't give it a moment's thought. Wearing parts of a machine this old will be worn. Also replaced wearing/failed parts elsewhere on trac...

You ask if something is stuck.
The answer is yes.
Please give us some history on the tractor. Have you just acquired it? My guess is yes.

Re: Meshed gear noise when being pushed in neutral.

At the end of the video you can hear the hydraulic pump making numerous corrections. Some corrections are normal, but these were too frequent. I had a problem with a leaking unloading valve plug. Problem became more pronounced as oil became thinner through work. Oil in question was & is Morris AG 90...

Re: Meshed gear noise when being pushed in neutral.

Listen to this. Filter out the exhaust note and you'll hear the transmission whine.
Much more noticeable when you're sitting on the seat.
This is basic engineering that was built to last.

Re: Front axle bolts/sump pin removal

Forgot to comment on the sump A frame pin. It will be stepped through wear - not much, but enough to prevent simple extraction. Didn't have the tools to cut it out, so I left my A frame attached to the sump. If you take this option, handle carefully due to the leverage of the A frame on the sump. Fe...

Re: Front axle bolts/sump pin removal

The axle bolts will be hellishly tight in their bores. Heat is difficult to appy due to the thickness of the axle beams. Unscew the nut a turn and a half and clout with a sledgehammer. You will get them out, but some of the nuts may not survive the procedure. Best, Adrian. https://i.postimg.cc/brjPS...

Re: engine overhaul

Mathias, when you say that you have done the injectors yourself, with respect, you haven't. You have no way of determining the spray pattern or pressure upon opening. Injection pump and injectors need to be calibrated together by a specialist. When I read here and elsewhere of people fiddling around...

Re: engine overhaul

Glass bowl filter a good addition to the fuel line. Mine wasn't fitted with one, and it doesn't feel right not to have it. Any workshop capable of skimming the head will grind the valve seats, press in the new guides and fit the new valves and springs. There's a kit for rebuilding the water pump. I ...

Re: engine overhaul

Great job, Mathias. This all looks just as it should be. Re the head, recommend that you have it skimmed. At the same time ask the workshop to press in new valve guides and to regrind the valve seats to fit new valves. Also, look for a thermostat that opens at around 200F. It's all about achieving c...

Re: Wheel strakes

My father was in the REME. As a boy, I remember driving with him in one of the first Range Rovers. We had returned to the road, and the central diff lock light wouldn't go out. He put one set of wheels on the verge and took to the fields where possible until we got home. Mann Egerton then came and c...

Re: Wheel strakes

Strakes were designed to be used on Diesel and Power Majors.
Not wise to fit them to a Super. They are incompatible with a diff lock.
