4 cylinder D series engine
I'm thinking about fitting one of these 4 cylinder industrial engines in a 1959 power Major. Has anyone here done it and what were the pros and cons? Will the sump from a normal tractor engine fit the D series engine, will this solve the front axle problem associated with fitting a 6 cylinder D seri...

Re: Ford 7000
Is there an external service knob on the right hand side below the seat? It should be all the way out for external service, but sometimes it gets hit and goes half way in, try pulling it out again.

Re: Good luck Brian and Oscar
Thank you Brian and Oscar for all your knowledge shared over the years, it's a sad fact of life that people with your skills and knowledge are getting thin on the ground. Best of luck with whatever you have planned in the future.

Any select-o-speed owners?
Somebody nearby found a 5000 selectospeed in a barn and has it running, but it's not a pretty sight. It's driving ok after being idle for 30 years, but we need a bit more info on using it. I drove it, all the gears work but it runs away going downhill. Does anyone here know what causes this? Also is...

Re: Back end filings
Just an update. Rinsed it with kero and pulled as much filings as I could out with a magnetised screw driver. Then put in half and half kero and heavy gear oil, 6 gals, and drove around until it got warm and drained it. Tractor is working fine now, thanks Brian for all the tips. Trickiest job was ge...

Re: Ford 5000 aux valve with assister ram question
I think the system selector lever is only pushed down for ploughing. For everything else it is kept in the up position, as in the picture.

Re: Back end filings
Thanks Brian, I really appreciate your knowledge, people who worked on these when they were new are getting scarce around here too! I'm 50 myself so I probably won't be around in another 50 years either. :D The tractor was first registered in August 1965, but it's a bit like Trigger's broom at this ...

Re: Back end filings
It's had a back end loader (shear grab) on the linkage feeding silage every winter for almost 30 years, so I can't complain. The loader pushed/bounced up when the lift arms were in the fully raised position as I was reversing down a small slope. There are still a few 'guru' mechanics locally. One su...

Re: Ploughing with Ransomes TS102
Haven't fixed it yet. The spring that returns the lock mechanism is missing. This job is on my to-do list. :D Yes, it has bar points. I'm pretty new to ploughs. I believe the bar points were designed for stony ground. They seem to work well in the heavy land around here. There are really easy to ad...

Back end filings
I've had to take the lift cover off my 5000, lift arms were stuck in the raised position. The roll pin connecting the pin from the lift cylinder to the lift arm cradle sheared off, and there are filings everywhere. I have a few photos to upload later, how do people clean the filings out? Also is a r...

Re: D series 4 cylinder
Thanks again. I presume the old block and the D series are the same length, is there a longer stroke or wider bore on the D series? I suppose what I'm asking is where did the extra power (18hp?) come from? It seems a bit easier to get a 4 cylinder D series engine from a generator etc than a good use...

Re: Major steering box help!!
Did you get it back together? The knack is to take the whole box off the tractor and hold it upside down close to you and have grease on them. It's been 30 years since I did one though. Some of the play can be sorted by taking out or putting in shims when you put the side of the box back on. Hope th...

Re: D series 4 cylinder
Thanks Fletch, what did you do with the bottom of the bell housing where the sump doesn't match up, also how did you do the 'wishbone' underneath the sump? I see you had to cut the side channel for the filter, is it still strong enough? Looks very tidy, I like the plough. I use a TSR 102 behind a 19...

D series 4 cylinder
Just wondering what are the pros and cons of fitting a 4 cylinder industrial D series engine in a 1959 power major? Is all the hassle with the wishbone worth it for 65 hp, or would a D series 6 cylinder be a better option. Has anyone on here put the industrial 4 cylinder engine in a major, what sort...

Re: Ploughing with Ransomes TS102
Well done Adrian, I use a similar plough(TSR 102) on a 5000, I think yours has bar points? Did you ever get the turnover mechanism sorted, sometimes I have to push the catch down while ploughing so that it will turnover at the headland.

Re: Ford 5000
Did you get an engine yet? Have a 1989 6410 engine in a 1965 5000 here, the turbo engines from a 7600, 7610 will also fit. If the head is ok on yours they should interchange as well. The later early 1990's 40 series power star engines can also fit, but need a bit of modification, haven't seen one do...

Re: oil out the dipstick
It might be normal. Some of these tractors 'breathe' fairly hard. Have you tried holding your thumb tightly over the dipstick hole to see if there is much pressure there.

Re: Ford 5000 aux valve with assister ram question
Hi Brian, is the lower picture of a 6600/7600? I thought the spin on outside hydraulic filter only started to be fitted to the 600 range, I could be wrong as my 5000 is an early (1965) one.

Re: Ford 5000 aux valve with assister ram question
Sorry about the very slow reply, only saw your question now. I got around this problem in a round about way. I got fed up pulling out the auxiliary control knob every time I wanted to switch to external hydraulics from lift arms. I bought a spoolpack with 2 double acting and 2 single acting valves. ...

Re: Fordson E1A
Hi hesford, welcome to fordson tp. I would try get one that is running, with fairly good tinwork. One stored in a barn would be an advantage. They are a fairly simple tractor mechanically to work on and lots of parts are available on ebay.co.uk you should be able to get a respectable power major for...

Re: External Hydraulic Tapping
Hi whirly, there is an extra valve and lever that bolts on to the front of the lift control lever. They show up on ebay.co.uk from time to time, but they are never cheap, usually going for something like 200 pound sterling! It would solve your problem, giving seperate control of the lift arms from t...
