Re: Drain Plug thread size

The 3/4 inch BSF stainless bolts I managed to find on ebay and have bought fit perfectly :D phew. Unfortunately the size is quite rare hard to find; all I could find were 1.5 inch stainless bolts without having to get someone to make some bespoke ones. I'm in two minds whether to cut down the length...

Re: Drain Plug thread size

Thanks, Having spend several hours :) examining the hole and the thread I think it's a 3/4 BSF (12 threads per inch). 7 turns for 15mm when measured with my vernier. I even used some blue-tack to take a impression of the thread in the hole. BSF is that a usual thread size on a Fordson major? I thoug...

Re: Drain Plug thread size

hi henk, I dont have the aluminium plate, sump is of the newer type without a plate, so I guess it's cast iron?? (maybe wrong about that). I hoping the previous owner for some reason replaced the plug with a brass stop because they had nothing else as opposed to the thread in the sump is damaged. I ...

Drain Plug thread size

Hi, I have just removed the drain plug from my Major to drain the engine oil. Looks like the plug has either been cross-threaded in the past or is of incorrect thread pitch as the thread is in a poor mashed state. The plug looks like its made of brass and has a square head with flange (it almost loo...

Re: Oil supplier

I found the breather bolt. Absolutely caked in gunk so no way it was breathing through that. After a good clean and can now blow air through it :). So progress made one job done only 999 jobs to do :) Wonder how often that needs to be checked?

Re: Oil supplier

Something you could check before tearing her down is wether the gearbox is able to "breathe". One of the bolts that fix the steering-box to the top of the gearbox should be altered so as allow preasure in the gearbox to escape throu it,these bolts are often misplaced or blocked with rust and crap. ...

Re: Oil supplier

Hi Svend, Thanks you for the information. I had wondered where the dipstick for the rear was, now it all makes sense and also it suggests that oil most be leaking between gearbox and rear end. The oil level on the dipstick is above max whilst the oil in the gearbox when I look through the filler is ...

Oil supplier

Hi I'm newby and just bought myself a Major (1958) and I think I need to change the oil. The oil in the gearbox is a distinctly milky colour (at least that on the dip stick). I see the recommendation is 20W/50 multigrade for engine, gearbox and back end and I found a company called rye oil that seem...
