Re: PTO work with a non-NP PTO

I can see how it could damage the casting but a pto shaft with a shear bolt coupling should give enough protection though, I used to have to carry a pack of spare bolts and a spanner in the toolbox when topping

Re: PTO work with a non-NP PTO

Hi Sandy, used a PZ mower, tedder and baler on a major, as well as a pto sawbench and pto driven hydraulic log splitter. Used them at various RPMs and as the tractor never had a working rev counter I used to set the revs by 'feel'. The only issue I ever had was using a 6ft single blade topper, at lo...

Re: 1954 FMD - Time to fix the white smoke!

Try some hard work as Sandy says, but if that doesn't cure it my money is on bearings and rusted/worn cam lobes and rollers in the bottom of the pump. Especially as you say it had siezed up and the pig tail pipe was missing, sounds like water or condensation has got in and wrecked the pump, it has k...

Re: Live drive or no live drive

Hi Jim, if the selector lever is high box up, low box down it's live drive. If it's low box up, high box down then it's non-live drive

Re: DPA pump stuck plungers

I think you are right about the in line pump and delivery valves Sandy, although an in line pump is far easier to strip apart than a CAV, as long as the settings aren't altered

Re: DPA pump stuck plungers

Well to answer my own question, yes it does work! Removed the pump which would bleed ok but had no fuel to the injectors after marking its position for timing. Connected one of the outlets to the injector tester and pumped it up to 1000 psi, turned the pump by hand until the corresponding gallery li...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

Ahh yes sorry Chris, I'm terrible remembering names! It can be a bit hit and miss with some of the gasket sets and what they contain and it's not always clear what to use. If you have had it running see if there are any signs of a leak at the sump. Can you see where the leak is between the plate and...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

Timing cover rear plate gasket. If your cam shaft has a single bolt holding the gear on (as opposed to the 3 smaller bolts on the early one) it should be the gasket with a slot. Are you in the UK? If you are I may well have one I can post to you if you have trouble getting one without the kit

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

Thinking back to when I last took one off I left the wheels on. Jack the tractor up so the weight is off the front wheels but they are still just touching the ground and support it under the gearbox. Take the weight of the tombstone on an engine crane, remove the mountIng bolts and steering link, ha...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

If you have an engine crane you can remove the front wheels and steering drag link and lift the whole thing away from the front in one piece, but you will need a strong assistant and be careful it doesn't swing into your legs, it's bloody heavy!

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

There is a gasket between the plate and the block, there are 2 different types of gasket depending on which type of camshaft retainer you have ,the engine rebuild gasket kit contains both type of gasket. You will have to remove the pulley, cover, timing gears and front plate to do it. I'm pretty sur...

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

I have done it in the past by removing the starter motor and getting someone to help me by jamming a piece of 2" x 1" batten against the starter ring gear while I undid the bolt. A ring spanner on the bolt and a good belt on the spanner with a heavy mallet will sometimes be enough to undo it

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

If you remove or re-tighten the timing case cover bolts use a torque wrench, the bolts are only tightened to 12 ft/lbs (but check that figure in case i'm wrong). They are very soft and can snap off in the block easily if over tightened

If you haven't already done it, grease the bearing using the grease nipple on the axle trumpet. This will often cure a small leak

Re: Fordson SM Clutch Play

If you find it is the crank seal causing the leak, before removing the old seal check the pulley for wear. If there is a groove worn on the pulley form the old seal, note the depth of the old seal in the timing cover and when you install the new one set it at a slightly different depth so it contact...

Re: Transporting a thermostat

Good to see they are working ok Sandy. I wonder how much hotter the engine runs without a shrouded thermostat? The Leyland 4/98 engine (also in many JCBs) will overheat with the wrong or no thermostat fitted, the correct one has a disc on the bottom to close off the bypass hose when it opens

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

Sorry if i'm stating the obvious here but it's very important to only tighten the timing cover bolts to 12-15 ft/lbs, they are very soft and WILL snap off in the block if they are overtightened!

Re: Timing gear noises and oil presssure - petrol engine

I have never dealt with a petrol engine so forgive me if i'm talking rubbish, but I have heard of the 3 bolts coming loose on the early camshaft gears on the diesel engines. The gear won't come off but it will eventually wear through the front casing and will cause a noise from the front of the engi...
