Re: Fordson Power Major diesel oil filter change

I have a really early petrol major (1952) with AC oil filter. I was expecting a 135 mm cartridge when I pulled the housing off, but found a 115 mm one. This is the spring and 'washer'... https://i.postimg.cc/25yGqnSn/AC-oil-filter.jpg Has it been modified to take newer (115 mm) cartridge? ... or sho...

Re: Petrol major top end

Hi Old52. This is a current thread (not couple of years ago). The petrol Major I am working on is December '52 model, BUT the motor has serial number for Jan '55. The '55 motor has small front pulleys (they were reduced late '54) and I've just read [ 'Ford & Fordson Tractors - The Golden Years (1917...

Re: Enfo jack

Hi Mathias, yep, if you can get one it is worth having in the collection/toolbox - very usable. I bought the second on a NZ auction site for equivalent of 12 euro (but had to add 24 euro for freight  ). If you look closely in the left hand side of the photo is a later version. Not as good as t...

Re: Petrol major top end

Hi Mathias,
yep, I figured that it was probably because no-one knew the answer. Do you know the total production numbers of petrol vs. TVO vs. diesel? Are they in Condie's book?

Re: Petrol major top end

85 views but no replies eh. Parts have arrived and (assuming they are the correct ones) I can now tell you that diesel inlet & exhaust valves are same head and shaft diameter as the respective petrol valves, BUT 35 mm longer. My old-school engine reconditioner chap doesn't seem too phased, bl...

Enfo jack

What is better than an original Enfo jack? Two Enfo jacks! :D Seriously good jacks, stable with high reach, no sagging, no leaks. Havn't seen anything that compares. I liked the first one so much I hunted out a second. The one on the left is clearly E27N blue, that on the right Empire blue. Were the...

Petrol major top end

Hi all, following my 'Timing & tappets' topic... I've pulled the head and taken to my engine reconditioner man. He has said get 8 new springs, valve guides & 4 new exhaust valves. I've got various original parts books and two factory manuals. They are pretty comprehensive on the diesel motor, but de...

Re: Timing and tappets topic

An update: No 4 inlet valve was stuck open, that was why push rod fell out. I've taken head off for degunk, to check valves, and to replace cracked exhaust manifold. Head should be stamped with a warning "Do not carry upside down across grass or you will lose rotator caps" - damnit! Found one, but o...

Re: Timing and tappets topic

Hi Pavel, I'm halfway through a Dexta rebuild (... and the Wolseley needs engine removal, AJS the wheels rebuilt, house needs woodwork painted, winter firewood to cut, weeds in the garden growing like topsy, new shed to build...), so was hoping the workhorse would just keep plodding on a little long...

Timing and tappets topic

Hi all, Did some ignition work on the 1952 petrol major (new points and condensor). I can't find any pointer or obvious notch on the front pulley so not sure how to time it?? It did start and run (unevenly) though... Investigating the uneven firing: start at back... 1. Great spark No.4 2. No compres...

Re: petrol/diesel nose cone

Thanks Mervyn.
I have bits of 3 that I sent to panel beater to turn into one (I think he has forgotten me). I'm looking at another (No. 4), poor on-line auction photos of course :( , that maybe only needs 'the bash' and not the complete reconstruction!
Wish me luck...

Removal of lower link pins

Hi All, any tips on removing a badly rusted lower link pin. The trumpet is off and nut/washer removed on inside. I've tried some heat but not sure how far to push the heating thing. Looking at the new replacement pin, there is a big surface (capable of binding) on those two cones. Larger hammer? :? ...

Re: Please gather round and help assess my new Super Dexta

Welcome aboard DextaSuper. So many questions still unanswered... In Part 4 the lilac thing is just back pivot point of diff lock. In Part 3 - don't worry about filling the yellow circled holes. Yes, original toggle brake lever mounts here, but you should easily be able get replacement handbrake bits...

Hi Bernie,
just remember those linings are likely to be good old-fashioned asbestos.
The world won't stop, but do try to avoid inhaling any dust you make when doing the grinding thing.

John (& yup, I've had OSH responsibilities in a past life).

Re: Draft and Position adjustment.

I don't have the same parts listing you have, and my top cover is partially dismantled so sorry, I can't take photos... but when you flick between position control & qualitrol, the position control cam also moves 90 degrees. You can see how it looks in Figs 6 to 9 in Section 8 - Hydraulic Power Lift...

Re: Draft and Position adjustment.

Hi Mervyn, only guessing, but if the lever moves the internal bits to the right place (can you feel it doing the 'work' ?), then it won't matter if it sags afterwards. Perhaps slop/wear in the linkages? Mine certainly has some.

Re: Super dexta back end

Hi Rob,
thanks for the offer of a spring.
It is the short spring, and I have got one that I think will do the job (I don't think I killed it with the gas torch) from my old top cover assembly. I'll message you if it doesn't work.

Did you spot the 10 to 14 spline adapter in my photo above?

Re: Super dexta back end

The story so far: I've been buying stuff off a parts tractor for my 1960 dexta bit by bit by bit. Steering box, swinging drawbar, handbrake, dash & loom, top cover... Finally decided to buy everything remaining from the gearbox back (which I probably should have done in the first place). Super Dexta...

Hi Sam,

Sorry I can't help with size, but get a set of digital verniers (an oxymoron for sure) and a set of these:

Make sure they have metric and tpi sizes. You'll never regret it!

Re: Super dexta back end

I bought the super d. back end. It's currently sitting at my father-in-laws, but I should have it in a week. In the meantime I'm working on top cover. The old one was terribly worn (everywhere). Couldn't separate any of yoke, draft control plunger, clevis pin or draft control link even with heat. Th...
