Re: Tachometer Tales: tell your story!

There are several anticlockwise tachometers, all use minimec's, and there are two basic types, the Super Major type, and the NP Super Major type, the difference being in the PTO band, two at 1200 and 1600 rpm for the Super Major, and one at 1500 rpm for the NP Super Major. The earliest ones (54 to 5...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

I think it's 1 1/2", but I'll check tomorrow. That isn't too important though, as long as there's a coil sufficient to hold fuel and oil there you'll be fine, as that will keep the dirt out.

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer

The on/off tap was a British requirement from 1962, other places kept the ball and spring (that's what Davie has). I think if you have a Dexta sold in Britain from 1962 it was legally necessary (I'll check a service letter tommorrow). Both have the same effect, so get what you need for your Dexta, i...

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Pipe wise you'll be better with copper pipes as per original, they'll be less likely to leak and easier to keep separate from one another. John's talked you through the injector pump, I think some oil will be good too. Your starter isn't original, the original one was lever operated with the solenoi...

Re: Length of Fordson Dexta clutch adjustment rod

Looks like Ilkka has exactly the same problem as Brian did. I find it difficult to understand why aftermarket suppliers can't get parts right first time, as it would be much easier and closer to original than what they do.

Re: Super Major lift arms

I suggest you find a pic of a paper gasket so you can see what needs sealing and look at the parts book to ensure the o-rings are all there.

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

It's not that bodgy, its just been maltreated, as when new it cleared the bonnet (but only just). I think the spark arrestor fell to bits, but you should be able to find another one.

Re: 60 farm fordson major diesel

Looking good. Try opening the gap in the exhaust elbow carefully so you can remove the bottom of the Yuba spark arrestor (another Australian feature), you don't need to have that fixed for a start although you might get a bit of a shock as it fires up, as a straight exhaust is loud. Look around for ...

Re: Super Major lift arms

I say the control valve implying anything between the hydraulic pump and the aux. service valve, although I don't think it will be the control valve either. A leaking check valve will make gear changing difficult and it will hold the arms more when in gear and not moving, Davie does this and pretty ...

Re: Super Major lift arms

David needs to see if the arms will hold if the aux. service valve is pulled out to see if the leak is the piston seal or the control valve (or others, but definitely in two groups separated by the aux. service valve), then he will be able to find the leak more easily, I suggest he does a bit more w...

Re: Super Major lift arms

I don't think David has one as he has a 62 Super Major, the arms should hold firm with the engine off, definitely overnight, preferably a lot more, so although the drop control might slow the descent a bit it won't stop it, Super Billy doesn't survive overnight with the drop control fully closed. Bi...

Re: Tachometer Tales: tell your story!

There are lots of kinds, looking at parts books there are two manufacturers, AC and Smiths. Then there is the first type (used 54-58), the second type (used 58-62), the third type (rotates in the opposite way, used 62-63) and the fourth type (used 63-64). Within these types there are speeds in mph a...

I think there's a leak there, but try some work first and see. Be careful as you may get erratic raising and holding.

Re: Exhauster?

That's indeed the case, it's only from the introduction of the minimec that having an exhauster type pump changed the kind of tachometer used, with the angle drive type for exhauster type pumps, and the pump type for the other minimec's like on Dexta's. Earlier Major's all used the angle drive tacho...

Re: Exhauster?

The return is through the normal lift pump mounting point. The changes to accomodate the minimec also affected that area, adding two holes above and below the exhauster feed and blanking out the ones further forward for the previous type pump rear mounting.

The exhauster is efectively the vacuum pump in the vacuum brakes (an extra for operating heavy trailers with industrial Major's). Here's the vacuum brake manual so you can see how it works. http://www.fordson.se/8_9_Broms_sl%E4p_och_Elsystem_Suplement_Verkstadshandbok_001-012_och_001-010.pdf Because...

Re: Beam hauling

Mr. MacGregor has a std. gearbox, I don't know much about the torque converter ones except that they seem to lack a clutch pedal and they have a lever on the steering column a bit like the Dexta throttle that has something to do with moving; the cab was fixed years ago, but our carelessness in leavi...

Re: Beam hauling

Mr. MacGregor is a 1975 3CII, he actually came from Roy Bridge, and needs the hole for the bucket pin in the dipper corrected for wear (the bush being totally gone and a new one going straight through with plenty of play), the RH brake fixed to stop it locking and the clutch relining.
