Re: Injector issue

Yes, it's the same effect as popping a plug lead off a petrol engine. Easy to spot, just take the side plate off the pump you'll see the four little plungers, start the engine and you'll soon see if one plunger isn't moving. Ours originally had three stuck but it still fired up on one cylinder! Free...

Re: Hand brake lever '57 FNM

Sorry should've updated this sooner. After a failed attempt to attack the rivet with a grinder (not enough room even to get a 4" in there), we took the latch handle off and the little nut holding the rod in place and managed to re-assemble without taking handle off the shaft. Still took several go's...

Re: identify the tractor type

Gwili Jones in Hafod looks to be sort of local to you. Fast Parts Car and Commercial in Abercarn may have what you need, I know not that close to Swansea but any traditional type of garage should be able to help or point you to their suppliers.

Re: Crankcase Breather

Unfortunately I don't have it to hand here, logic suggested it should have oil but I can't recall seeing an oil level mark on the casing hence the question. The mesh looked like a deteriorating perforated plastic substance which didn't look right.

Crankcase Breather

Hi, Thought I'd pop the top off the the little breather pot. Found a mush of oily sludge and what appeared to the remains of rapidly disintegrating sort of mesh pot scrubber substance. The filtery bit doesn't seem to be available and is easy enough to create, but I'm guessing there doesn't need to b...

Re: Meshed gear noise when being pushed in neutral.

The final drive on there creatures is a slightly unusual arrangement. The diff isn't in the back axle! It's actually between the brake shafts, then there is a reduction gear each side driving the halfshafts, that's the best way I can explain it (I'm sure someone else can do better!). There is a good...

Re: New to me fordson power major

Your latest pic shows 2 blue flanges. If you go back to your 'fantastic wiring solution!' pic, in the bottom left there is the silver starter flange visible. the s/n should be on the top of the blue flange next to the silver flange. You'll need to really get the paint off down to bare metal to see it.

Re: Ford 3000 Force manifold heater installation

A poor starting 3000 is unusual, points towards worn bores, rings, pistons etc. Have you done a compression test? The set up you're installing is very similar to the fitting in a Massey35 with a P3 engine. If you have one locally to look at it will give an idea of wire gauge etc. Once fitted don't u...

Hi,
5B25E - 5=1965, B=February, 25=25th, and if the E could be B then day shift.

C716206 Serial number, C suggesting a U.S. build.

Hi, a quick google suggests a B prefix would be a Basildon machine. Pics are always good for ID purposes.

Re: New to me fordson power major

The casting code for the block is behind the dynamo, which I think is the N4B in your photo, November 4th, 1958.

Re: New to me fordson power major

The serial number on mine is on the top flange where the starter is fitted. It's in a slightly odd 'font', almost hand written, and reads vertically. I had to look several times as I could see the engraving, but the orientation I was trying to read it coupled with the style didn't make sense.

Re: Centre bonnet hinge.

I've got the same problem. I did consider a 'piano hinge' to fix the two halves together, and then leaving the rod in place to secure the assembly but apart from looking awful the geometry would mean one side would open ok, the other would try to rotate around two different axis and bind together. I...

Re: coolant level in the Fordson Major?

Hi chaps, sorry for the sudden disappearance. With great thanks to the staff of the Eye Department at St Thomas's in London for fixing a partly detached retina. Scary stuff.
My hands are up, I was wrong! E27N, heaven knows what made me think it was E1A.
Anyhow, back to topic...

I was just going by the E27N in middle of the casting, mine is 18J7 (?) and has E1A in the middle.

Re: New Major electrical system

Doing some basic maths... 2x35w headlights = 70 2x5w combination side lights = 10 2x5w trailer lights = 10 1x3w oil light =3 So the max draw through the keyswitch feed is 93w call it 96, divide by 12 is 8 amps, then whatever the control box and starter primary coil uses and I would think 10-15A fuse...

Re: New Major electrical system

Unfortunately there's a lot of already toasted wire in the dash that's unidentifiable so some replacement lines will need to go in, including a fused live feed to the key to hopefully stop it happening again, although I suspect the loose bare ended lighting wiring may have had a hand in it. Thanks f...

New Major electrical system

Hi, I'm starting to pick my way into the electrics on this tractor so some questions to start with... The key/ light switch needs replacing, which is better - metal or plastic? The regulator - clean' test, reset, repair? Bin it, get a new one? Are the headlights (currently missing) twin aspect ie di...
