Re: stuck in gear

I bought a 62 super major from a friend that used it on a hunting lease. He said it was a ford 5000, which it does have a sticker on the hood that says ford 5000, but it is not a new performance tractor. I paid 500$ for it I have worked on the hydraulics, put a new rear turf tread tire ( 18.4-26 ) o...

Re: stuck in gear

That is a very good looking tractor.
Also very good information as I am in the state of Georgia and it is a bit difficult to find parts locally, in the U.S.

Here is a picture I was able to find on ebay of the part and bolt I was trying to explain, but am sure I am screwing the correct terminology up pretty bad.

Re: Super major transmissions leak

After using the tractor for several hours, I am losing about 2 gallons of 15-40 oil out of the transmission, even though the leak seems to be coming from the brake pedals. The rear end level, which is checked by the dipstick, hasn't changed at all. The cap that I have to use a wrench to remove by my...

How screwed am I ?

I have a 62 super major. The shifter selector goes into a socket looking cup that attaches to a shifting rod. I assume the rod connect to the forks in the transmission. I lost all ability to shift the tractor, and it was stuck in 1st low. I pulled the shifter and found that the bolt that holds the s...

Re: 62 super major tach drive problem

Mine ended up going together without any modifications. The square cable end goes quite a bit further down into the tach drive than I expected. What looks like a rounded out hole, is, but the square part of the cable doesn't start to fit into the tach drive, until about a full inch past the point yo...

Re: 62 super major leveling box and link help

Thank you for taking the time to verify the measurements. No more guessing about a 4000 working adapting onto my tractor ! I may have found a suitable replacement screw box. Part # 897649m95 leveling box. They cost about 80$ on ebay, and made for a MF 265. Massey Ferguson 265 is a cat 2 set up, like...

Re: forson super major hydraulic pump

I just went through my entire hydraulic system on a 62 power major. Does it lift correctly when the oil is cool ? You say it lift poorly when the oil is hot. That sounds like the oil is thinning down under heat, which is normal, and leaking past a oring or seal. When was the last time the oil was ch...

Re: 62 super major leveling box and link help

The one on the left on my tractor is frozen. I have tried everything, including a torch ! Someone apparently used a powerline turnbuckle and welded a repair heim joint on the end, for the right side. It works, but stinks for trying to adjust ! According to the measurement I am able to find online, s...

Re: super major steering box

I can remove rotational play from the steering box by removing shims between the cover and the steering box ?
Shims meaning what looks like gaskets between the box and the cover ?
Thanks for posting this question.
I was about to tackle the same job !

62 super major leveling box and link help

I have a 62 super major that I want to get a leveling box for. I found out however that the left side of the tractor, leveling arm is froze solid, so even with heat from a torch, it isn't budging ! At this point, I can live with the left side, but would like to find a leveling box to use a box blade...

Re: 62 fordson power major

Thank you all for your help, and with the identification. The tractor seems to be working well. I did a little grading with a box blade today, and the hydraulics seem to be holding up very well. One last thing. I would like to check for proper hydraulic pressure. I noted in one of the pics above, wh...

Re: 62 fordson power major

The code for the engine is a 1962. The hood and all seem to match the new performance version. The hydraulic top cover seems to not match the rest of the tractor, but rather a power major, I think. The top link vs the top link cam ( don't know what its actually called ) looks looks a little suspicio...

Re: 62 fordson power major

https://oi1079.photobucket.com/albums/w515/feagbc05/edited-image_zpsdgnprjdf.png one thing that did catch my eye is that the relief valve tip has a groove in it, which I am not sure is supposed to be there. It almost seems like wear similar to a needle and seat in a carburetor. Is this normal or co...

Re: Super major transmissions leak

I found a picture online, after reading your comment, and did not realize the shaft passes from side to side through the rear end and not the transmission ! I just got done draining the rear end and putting a oring in the hydraulic pump. That would have been the time to do it ! How hard are the seal...

Super major transmissions leak

I have a leak in my transmission where the brake and clutch pedals go through the chest, for a lack of better explanation. Basically where the brake pedals attach on the right side, it is leaking, and where the clutch is in the left it is leaking. I assume there is a seal of some kind behind there, ...

Re: 62 fordson power major

I will take some pictures tomorrow, if I get a chance of the tractor, but being a big dummy, I never thought to take a picture of the blown oring in the pump ! It was a success ! The oring in the pump was apparently the problem. I was able to lift that same set of disc at idle no problem, and hooked...

Re: 62 fordson power major

I got it all put back together again and I am going to try to lift something with it tomorrow. I found one of the two orings in the hydraulic pump were blown. 1/3 of the oring was completely missing !!! I could see absolutely no visible signs of wear in the pump, which I was expecting to find. My pu...

Re: 62 fordson power major

I am getting ready to pull the lid and drain it down, and pull the feed pipe and pump.

Re: 62 fordson power major

Taking the pump apart and replacing the oring is ok, but shimming gear wheels and knowing how to correctly do it. Is beyond my expertise level.
This is my first time really digging into hydraulics.
Any advice or just buy a new pump ?

Re: 62 fordson power major

I attached the gauge to the auxiliary block. I have a plain block without any flow control or anything.
