Re: Super Major Paint
It likely depended on if the parts were on the tractor when it entered the paint booth. Keep in mind these tractors were mass produced with workers usually focused on production instead of detail. The Majors were completely blue with orange wheels, the Power Majors had the grill painted silver, but ...

Re: Starter motor won't stop turning
Ground should be disconnected first. I don't think it matters if it's negative or positive ground. I agree it's likely the solenoid, as turning the key off should have deenergized the solenoid if it was something like a sticky starter switch. If the solenoid opens after tapping it with a hammer (be ...

Re: Filters for the major
I have some numbers from NAPA's filter lookup.
Napa 1188 (115mm) and 1193 (135mm) are the engine oil filters.
Baldwin equivalents are PT108-HD and PT29 respectively.
Napa 3194 is the fuel filter. Baldwin equivalent is PF816.

Re: Battery for Fordson Major
Short answer is yes, but get a larger-sized battery. While the Fordson has a 12 volt system, it originally used two Group-1 six-volt batteries in series to get a large enough cranking capacity from batteries of the time. Me and my dad like using Group-31 batteries on our farm equipment. Our Case bac...

Re: 3 Breather Pipes?
If the vacuum lines have not been touched, I can perhaps assume that someone in the past rerouted the rocker cover vent over to the intake manifold for some reason. It can probably be plugged off.

Re: 3 Breather Pipes?
The two lines on the manifold would have gone over to the injection pump. Im not certain on the Super Majors, but on the Power Majors, the injection pump used air pressure to control the governer. We need to see what kind of pump you have to know for sure. The pipe on the rocker cover would have wen...

I can guess where the rod on that eyelet goes into the casting might be a good spot for rust to form and stick up. Try flushing that area with WD-40.

Re: Gearbox clatter at idle
I'm wondering if you have something loose in the clutch area. Take a prybar to the timing port window and see if the flywheel has any lateral movement.

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.
Can you get it to repeat shifting back and forth? If some rust was holding the gears back, it might make sense to jack the rear wheels up, overfill the transmission with varsol or diesel, then spin the wheels and shift through all the gears multiple times to wash the transmission. That should loosen...

Re: New 1955 Fordson New Major Diesel Mark 1 owner
Excluding attachments like loaders or backhoes, there were originally only two filters on the entire machine: engine oil and fuel. Napa 1193 is the engine oil filter. Napa 3194 is the fuel filter. The air filter is an oil bath and does not need a filter, as the oil is the filter medium. To clean the...

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.
I see the transmission oil has a lot of water in it-. You might be dealing with some rust somewhere. It might be worth draining that out and seeing what the low range clutch is doing.

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.
Are you able to upload some photos? That bevel gear is part of the flat-belt pulley attachment. There is a dog clutch in front of that gear (towards the engine clutch) that engages for high range. The dogs will move away from the bevel gear to engage high range. What is the travel like on the shifte...

Here's a link to the capacities: http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?t=827 The filler cap for the transmission is on the side next to the clutch pedal, while the filler for the rear axle is behind the seat. There is a dipstick in front of the main gearshift that indicates the leve...

Re: Advice for replacing a water pump on a Fordson Super Maj
I got the pump off. It's partially seized up. I can turn it, but barely. The impellers on the pump actually seem to rub against the housing of the pump. Now for the issue -- It seems that water pumps for Super Majors with power steering are not readily available. This thread seems to indicate that ...

Re: New 1955 Fordson New Major Diesel Mark 1 owner
The air filter will be an oil bath type, located next to the battery in front of the fuel tank. Whatever you use in the engine is sufficient for the air filter. Some water contamination in the transmission is normal for old tractors due to their large, cavernous housings. Be aware that the transmiss...

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.
The next step I would do is take the range shifter housing off and check the linkage and shifter forks. This involves removing the fuel tank and steering column, but you should be able to get a good look inside the transmission at everything the range lever connects to. here's the Clutch and Transmi...

Re: New 1955 Fordson New Major Diesel Mark 1 owner
New fluids and filters all around is a pretty good start. If the old fluids look okay it probably wouldn't hurt to top them up and coax the tractor alive first to see what the overall shape is. The old diesel, if it doesn't look too scummy, can probably be filtered and diluted with fresh stuff. Dies...

The lever is held on to the shifting shaft by a wedge pin and a bolt beside the steering column. Take off the sheet metal cover surrounding the lever and see if that pin is tight.

Re: Advice for replacing a water pump on a Fordson Super Maj
I wonder if the bolts holding the pulley and fan on have fallen out. Those bolts also drive the water pump.
If they have fallen out you might be looking at some radiator damage from the loose parts.

Re: Advice for replacing a water pump on a Fordson Super Maj
For the fan not turning, Check if you have a fan belt and that it's stretched across the fan pulley. With the front nose off, a close inspection of the pump might give you an idea where the liquid is coming from. The water pump should have a "weep hole" in the housing, and if coolant is coming from ...

Re: mid mounted mower - almost there
Sickle mowers work best in really tall, stalky grass, Otherwise it tends to sit on the mower like in your video. Other thoughts might be to try a faster ground speed, and check your sickle sections to make sure they are both sharp and laying flat against the ledger plates. On our mowers we find dull...

It might be possible your lever is slipping on the shifter shaft. Is there any gear grinding when you try to move it up?
Try taking the sheet metal cover off to give the lever some extra swing.

Not sure if this will help, but what kind of service manual are you using?
The Swedish Fordson site has a scan of the factory service manual: http://www.fordson.se/phpBB2/viewtopic. ... 057fc93d5d
It might help you out with the timing marks

Re: Fordson Super Major Serial Number
Werries, I realized I goofed up in my description of the location of the serial number.
The serial number is on a machined flat surface, at the front of the engine, on the right hand side, above the injection pump.
Sorry about that.
