Re: 58 Major Butler headlamp reflectors
I had the same problem with my restoration The reflectors were shot but bulb holders and bulbs still ok.I dealt with it by cutting off the section containing the lugs that held the bulb holders on the originals and using araldite or similar adhesive to attach these to replacement reflectors.I had pu...

Re: Finished at last
Emiel. Thanks for the suggestion-its worth a try. Alternatively I could but her one for Christmas but I am not sure I could afford the wrapping paper ! Anyway, I dont fancy eating Christmas lunch on my own in the garage with the tractor !

Re: Finished at last
Ben.The rear lights are just running lights with a built in reflector. Nothing so sophisticated as brake lights on a Major. You're lucky if you actually have any brakes !

Re: Finished at last
The pictures were taken at the site of the local village hall with the cricket ground in the background of some of the pics. I did use her to cut the grass once during the summer before she was finished but up and running. I think a bit of a work out did her good. The cricket club has a set of gang ...

Re: Finished at last
Thanks for the comments. No I left the steering wheel as it was. I did think about getting it restored but it is not too bad and somehow it was just nice to have a reminder of how things were before we started. I did fit a new washer and nut as the originals had got rather tatty. Re the number plate...

Finished at last
From time to time I have posted pictures of the retoration of my 1957 Major. After some 4 years it is now finished, well, as finished as these projects ever are. There is always something to tweak. It is not perfect nor concours standard but I am very pleased with the result . A big thank you to thi...

Re: Earth lead location.
Not sure about a Super Major but the earth lead on my Major (1957) is attached to a nut and bolt, with suitable washers, which runs through the bulkhead where a separate cable is fixed to the other end of the bolt and attaches to two of the bolts that hold the starter motor in place. This is quite a...

Re: Rear lights - 1953 New Major
As a matter of interest where did you get the chain for the link arms ? So much nicer than the bit of rope more commonly used to keep the arms from moving too much.

Re: Wiring Route
When I rewired my 1957 Major I did a bit of research and it seemed to me that the feeds to the dynamo should run under the battery tray and down the side of the engine on the injector pump side. There should be a couple of cable clips there. There should also be a a couple of cable clips under the b...

Re: Rocker Shaft Oil Seal
Tim Many thanks for the informative response. The seal on the steering box must be at least 28 years old but I did not replace it during the rebuild because it seemed OK with no sign of a leak. I guess that trying to remove the staking with the shaft in place might be a bit tricky. I think your tip a...

Re: Couple More Photos
No. I have got the quadrant bracket for the hydraulic control Ok but just have not got around to fitting it yet. Lots of other bits & pieces to paint up and put back on. Planning on doing the drawbar and the linkage next followed by the tin work in the Spring when the weather should be a bit warmer....

Rocker Shaft Oil Seal
The oil seal on the steering rocker shaft has decided to leak which is a bit frustrating because the steering box has been full of oil for about 12 months during the repaint/rebuild without the slightest sign of a leak but I expect it is because the shaft is being rotated again now the tractor is op...

Drove my old girl home the other day from the yard where I have been working on her-about 1 mile on public roads. All went well until I met a bus coming the other way as I was going up a hill. Needed to do a quick change down and a hill start but made it Ok! Couple of pictures below http://i787.phot...

Great Stuff
What year is your major ? I see that she has got the radiator shutters so I presume it is before April 1957 because I think that they were discontinued at that time.
Cheers

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Adrian. The question of what I will use her for is a very good one and one often asked by my understanding and long suffering wife " why are you spending so much time and money on a tractor for which we have no real use?" Well, the thing is the tractor is a part of our family history now. I bought o...

My major was built around 18-24 Jan 1957 according to the various casting codes. The serial number is Jan 1957 and it was first registered in March 1957.

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Hello Adrian I have posted some (not particulary clear) photos of the two bearings. I think that they are from different manufacturers but are of essentially the same design. My tractor is not a Power Major though. Hope to post some more pictures of her shortly Cheers laurie http://i787.photobucket....

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Hi Adrian Got the upper shaft bearing out Ok. Much easier when you are trying to get it to go the right way ! I used a large socket and a hammer and it came out with a few light taps. Just in case anyone follows this thread in the future , the large bearing sits against a machined face and taps out ...

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Adrian. Thanks for the speedy response but I am a bit confused now (easily done). I have got the large bearing out OK by a bit of a tap from the inside of the gearbox casing because it fits up against a machined face. Bit like yours it seems to be in perfect condition and so should prove to be a use...

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Hi Adrian I have got the large transmisson gear and the upper shaft out OK. Thanks for the tip. However before I get too heavy handed do both the bearings just drive out of the gearbox casing and am I right in assuming that it is done from the outside rather than the inside of the casing ? Cheers La...

Re: Back on Her Own Feet
Thanks for the kind comments. I hope to have her back on my own drive before too long as I have been using the yard of a pal of mine and it will be nice to get her back home. I will try to take some more pictures of her then. Still got a bit to do with the tin work etc but this is all in pretty good...

Back on Her Own Feet
At last , after was seems to have taken ages, I have got my old girl (No 1415835) back on her own wheels and running.Engine started up today after about 18 months with no trouble at all. Still got to connect the steering drag link and sort out the oil gauge pressure pipe which follows a rather stran...

Re: Removing large transmission gear

I was a bit concerned that the weight might bring the whole thing down because it certainly creaked a bit under t...

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Thanks Adrian
I will give that a try and report back in due course. I was a bit reluctant to use a hammer in view of what it said in the manual but as always it is the engineers best tool !
Cheers

Re: Removing large transmission gear
Yes thats the one. Removing the primary gearbox as a unit takes out most of the gears and the transmission brake but leaves the upper shaft and the large transmission gear.
