Re: Agriline Tach Cable
It'll work fine - for a while... The extra length will cause the cable to sag, and eventually (probably not long at all) it'll go the same as the other one, you really need it to be as straight as possible, sags and kinks will cause it to drag against the outer cover and this will eventually be the ...

Super Major Tacho/Rev counter
My Mate is looking for an ORIGINAL, working, anti-clockwise, Tacho/Rev counter, not the modern chinese crap that can be had on ebay.
Anyone got one they want to part with?
Cheers,
Shazbat

Re: log splitter
You are going to have similar issues with the log splitter - if you are using 90W oil. Either warm it up first or use 30W oil. Also you are going to have to wedge your auxilliary (not the TPL one) lift control lever up in the up position and the return will either have to be connected to the main TP...

Re: post knocker
Then I reckon it's the pump or thr relief valve - try the washer trick under the valve cover - if that doesn't help then it's still either the pump or the relief valve.
Pumps can be got hold of on Ebay - not sure about the relief valves though.

Re: post knocker
A 55 major should have 90 grade oil in it (and before anyone jumps in to correct me, I know a lot of people use universal 40 grade which is a lot thinner) anyway 90 grade is pretty thick and consequently really should be worked/warmed up and therefore thinner and easier to pump around before using i...

Re: post knocker
Hi Chris, Yes, but only using your extra spoolvalve, that I note you recently fitted - the other one will lift the TPL first then the knocker - not advisable... Also make sure your oil has warmed up and your knocker mast is well greased otherwise it might struggle to lift it, similarly if the seals ...

Re: On Ebay.
It's a Mconnell, with 2 ports, the flap controls whether it raises the lift arms or just the auxilliary - I have (a borrowed) one on my Major, but with 3 ports - 1 auxilliary and 2 linked to the lift arms, which makes it even rarer!
Will post pics later.

I bought mine a couple of months ago from www.vintagetractorespares.co.uk - perfect fit, all the holes lined up, I've heard some of them don't line up.

Re: Hydraulics Conundrum
For anyone interested... Filter was fine, Replaced pump - still the same. So it could only be the Pressure Relief Valve!!! Someone had already put a washer between the cover plate and the top of the valve, and no movement in the valve whatsoever. Therefore spring below it must be knackered, so I swa...

Re: Hydraulics Conundrum
Hi Brian, You were right about the low pressure, it barely registered 500psi, so I'm now on the look out for a new pump - there are currently 2 on ebay, 1 with the whole top cover - so wish me luck. Having said that, it could still be the pressure relieve valve in the spool control block, but as far...

Hydraulics Conundrum
Hi All, I posted a while back about oil being blown out of the exhaust elbow on my 1955 major, and various members suggested I work the old girl reasonably hard, which I have been doing, and I am happy to report back that after unblocking the rocker cover breather pipe to the inlet manifold, the oil...

OK, I get the message - I'll work her over the next few days and report back...
- just hope you guys are right, and its not piston rings etc, in which case it could make it worse and I'll be into a rebuild situation...
Cheers,

Hmm, so as long as I have a good oil pressure, I won't be doing any damage right?

Re: Oil from Exhaust Elbow
Hi Dave, Thanks for your input. I am not new to Majors, I am aware that these old girls need to be worked regularly, and I surely will in due course, with a loader, well laden trailers, harrows, occasional topping and hopefully I'll finally get around to some ploughing etc. But I have never experien...

Re: Oil from Exhaust Elbow
Hi Kim, No oil in water or water in oil. If its a simple head gasket, or even valves etc, then I would take that on. However if its sleeves, pistons etc etc then I am not sure I have the appetite for that! I need a definitive steer as to correct diagnosis before I decide what to do. Any input greatl...

Oil from Exhaust Elbow
Hello, This is my first post on this forum, so please be patient and gentle... I bought an FMD a couple of weeks ago that, whilst a bit smokey on startup, seemed to clear after a few minutes running. Yesterday, she decided to start spitting oil from the lowest point of the exhaust manifold that I un...
