At 1200 rpm heavy brush will bog my engine as well.
I will bump the rpm up a little, so it won't strain as much.

With the 2000 pound brush mower, it will drop about 4 inches in maybe 10 seconds.
Basically from a high cutting heighth, back to the ground, in 10 seconds or less.
The blades edges are about 3 inches high, inside the deck, so I carry it about 3-4 inches high, and then re cut it lower.
