Re: Major Brake Drum Cover

Thanks very much John looks and measures about right, one of your Major's no doubt will have it fitted soon! I'll see if I can find Billy's ones, but I can't remember coming across them at the moment so it might take a while.

Re: Fordson Dexta rear hydraulics problem - teardown and rebuild on YouTube…

Now seen the whole thing, I'm not keen on some of the things they do, but they did fix it. Didn't see them opening the unloading valve plug (a common problem).

Good find. Could you post a pic please? I'm keen to see if I can find Billy's ones lying around somewhere.

Re: Major Brake Drum Cover

The window on the cover is a relic from the E27N days (the part no is E27N-2774B), when the back plate was 90 degrees forwards from the position on the Major (E1ADKN-2213 & E1ADKN-2214 replaced E27N-2213B & E27N-2214B). The access to the expander is through a slot in the backplate behind the bull pi...

Re: Wanted - Fordson Major publications

The repair manual was linked to on the old forum ( https://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/ubb/Forum4/HTML/001080.html ). Not sure everything is there but it's quite enough for most things. Service letters are rare, I'm also on the lookout for them as they cover lots of things that were missed in the man...

Re: Front axle overhaul

Sounds like quite a battle, Super Billy's tie rod was also quite a fight to dismantle, but it sounds like your axle has been given a harder time. The repro bushes are wrong, the original ones were E27N-3109 (upper, with a blind grove) and E27N-3110 (lower with a through groove). As far as lubricatio...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

If you have the oil leaking into the rear axle (which is often said to cause this failure) then you'd have to remove the gearbox casting altogether, if not I'm not sure you can manage without doing that. That seal is probably worth doing anyway if you go this far as then it should survive for longer...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

A splitting rail should make life pretty easy, other than that just make sure everything is well held and won't come crashing down. Hope you don't need to replace any gears but there's only one way to find out, the bearing shouldn't be too difficult to find, it's part no. N-7065E, an N212 bearing. T...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

Ouch, that bearing has gone on other tractors and is not the easiest to replace as you'll see in the manual. https://www.fordson.se/4B_V%E4xell%E5da_Suplement_Verkstadshandbok_016-035.pdf The bits mostly look like the roller cage, but it does look like there might be a damaged tooth from them, altho...

Re: How soon after an engine rebuild does one need to retorque.

It depends on the engine, but older engines generally don't need new bolts or studs (if they're in good condition) but check manuals about that for each engine. I can confirm that neither Major's nor Dexta's need new bolts or studs.

Re: My New Performance Super Major Story.

Glad the steering is better. I would check the axle first as it's easier to fix than the steering box, make sure the spindle arms are tight and are set at 0.025" from the extension (with no jacks). There should be no play in them, but they can become a problem if at some stage they were allowed to g...

Very handy rule Shepp, hope Davie never needs it but if he does we now know it.
Don't forget to reset the tappet clearances after retorquing the head.

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

You might want to reset the free play, it's a bit involved (compared to how simple a single clutch is) but it can sort your PTO trouble. With the stop pin in the lower hole shorten the release rod until the PTO stops turning (if the pedal doesn't hit the pin when doing that the clutch will have bott...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

The upper hole is for using the hydraulics when ploughing, allowing gear changing without affecting the PTO and hydraulics, the lower hole is for PTO work to enable stopping the PTO if needed. Never change the position of the PTO lever unless the clutch is fully down (stop pin in lower hole) as othe...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

Very nice Power Major, I see you've got a much earlier bonnet. I think several parts are actually much later than a 58, more like a 60, but only the serial number and casting codes can answer that. Looks to me like the handbrake isn't fully off from the pics, so that might be what's wrong, but not t...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

I'm not saying people didn't do this but there is no design feature to allow changing unless all gears are stationary. Anything else is likely to cause severe damage (there are ways to minimise that but they involve learning the hard way, which can make things like that worse). The comments about th...

Re: Fordson major grinding noise

I think you've answered your own question to some extent if you change on the move, as that willl cause real trouble. If however you didn't I'm not too sure why that's happened, remember that Major gearboxes always make some noise anyway.

Good you've got that fixed. These things sometimes happen but if they work then as long as nothing suffers I don't see why it should be a problem.
Now to enjoy your Super Dexta!

Old Hywel is right, you should get those from Agriline too if you don't already have them. There are others available too, as well as original ones on ebay and in scrapy's.

The manual agrees with that but I don't think you'll find many boxes without it as the load on that area is quite high.

Re: Steering box refurbishment

No shims suggest high wear, but there probably would be play if that were the case. If everything looks ok and there is no play just keep it as it is, I should also say there should be as little preload as possible, but never any play. If there is play with no shims the bearings probably need changi...

Re: How soon after an engine rebuild does one need to retorque.

It tends to depend a bit, but you should always do it after the first warmup (when the tappets also need resetting) then officially at 50 hours, but I would do it more to get the best sealing.
