yes, it needs oil in it to work correctly. it is an "Oil Bath Filter" system
and yes, they do need to be cleaned out periodically - you can use the same oil in it as you use in the engine.

Re: New to me fordson power major
Congrats on finally finding that number!!
and yeah, very unusual for that high of a number to be in that location.

number should be where the arrow is pointing.. right next to the starter.

Re: New to me fordson power major
it would seem the original engine was swapped out to an earlier model with no numbers...
that is my best guess anyway.. and I am fairly new to these beasts myself... Billy26F5 would have far more knowledge than I.

Re: New to me fordson power major
if there is no number behind the starter.. then my only guess would be that the original engine was replaced at some point with an older version (before they started stamping the numbers on the engine block itself)

Re: New to me fordson power major
you are looking too far inward... and need to wipe some of the grime off..
the number will be directly behind the starter... like this...

Re: New to me fordson power major
The serial behind the starter was discontinued after 1380939, relocated to the front top RH flange. Clean it well to see the number (I can't read it in the pic). cant read it because, to my eye, there is nothing there.. not even a scratch. perhaps the engine was replaced at some point with an older...

Re: Where to source a new radiator for our Major?
thanks for the info, leeroy.. looking at Agriline, they want over $400 for a new replacement, and from the looks of it, there is no filler neck attached... or did you get a used one? anyway.. quick update.. other half topped up the rad and said it barely took any at all to get it back up to where it...

Re: Where to source a new radiator for our Major?
Thanks guys.. I will look into finding a place to re-core.. not sure where exactly the coolant went to, but I do know it was not in the oil pan.. which is a good thing, lol the oil - aside from being blacker than night - was fine.. no signs of any contamination We do have a new temp sensor/gauge com...

Where to source a new radiator for our Major?
We are in the USA, so buying from Agriline would involve some pretty serious shipping charges... Need radiator, new filler neck, and should probably get a new cap, too.. while we are at it, for a 1954 Major Diesel Had topped up the radiator couple of weeks ago.. I ran it some - maybe 5-6 hrs.. and t...

Re: Water
if it is shedding fibers, painting is not going to help it much.. it needs a coat of resin to seal it up properly and for strength
then paint it.
then paint it.

Re: coolant level in the Fordson Major?
Well, pretty sure the temp gauge is definitely dead.. after about 3 - 3.5hrs of running, mostly backhoe work (higher revs) and a little scraping of the driveway, this is what it looked like.. https://media.discordapp.net/attachments/723011339097735256/745448870682558534/dead_temp_gauge.jpg Now to fi...

Re: coolant level in the Fordson Major?
the adjustability I believe is still there, but yeah, she has a lot of reinforcement in various places due to the loader and backhoe installations. We just got a manual for the front loader yesterday.. not a lot to it, but every little bit of info is useful.. will be scanning it for long term safe k...

Re: coolant level in the Fordson Major?
so topped up the radiator yesterday... she took between a half gallon and 3/4 gallon before it just stayed in the filler neck. Will keep an eye on things - dont want her to get overheated. Have not run her in a couple of days now.. was seriously sore yesterday after getting those weed trees cleaned ...

Re: coolant level in the Fordson Major?
Hi Billy26F5 - and thanks for the info! so for the oil pressure, if I get a new line, we should be ok? that would be great! :D Temp gauge - it had been running a little bit, but I didn't really look at it after working for a little while - will have to try to remember to do that. lol We popped the c...

coolant level in the Fordson Major?
Howdy all! New here. We just picked up a 1954 Fordson New Major with a Sherman F8 Backhoe and a Wagner Iron Works front loader. Overall the old girl is in pretty good shape, but there are still a few minor things that need to be sorted out.. top priority is going to be getting working gauges in her....
