Re: Oil change.

I should renew all the oil really. Having said that, when I had the hydraulic cover off last year I topped that oil up which was pretty clean anyway. And I've changed the engine oil today. Would you expect the oil light to take a few seconds to light after changing the oil? Usually it comes on prett...

Re: Oil change.

Ok thanks sandy.
I reckon the old seal must still be in there then.

Hopefully I've not screwed up the new seal which was fine originally, other than not wanting to fit very easily.

Oil change.

Just thought I'd renew the engine oil today. But I have a small issue which means I'll have to partly redo the job tomorrow. I finished the job and started the tractor and found pretty quickly there was significant oil leaking from the filter Obviously I didn't get the new rubber sealing ring in qui...

Ok thanks.
I'll give it a 20 minute drive now and again around the fields.
The only trouble I've had with mice in the past was when they chewed through a radiator hose on my car when they were thirsty.

Cold start and winter in general.

It was the coldest night of the year so far last night. -5 so it reckoned. So thought it a good test to see how well the FSM started. ( It's stored in an old barn, not outside). Glad to say it started nearly as well as usual. Took perhaps a second and a half to start. Didn't use the cold start butto...

Re: Views on cabins.

I've not seen any name on it, but I'll have a look on the web. See if I can work out what make it is.

It does say TIM in a red diamond on the front panel of glass however.

I'll be keeping the cab on for now. I've got no pressing reason to take it off.

Re: Views on cabins.

That red seat there looks exactly like the one on my mf135. Yes, it certainly makes it a bit difficult to get on and off the tractor. Have to be careful not to knock it into gear when getting on and not getting my foot wedged inbetween stuff before jumping off. Not entirely sure why, but it is reall...

Views on cabins.

My FSM came with a cabin. Well, most of one. No doors. I always intended to remove it as I much prefer the look of the tractor without it. But, having done a few hours of pasture topping, I'm thinking to leave it on. It's invaluable when driving alongside hedges. Not many people seem to have them on...

Repairing instruments.

A couple of the instruments on my FSM don't work. The tacho needle does flicker up and down. But I'd like to hopefully fix the tacho and the water temp guage sometime. Both mechanical. Trouble is I'm not sure if they can be repaired. I haven't checked yet where the fault is on either. If they can't ...

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

Brings to mind another question...

Is it possible to tell if the engine has ever been rebuilt?

Without dismantling, I would imagine not. But I'm far from an expert.

Re: Water

That looks good.

How much does the bowser weigh when you fill it up?
Looks pretty big. How steep a slope will the tractor cope with, with that in row?

Also, looks nice and warm there. Where is it if you don't mind me asking?

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

I do intend to have a go at fixing the 135. But it's low priority at the moment. And I partly bought the FSM because at £900 I thought it may well be not much more for a fully working (except the locked differential - now fixed for almost £0) large tractor than it might be to fix the mf135. Especial...

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

It's good to know that fordsons have such good engines. It still surprises me every time I turn the key and the engine starts straight away. My other tractor is a mf 135 approx 1970, that was left here in the barn when we bought the house. It's in good condition in many ways, but is very hard to sta...

Re: How do you know if the engine is healthy?

Thanks for the replies. I'm pleased to say that I don't think there's any trace of oil or water anywhere they shouldn't be on mine. It doesn't smoke most of the time at all. I used it for the first time last week to pasture top about 2 acres. ( That's bush hogging in the US I think). It's a large 1....

How do you know if the engine is healthy?

When I bought my 1961 super major, the thing that was very important was that it started well. And it does. I assumed up until now that this was a good indicator. But I have read somewhere since that a fordson major engine will pretty well always start well, even if it's pretty knackered, which made...

Re: Gearbox/hydraulic oil type.

Ok, thanks. Think I have 10L of 15w/40 mineral oil. Can't remember if it says for diesel engines or anything specific. But I'll see if there's any 15w/30 universal oil available around and about. By the way, what does CNH stand for? Have this on the back of my tractor. Is it a fairly standard piece ...

Gearbox/hydraulic oil type.

Need to top up the oil in the rear axle box after recent work. Looked on this forum and the manual and elsewhere, and as far as I can tell it should be sae 30 oil. Thought that was simple enough, but Looking in my local bricomarche store ( I live in France), they don't have any, except small bottles...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

Must admit to being a bit concerned as to why the split pin or nut failed in the first place. Don't know when it failed either. 6 months ago or 50 years ago. I will just be checking everything is clean before reassembling. The very few times I have driven it there was no nasty noises or anything, so...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

It's fixed. Had to unbolt and move the hydraulic pump to remove the reduction gear. It just didn't have enough room otherwise. Then getting the pinion out still inside the carrier was easy It was then obvious what had happened. The nut and split pin were gone from the end of the push rod. The split ...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

Well, I unscrewed the axle casing as much as I could without it coming off completely, which was about 2cm-ish. This created more room. But still not enough to remove the reduction gear. It's caught mainly between the pinion housing, the hydraulic pump, ridges and bumps at the back of the casing and...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

I've had another go at lifting the gear out. There's just not enough room. The front of the gear is right up against the pinion holder. The back/bottom of the gear is right up against the hydraulic pump. The bearings at the right of the gear hub are not really close to clearing the casing. Hope thes...

Re: Super major diff locked on.

Well after weeks of waiting I finally received some tools. I have managed to spend several hours over the past few days having a further go at this problem. I have got nowhere. Shepp, I understand what you are saying about all the dismantling, but I had already removed the top cover when I read your...
