Re: Power Major and external hydraulics.

Hello Richard. I have a Power Major with a log splitter permanantly attached to the front end. The oil feed to the splitter is plumbed from the plug under the RH side of the seat the same as yours and returns through a fitting in place of the back end filler cap. I lift the tractor hydraulic lever u...

Re: Diesel

I have a filter funnel made by "Mr Funnel" in the USA but they must be available in the UK as mine is marked £54 ex VAT !!! and yes it will filter out water from diesel and no I didn`t buy it I inherited it from a friend. I would be inclined to siphon off the top 170 litres of a 200 L barrel and fil...

Re: Tachometer cable too short for for my boat! help please

If you don`t get any luck with the usual retailers it might be worth visiting someone who restores or maintains British motor bikes as long as your sure about the size of the end fittings. They usually make up their own cables and the thread sizes won`t frighten them off.

Re: Topping with the 1960 Power Major

Nice to hear from you again Dave. Congratulations on finding a wife and a farm. I`m envious of the stone crusher, always wanted one but never found one. A few years ago I watched a steam engine driving one being fed flints and it was really impressive the way it worked on a slow speed and produced n...

Re: Oil Light

My PM oil light comes on occasionaly. This is caused by oil and sawdust building up on the block and pressure switch and making a contact with the lead. A quick wipe with some paper over the switch and lead cures it. Hope yours is as simple Dave

Re: Leaking fuel tank

I have an International 475 that had a leaky fuel tank. My son cut out the rusty parts and patched over the holes by mig welding thin steel sheet over the holes, it didn`t look too pretty but its a working tractor and didn`t matter. Then he treated the inside of the tank with Por 15, followed the in...

Re: Use of Red Diesel After 1 April 2022

The reason I bought a Major was for working in the woods, sawbench on the back, log splitter on the front, no cab or glass to get in the way and it will always start and it will do a full days work on around 20 or so litres of diesel.Likewise the International, perkins engine cheap to run, loader on ...

Re: Use of Red Diesel After 1 April 2022

I have 2 tractors, a 1959 Power Major and a 1975 International 475. Over the last few years DVLA has changed the taxation class of both tractors from Agricultural machine to Historic vehicle on the basis of age. There has to be an ulteria motive here.Dave

Re: Steering Box Seal 1959 power major

Will, I did my 1960 PM steering box and mine had what was described as the older type seal which had to be staked in. I too received the wrong seal and as covid was causing problems at the time with some companies closed, I re used the old seal and re staked it with the battered old stake, filled th...

Hi Mervyn, been reading your posts with interest for ages, a friend of mine has been re wiring a Messersmitt buble car over some time, he works and can only do a bit now and again. To minimise mistakes he laid the old loom on a sheet of plywood on the floor and drew a life sized diagram with wire co...

Re: Power Major Steering Box Rebuild - Help With Roller Bearings

Thats how I eventually did mine plus plenty of old partly dry grease to stop the ball bearings falling off.It takes patience and steady hands and I don`t appear to have either. I also filled the box with Land Rover semi liquid grease after the new oil leaked out in no time. Dave

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap - microbes or just dirty diesel?

Thats the end of the return pipe it comes up the inside of the tank, or at least it does on my PM. Top tip if the tank is lined with a sealant and this pipe gets blocked with sealant, thread a length of mig wire up through with a cordless drill, it removes the sealant and doesn`t damage the pipe. Do...

Re: Fordson Dexta Fuel tap Fueltap

Pat I think you`ll need to take the tank off to clean it properly. I spent a lot of time cleaning a tank on my IH in situ and every time I thought I`d got it clean it would starve itself of fuel a day or week later with the tap filter, lift pump filter or main filters clogged. Take the tank off, tip...

You could drain the engine oil and measure the correct amount back in and see if it lines up with the dipstick, then you can rest easy and know its ok  Dave

Re: What on earth is on my suction screen?!

Can`t see the pictures, but don`t be too worried about the oil being emulsified in the back axle its a common occurance in majors and is caused by condensation. As long as you don`t find too much evidence of metal shards or silver coloured sludge in the bottom when you clean it out just refill with ...

Re: Running a log splitter

As previously said, most tractors pump oil at a similar rate, its the splitter makes the difference because of the size and length of stroke of the ram. My advice would be try and see one or two working before you decide. Something I wish I`d seen before I bought was an auto return where the splitte...

Re: Low engine revs

I bought a new pre cleaner for my PM air cleaner from a supplier I`ve used for a few years. After fitting the engine lost 500 rpm and it looked like the fins on the underside were angled far too shallow, plus they were thickly caked in paint. Long story short they sent 3 replacements all with the sa...

Re: Steering box

Mathias and Tim, I can elaborate on the last post. My "couple of thick gaskets" were 1 x original shim, 3 x .8mm gaskets, 1 x Weetabix gasket and a biscuit tin shim all smeared with grease. With the bolts at hand tight the box is locked up. I`ve checked the forks are in as far as they can go and the...

An update on the steering box. I finally got most the parts needed and got it assembled. The top bearing feels good with the 4 or 5 shims I had, but I only had 1 shim for the side cover and its nowhere near enough even between thick gaskets. Has anyone found a supplier for these shims? I`ve tried 2 ...

Re: Steering box

My mechanic son felt the grease would solidify onto the casing and go hard but I feel he underestimates the the amount of heat generated by the transmission to keep it soft plus there is a fair amount of mechanical movement in that box - its very tempting. I`ve always felt farmers would neglect chec...
