Diesel Fuel Filter Upgrade

Has anyone successfully replaced the old diesel fuel filter on Dexta with a spin-on filter or inline filter? Mine has proven difficult to seal and the seal that comes with the filter element does not fit.

1960 diesel fuel filter washers

I'm replacing the diesel fuel filter and didn't notice the location of washers when the filter came out. There is a flat metal washer 1.25" in diameter with a hole large enough to go over the center post in the filter housing and a smaller fiber washer with the same diameter center hole. Do these go...

Re: Super Major rear wheel adjustment

Tractor has solid (non-adjustable unlike those in diaggram) steel wheels (orange so I think they're stock wheels) and 16x36 tires.

Super Major rear wheel adjustment

The outside measurement of the rear tires on my Super Major is 79". The distance between rails on my trailer is 78". Are the rear wheels able to be adjusted in width? Reversing the wheels does not seem to be an option and they do not slide on an axle like my Farmall. Thanks for the help.

Re: FSMD engine heater

Overnight temp was 21 degrees F and the FSMD started without any electric heaters or ether. Just pushed in the cold start button on the pump. Cranked for about 30 seconds, then started. I'm continually impressed with this engine.

I've had not problems ordering from UK. DHL delivers within 5 days, but is costly ($50/shipment).

Re: FSMD engine heater

I don't have a shed, but I have considered using a blanket. I could add a heat lamp if needed. I'll make sure to get some winter diesel additive in it. I have a dipstick heater that I use in the transmission of my Farmall during cold snaps. I use 50/50 coolant, so freezing there shouldn't be an issue.

FSMD engine heater

I'd like to use the FSMD to move snow this winter. Here in Iowa temps can get to -10 degrees F. I have installed a freeze plug heater in the Dexta, but don't see any accessible freeze plugs on the SM. The temp sender on the upper block is a non-standard pipe thread, so I haven't had any luck install...

FSMD change + gound to - ground

1962 FSMD with original generator & voltage regulator. All of my other tractors are negative ground. Can I just change this from + ground to - ground without changing anything else in the generator/regulator system? Thanks.

Is there an easier way to remove the circlip from the shaft, than to lever it off with a screwdriver? Thanks

Can the seals be extracted from the PTO gearbox & replaced without dismantling the gears, bearings & shafts? Thanks.

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

In the diagram that I have, the PTO seals look like they are nested, one inside the other & the parts manual lists the number (E1ADKN-7297-B) as a pair. Is this correct, or do I need to order 2 seals & place them back-to-back?

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

Thanks for all the help. This discussion helped me understand the seal differences & diagnosis. Since the rear end oil is so low that I can see the lower main shaft through the transmission filler, I'm assuming the pto seal is the culprit, and that I can change that without splitting the tractor. Fr...

FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

I understand that a special tool is required to successfully install the double lipped seal between the gear box & rear end to stop the rapid draining of lubricant from gear box to rear end. In the USA, is this tool usually available at Ford (New Holland) dealers? Thanks.

I made spacers according to the diagram (0.575" & 0.597") and have compressed the release levers of the transmission & PTO pressure plates but still cannot obtain the clearance required to insert the spacers. The PTO levers are completely down to the clutch cover and the clearance is not nearly 0.59...

Re: FSM dual clutch

After cleaning up the clutch surfaces, I see some fine cracks (like fish scales) in the transmission clutch pressure plate surface. Do these need to be machined out? If so, is this something a general automotive machine shop can do?
