Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

Apparently this was the cause of alot of Ford engine problems https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=5_7PtvziB-Q That's a great visual explanation of cylinder liner cavitation. My suspicion that this was going to be one of those weeks was only strengthened by the shock arrestor next to the hot water cylinde...

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

The o-ring slot gets corroded from above, eventually this gets through to the o-ring, allowing it to expand and stop sealing. This then means the liners need changing and the block needs work to make the new o-rings seal. Thank you Hywel and Sandy. Not been a good day for spannering. Decided to be ...

It’s called rust :D Usually near the sealing ring in the base of the block.
Sorry, if I sound thick, but this is because lack of antifreeze causes ice to form within the engine, which distorts the block in some way, allowing moisture to enter and rust to form...?

The liners in a Major can rust through, particularly if antifreeze hasn’t been used.
Sounds nasty. I wonder what the mechanism is behind that.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

Column change Rubiks cube gearbox! Fortunately this one is claimed to have a H pattern box. If it weren't for the porosity issue it would be looking pretty good. Many threads on various forums about older Fords and owners spending thousands on relining them and so on without fixing the problem. Har...

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

Basically there are no free lunches or easy choices. One way or another, you have to pay. Pay directly in cash, or pay in time (and so, indirectly, money) to learn and fix things.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

On the surface it looks like a nice restoration. I would think it's had new clocks in it. Ah, thank you, hadn't considered the possibility of new clocks. So if looking at a Fordson or tractor of similar vintage a very low read on the hour meter shouldn't be taken as gospel even on a very tidy machi...

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

I saw they were claiming low hours, but looking at the top link ball and clutch pedal I would add at least 10000 hours to what they say. Yes, I did look askance at the careful phrasing of "showing a low 694 hours". It would be more likely that it had gone round the clock. Anyway, too far, too expen...

Haven't seen many New Performance machines being advertised so far...

EDIT That NPSM is back under this listing, and £500 lower than the original headline price.

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

Looks like a very late super, the new performance super major. That is for most people the most desirable Fordson major. Whether it is expensive or not is difficult to say. IMHO it is a well kept and quite original tractor. I like the cab to be honest and only the starter looks to be aftermarket. T...

Another expensive Super! The decals on the bonnet of this one look different to those I've seen elsewhere. Was it normal to have some variation or have they been added?

I think it's well worth having a belt pulley (see this to see what is possible with it: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8126)

The 3000 is the successor to the Super Dexta.
I have a mental image of the Super Dexta being the rough equivalent of an MF35, so the 3000 would be a kind of MF135.
And the successor to the Major might be a 4000, equivalent to an MF165 I suppose...

for that price i would want everything to be correct, it may not matter for use but it will affect the price if you ever came to sell it. I agree. I can't see the high-low lever, It looks better than many, I think it might have worked a bit after the new paint. Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

With regard to the comments from John and Sandy, I'm not looking for a pretty tractor (my Defender is an old nail and I'm fine with that) but paradoxically it may be that my best bet of finding a mechanically sound example is to look for ones on which the restorer has paid as much attention to the c...

Re: Choosing and finding a Fordson Major

At £5000+ you are in the ford 4000/4600 range, more modern and usually with a cab I see your point - I've been looking a lots of different makes and models, as you can imagine! - but if you choose wisely you'd hope to get a really good Major for £5,000. You probably wouldn't get a restored Ford 400...
