Re: An engine without thermostat gets worn rapidly.
Many years ago when I was a member of the Triumph Car Club of West Australia we conducted a workshop with a top class coolant specialist. Part of the research was to find the difference in temps with and without thermostats plus one other state -- re-useing a dodgy one. and paying particular attenti...

Re: New user, new project
Sorry Billy; that was not what I was referring too but rather your words --' Don't run like that for longer than you need to bleed the injectors as it overloads the next cylinder (no. 4)' It is not a cylinder or piston that one should worry about but rather the now [as you have cited] unequal pressu...

Re: New user, new project
Interesting comment from Billy about injector failure -- plus, of course, also the responses from Shepp and Hywell.
But, I wonder, have all three missed the salient point -- the firing order -- calculated to place the least stress on the axis of rotation of the crankshaft.

Re: ploughing 2022
Ah; the joys of mouldboard ploughing! I spent many enjoyable hours doing that in the early 70s. But here in Oz it's disc ploughing -- not the same thing; and even now, after nearly 50 years, I miss it. Just a thought: After autumn ploughing we always coated boards and discs with a mixture of grease ...

Re: Ready for first start since overhaul.
Thank you for your comments, Sandy; I was not ignoring or questioning the wisdom of staggering ring gaps -- in fact I wrote '... space my rings around the piston and opposed to each other as much as possible.' The reason I phrased it as I did is because diesel engines, with their much higher compres...

Re: Ready for first start since overhaul.
I believe, because this is a discussion about a Fordson Super Major engine, it would be worthwhile listing some of the instructions that the official Ford manual has to say in its supplement about assembling the FSM engine -- particularly piston ring gaps and tensioning cylinder head bolts. Piston r...

Re: Ready for first start since overhaul.
Good day Jparks1; and others who are absorbed in this interesting discussion. I would like to add my two bobs worth to clarify certain suggestions that have been made. Firstly; always have water in the cooling system when running the engine as without it you will undoubtedly induce 'heat scatter' wh...

Agreed, Emiel. However, I believe that Leeroy lives in the U.S of A where there are probably very few second hand Lucas internally regulated twin wire alternators around. Here in Oz I fitted a 25amp Lucas some 12 years ago -- no problems since. There is the option of twin wire Bosch ones as well. Wh...

I suggest, Leeroy, you google and watch the video to be found under the heading
'How to wire a 1 wire alternator [10SI Delco style] to a farm tractor'
And if that's GMs idea of '1 wire' I need to consult my school's 1 times tables again!
Enjoy your self.

Re: Mounting alternator on Major
Are we to assume that this is a Power/Super Major -- the one that you previously asked for help with gear box problems? If so then it must, at some time, had a Ford fitted keyed/mechanical switch along with a red light and/or an ammeter -- this to excite your dynamo which had 2 wires; 1 in from the ...

StuP Start the engine and idle it. Connect volt meter across battery terminals and note reading -- good if above 12 and a bit. Max rev engine -- good if 13 plus. Bad if 14 plus. Turn on high beam lights with max revs. Good if approaching 13 -- bad if much over 13. If it is regularly overcharging the...

Re: Steering problems
Do you have power steering on your Major? Before ripping things apart how about checking the steering box oil level. There is a grease nipple at the top of the column which lubricates the top steering bush -- as well as the felt grease retainer. You have to remove the st. wheel to get at/remove the ...

Re: forson super major - OIL COMING OUT AT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
Did you remember, when installing the cylinder head, to ensure that the rubber 'O' ring circling the oil hole in the block that
feeds the rocker gear was fitted? As well it is very easy to distort this rubber ring unless using the manual's prompting to use locating studs.

Re: Correct coolant level
All tractor radiators have a header tank otherwise the coolant would not be able to circulate. The top hose is connected to the header tank. Ricky; the 'good book' [up to and including the Super Major] informs us that, as standard, an un-pressurised rad cap is fitted -- unless the Major is used in a...

Re: Correct coolant level
I'm not sure that I understand your question[s]. You remove the radiator PRESSURE cap and pour coolant in until it will take no more. After replacing the rad. cap start the engine and allow it to reach its operating temp. All things being equal [i.e. no leaks] this will cause expansion of the coolan...

Yep; you have to press the brake pedals first in order to apply them as a parking brake then use the 'T' piece handle to keep them locked on. You may/will find the following web site of use.It is in Swedish so you may have to use the translation menu. www.fordsontractorpages.nl/ubb/Forum4/HTML/00108...

Welcome to the very helpful and insightful Fordson pages, etfig. What part of the world are you at? Pic 1 looks like a coolant drain tap for the block. [Other experts will clarify]. Pic 2 is the engagement lever for a belt drive -- if you have one. Pic 3 is the lever that, by twisting it, locks the ...

Re: forson super major - OIL COMING OUT AT EXHAUST MANIFOLD
Kissamo, before you replaced pots and pistons was oil dripping out of the lower part of the exhaust pipe? If so then you really need to re-furbish the cylinder head -- i.e. re-face valves and seats; plus new stem seals. If no oil dripped out then either the c/head gasket is leaking or the tapered pi...

Re: frothy water
In the old days, Rick, the general practice was to re-torque engines after they were warmed up -- and as SvendH has stated, our good book recommends this. As far as I recall the reason was that head bolts/studs expanded slightly with heat and therefor fractionally loosen. But by far the worst problem...

Yes, Mathias; the head does look terrific -- but wasn't point 2 of a mm [8 thou of an inch] a bit excessive; unless it needed it, of course? We always reckoned that 5 thou or under was enough to true up a deck. I mention it because this amount removed will have an effect on the ultimate injector tim...

Cam followers could be re-surfaced but: they are not meant to be flat; rather slightly concave to accommodate the lead in and out of the cam lobe.

Many, many times SvendH, since the late 1950s from a Ford 8 to a number of Alfa Romeos that I've owned.
