Re: Cross lift shaft removal
Hi major m I could not get my cross shaft out no matter how much heat or pressing I applied. I cut mine into three, using a powered, hand held reciprocating saw, through the removed oil filler housing. The centre (the rusted bits ) dropped out and the shaft ends were then easy to remove. Once the ce...

Re: can anyone guess what has been mounted on this major
Hi, The coin has been used to increase the pressure in the hydraulic system. It does this by giving the pressure relief valve spring additional compression. The spring is under the circular disc with the tapped centre hole. Maybe this indicates that what was on the back of the tractor needed more pr...

Re: Rear Lift Arms
Hi Icom102, Further to my last post. After the lift arm had been powered up to its upper limit, it was not possible to move it any further by hand. At any position other than fully raised it is of course possible to move it further up because the "dog bone" only rests against the piston and is not m...

Re: Rear Lift Arms
Hi, Icom 102
Just measured from ground to centre of lift arm pin when raised by power. It measured 4' 03/8".
I have 36" wheels fitted. Tractor is a '55 FNM.
Also, my manual says arms should move 39 degrees above and below the horizontal.
Hope this helps.

Thanks Bob and Henk for your comments, Today, I have fitted the lock nut to my valve and am sure now that one was needed. Henk, assuming we are looking at the same parts list, you are correct in saying that the exploded view of the injector pump (page 166) does not show the locknut but it is listed ...

Bob, Agree with your comments about P. Slater, I also found him very helpful. I bought a diaphragm and damping valve off him. My question is this, did you fit the nut ( Fordson Part No 33798) between the link and the small plate when you replaced your old valve with the new one. The parts list seems...

Sealing Cylinder Liner
Hello, Thank you, Brian, Kim, Dandy Dave, Liam for your kind comments. Liam, you asked me to keep you updated on progress, but before I do, look at the state of the bores on the engine I purchased. I did not know they were like this until I took the head off but you can see now why I knew straight a...

Sealing Cylinder Liner
Hi everyone, Thank you for your replies and comments. So, non-setting sealent it is. Hylomar is readily available in the U.K. but Permatex might only be available in N. America according to their website. Liam, I used Belzona 1111 in the 400 grm. pack. I bought it direct from the Harrogate head offi...

Sealing Cylinder Liner
Hi, I have just finished repairing the grooves that hold the cylinder liner sealing rings in place using Belzona and the technique described by Brian in previous posts. I am pleased with the result and I am now about to install new liners. My engine is a late '54 FMD with a single O ring. My instinc...

Hi Kim, I have drawn a rough sketch of the leg of the withdrawal tool as you requested, giving the various approximate dimensions . I didn't work to dimensions myself, just kept filing and sawing until the thing worked. The photo also shows one of the actual legs. http://img527.imageshack.us/img527/...

Sorry my post is late to help Ian but it my help others in future. In the last few days I have successfully removed both bearing outer races with the tool shown. The tool started as a ordinary three leg puller but I removed the legs and substituted three legs that I made that were roughly diamond sh...

play in lift arm cross shaft
Hello, Henk and Emiel, Thank you for your very prompt replies to my post. You both confirm what I thought, that no new parts are available. That being the case I will try a different method to eliminate the play to that which you describe. I propose to fabricate new bearings, each made up from four ...

Play in lift arm cross shaft
Hello, I am renovating my 1953 Fordson Major Diesel and have found excessive play in the lift arm cross shaft. The inner bearings were found to be particularly badly worn and deeply pitted. I had planned to turn off the affected surface and sleeve the bearing but this would still leave an unsatisfac...
