Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That to me sounds good. I never recommend heat as it changes things in bad ways if not applied correctly in a heat treatment, all the worse in drought (we'd had it until a few weeks ago and it was combined with hellish heat which is even worse). I wish our temperature were a bit cooler but can't com...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
That was a very sound decision. I've seen too many not taking such precautions with expensive results. Good to know that the pump turns well, diesel and oil could help a lot too for the drive shaft. Maybe that's what's holding the engine! The two bolts you mention are for the crank pulley remover, t...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
I wouldn't be too bothered about that, I've seen others like it. As for the injector pump get a good bit of engine oil in there before you refit the oil and pig tail, therefore lubricating the pump. Diesel will bleed through but that's nothing to worry about. The pic is fine, I can see the chain and...

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major
I recommend you fix the stop lever first, it will allow you to oil the rack at the stop casing end from outside. From 1613500 till 08B-756398 the lift pump was as you have, yours is totally original. I would keep the extras on, it will have far more power available. It's perfectly possible to fit hy...

Those look good, I like those details on the Triple-D. I don't think I'll be able to avoid getting these books! How are your tractors doing?

Re: Our new 4/62 Super Major
That is the serial number (engines were only different if replaced, Ebro had a separate engine number but it was in addition to the serial number), April 62, one of the last before the minimec. The numbers were changed in November 61 . The stop lever is not easy to work on, probably easiest to remov...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
Good work, yes the injectors need to come off to put oil in the bores. Glad the throttle is free, should hopefully make it easier to get it running. I wouldn't say the oil is very clean but it looks quite ok. Feel and smell are important too, if it feels thin or smells old or of diesel you should ch...

Re: Blue Force hardback books
Have you seen these books yourself? They look great but having so many books already I don't know if they maybe have pics not found elsewhere or hidden details previously unknown. Would like to know as temptation is high but I need to know a bit more before deciding that I need them (which will prob...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
You should be able to tell what is stuck, if the rack moves a few thou then it will be a plunger or more, if it doesn't move at all the rack is stuck. Oil and diesel are both worth having in the pump, Brian also recommended ATF but can't say anything there as I've never tried that yet (still haven't...

Re: Hordraulic loader ram seals leaking
The tops of those rods will need a good clean and polish before installing new seals, or damage is inevitable. Also there’ll probably be a lip formed below the pin hole which will need removing. If entrusting the work to a specialist hydraulic repairer beware of mission creep. I recently took a lea...

Re: Next move for our 1954 Fordson Major Diesel
The fact that the stop lever won't move suggests that either a plunger (or more than one) or the rack are stuck. Don't use the starter, apart from potentially damaging the engine you're likely to damage the starter as well. I would check all levels first (after a general clean of the outside and any...

I suspect it probably was the containers, you can always have such issues although I agree it's not common. Do keep an eye on it, otherwise you might miss something.

Re: Oil volume in rear axel
That sounds like you have poor gearbox seals, does the level rise? If so they need fixing. Did you clean the hydraulic strainer? Capacity is 9 gallons with or without hydraulics or PTO. Remember to do this on level ground (or take gradients into account).

Re: Fordson Industrial Engine serial Numbers
Dexta's had separate engine numbers, running from 1400000 to 1553322 and Super Dexta's from 1600000 to 1664496, this is different from the serial number which was 957E prefixed until November 61 (Petrol models were 959E) and was stamped on the bell housing flange next to the timing inspection cover....

Re: Fordson Industrial Engine serial Numbers
Very strange, wonder if Dexta's are the same as otherwise there's no way to distinguish between the two after November 61. The 08 was for Dagenham to use a computer on spares and stuff of that sort. The reversed C is probably just a mistake from loading up the stamper one day (I'm sure there will be...

Re: Fordson Industrial Engine serial Numbers
Sounds like your quite busy. As far as I know petrol tractors were available until the very end, but they were rare. The only engine that was discontinued early on was the TVO in March 57 (both tractors and industrials). Not sure I understand what you mean with reduced prefixes, the only cases I'm a...

Re: Transmission stuck on parked Major
Can't quite read the serial number on the Super. The main reason for seeing the plug is to see if rust or dirt are in worrying areas, but even if all that is ok I suggest removing the selector plate to keep fragments out of the gearbox as it sounds like the plug has had it. A scrapy should have a sp...

Re: E27n with L4 conversion oil leaks
A SAE 30HD will be fine, but you will need to clean out the inside before filling up again if there was straight SAE 30 in there. Mixing oils can be really nasty. Many people use more modern multigrade HD oils, but that depends on what you want in the engine, I always recommend whatever the engine w...

Re: Transmission stuck on parked Major
They look lovely, more pics would be great. If you can get one of the filler plug it will give us a better idea of what's happened, but I don't see an easy way to remove it without issues from your comments. Probably best to remove the selector plate to keep any fragments out, that should help in ch...

Re: Transmission stuck on parked Major
Glad you've got them, sounds like an early one, there will be a pointer to line up with a notch in the pulley, which will be wide. Depends on what the drive is, you should probably be able to temporarily disconnect it anyway. The pics should clarify all this.

Re: Fordson Industrial Engine serial Numbers
Just reviving this to add a few missing details. Lorry numbers are of three distinct types: ET6 type, with the ET6 having the Ford V8 and the ET7 having the P6 coming beforehand, introduced March 54, Mk2 from 500E-46803 500E- 4 cyl petrol - up to Mk2 100 mm bore, Mk2 onwards 95 mm bore 502E- 4 cyl d...

I would have too, very good price indeed. Looks like a Super Major between 1613500 and 08B-756398, don't know anything about the extras though.
