Re: Our '53 FMD

Nice to see original leads! Sorry to dissappoint you, but your solenoid isn't original (it's the post 62 version with a welded bracket instead of the original cast one). I would guess you have the early cowling, but it's not very easy to see that.

This one seems to have the later mudguards and the early front cowling.

the dynamo on Ebro's is also made by them.
Here's a pic I just found of the dynamo. Our dynamo's plates are very worn and unreadable.

If you look at the description it says it's the twin battery clamp, it matches the one in the latest parts book.

Here's a good pic of the twin battery clamp from eBay.

original radiator too with the brass neck. Are the sidelights the type with the anti-glare ring on the rim or the plain type with plain rims? Billy has the solid filler and the Ebro side lights have the anti-glare ring, the rain hole being next to the screw hole, rather than two at opposite positio...

That's a home made tow bar. 15W40 will be fine as long as it's mineral, you need 9 quarts.

I have seen it done with ice too, don't cool it down too much to avoid it breaking.

Re: Our '53 FMD

Lovely Major there. You have the original negative lead too, but yours is in one piece, Billy's battery connector needs fixing as it's in bits, and Davie doesn't have the original connector. Do you have a pic of the solenoid end? If you can find a battery clamp (like billy's one, see this thread: ht...

Re: Gearbox/hydraulic oil type.

You can use universal oil but you can also use the pre 1959 spec, which has SAE 90 in the gearbox and rear axle. I recommend the previous spec, but get what you can, as mentioned earlier ensure it's mineral oil. Parts were stamped EnFo until 1963, when some became FoMoCo. If you have earlier stock p...

Both companies made drives, If you look at the Farm Major thread (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=8365) there's a good pic of a Smiths drive.
Odd combinations were possible in the later period.

Re: Tachometer Tales: tell your story!

There are several anticlockwise tachometers, all use minimec's, and there are two basic types, the Super Major type, and the NP Super Major type, the difference being in the PTO band, two at 1200 and 1600 rpm for the Super Major, and one at 1500 rpm for the NP Super Major. The earliest ones (54 to 5...

I think it's 1 1/2", but I'll check tomorrow. That isn't too important though, as long as there's a coil sufficient to hold fuel and oil there you'll be fine, as that will keep the dirt out.

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer

The on/off tap was a British requirement from 1962, other places kept the ball and spring (that's what Davie has). I think if you have a Dexta sold in Britain from 1962 it was legally necessary (I'll check a service letter tommorrow). Both have the same effect, so get what you need for your Dexta, i...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Pipe wise you'll be better with copper pipes as per original, they'll be less likely to leak and easier to keep separate from one another. John's talked you through the injector pump, I think some oil will be good too. Your starter isn't original, the original one was lever operated with the solenoi...

Re: Length of Fordson Dexta clutch adjustment rod

Looks like Ilkka has exactly the same problem as Brian did. I find it difficult to understand why aftermarket suppliers can't get parts right first time, as it would be much easier and closer to original than what they do.

I suggest you find a pic of a paper gasket so you can see what needs sealing and look at the parts book to ensure the o-rings are all there.

It's not that bodgy, its just been maltreated, as when new it cleared the bonnet (but only just). I think the spark arrestor fell to bits, but you should be able to find another one.

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Looking good. Try opening the gap in the exhaust elbow carefully so you can remove the bottom of the Yuba spark arrestor (another Australian feature), you don't need to have that fixed for a start although you might get a bit of a shock as it fires up, as a straight exhaust is loud. Look around for ...
