Re: Starter grounding
Although winter is coming I stole the battery from our plow truck. It too had a low voltage. I did not try to start the truck(Dodge with 6cyl Cummins) instead took the time to clean up and charge battery. Both batteries had one cell with .6 volts and hydrometer reading 50% while other cells showed 7...

Re: Recovering old batteries
Sandy did you ever get "positive" results here? I was thinking of having a go at this. Turns out the battery I had in Hyacinth has one bad cell that only has .6 volts. The other cells all have 2.1 volts. For what its worth Hyacinth is negative ground with an alternator. This is a group 31 battery. A...

Re: Starter grounding
My memory, or lack of has caused some trouble. When Hyacinth failed to start, I checked voltage and it was 12.5. I then tried a start and it dropped to 3 volts! I pulled the battery and one cell was very low. I topped it off with battery electrolyte and slowly charged it up. It was a few days before...

Re: Starter grounding
Spent some more time with the starter. I used some plastic pieces and tire tube pieces to insulate any questionable points.Confident the plastic insulator for the positive post on cover is good.(set up as negative ground here). Tried again on jumpers off running truck. Got a slow spin along with "le...

Re: Starter grounding
Brian posted this ages ago, it might be the case, but I suspect it's probably the insulation for one of the insulated brushes. Try it with the offending brush off the commutator and see if it's any better, I would suspect if the insulation has failed the current was all missing the armature and lea...

Re: Starter grounding
I don't know who to attribute this to, but could apply in your case... Positive ground depends upon proper circuit functioning, the transmission of negative ions by retention of the visible spectral manifestation known as "smoke". Smoke is the thing that makes electrical circuits work; we kn...

Re: Starter grounding
I put it back together but no luck. I had it on board and jumped it from a running truck. Sparks and looking close the armature was barely turning. Everything is free on the pinion side so I fear there is an electrical problem beyond my knowledge. I did make sure the wires for the field coil brushes...

Starter grounding
Hyacinth had not been started in a month or so, and when a start was attempted there was nothing but a solenoid click. Battery and solenoid good. Jumped spare 8n starter to rule out solenoid. Direct jumped the Fordson starter off running tractor and also on running truck with no spin. Took starter a...

Re: Brake cable question
Could it be possible that the grease in the cable is too thick in colder temp causing slow retraction?
I ask due to the initial brake adjustments seemed to be doing fine until this colder weather.

Re: Brake cable question
I cleaned things up, polished and lightly greased moving parts. Seems to return better but I'm not 100% confident. Maybe I need to get new brake parts. I wish I took some pictures but didn't want to bring ipad out in the rain. Hope to get a test run in tomorrow. [url=https://postimages.org/] https:/...

Re: Brake cable question
Maybe coincidence but had to mention I had just greased outer bearing of bull pinion before noticing this noise. I had also moved a very short distance with the brake pedal latch engaged. Edit: jacked wheel up and kept finding binding point. Definitely in brake/drum. Took wheel off (loaded=heavy!) C...

Re: Brake cable question
I'm afraid I may have to revisit the brake issue. After fixing the control lever o-ring I wanted to take a quick firewood run but heard a "thump" and could feel it in the brake cover. Think I will have to take wheel off again and dig in.
If anyone has any other suggestions I'm all ears .

Re: '55 Control valve lever o-ring
I have not been able to do anything other than idle Hyacinth and cycle the lift up and down a few times, but so far the o-ring change looks successful. The old o-ring had a break for sure. I must admit that I couldn't find gasket paper or even a tube of gasket maker here at home. I gambled on a cere...

Re: Toolbox mounting
Well I got it shimmed up and made sure to test the 180F thermostat in a pan on the stove. I started to open just over 180F and was fully opened at 190F. So installed in order shim, 'stat, gasket, and housing. Sorry Sandy no pics-cold killed phone pretty quick. The surfaces were in good shape in my o...

Re: Toolbox mounting
Interesting,mI've been second guessing the order they are supposed to be in and thinking I may have been wrong.
I will get a picture, but unless anyone thinks I should not run her, I'd like to run some more firewood out.

Re: Toolbox mounting
Sandy here is a picture of one, but the one in it is identical. I took one from an old Ford truck engine, and it looks the same as well. I think I was installing thermostat in wrong order. I was putting the 'stat in the head, then the gasket, then the connection. Parts book shows gasket first, then ...

Re: Toolbox mounting
New development: the thermostat that was in it, nor the one I had for a Cummins protrude above the cylinder head as shown in repair manual. Now I understand Sandy why you indicated the AC TC3 . I'm assuming it has a thicker flange. I've found some crosses to some domestic cars so hopefully I can get...

Re: Toolbox mounting
I did get our Ford 2120 (Shibaura) out in the cold to feed the cows a round bale and try to smooth out the frozen hoof marks in the mud that froze overnight. Phil, the 2120, is handy with a loader and small backhoe, but not as enjoyable to me as Hyacinth! Phil has a new battery and started up ok aft...

Re: Toolbox mounting
Thanks Sandy. I happen to have found a 180 that was here. It's new and a spare for a Cummins 4bta, but from what I can tell it has same dimensions to work for Hyacinth. I will clean exhaust up and see if there's any difference. I did get some firewood in, but there's plenty more to get, I'm far behi...

Re: Toolbox mounting
I must have a 160*F thermostat in Hyacinth. I will replace with 180. Unless advised otherwise I will do another trailer load or two of firewood before replacing thermostat as I am behind on firewood and cold temps are on the way. Will be interesting to see if this helps with the slobber at exhaust. ...

Re: Toolbox mounting
I'll check temp with laser temp, but I think I did in the past and found them close to the same. There is a thermostat but I cannot remember if I used the old one or replaced with new. Is there a "shroud" on the correct thermostat or will any normal one work? I may be thinking of another engine alto...

Re: Toolbox mounting
In the picture of the toolbox you can see the slobber at the exhaust elbow. I know working Hyacinth hard will clear it up, but how bad is it to do lighter work with her? Examples are pulling a small trailer through the woods gathering firewood, or skidding out firewood. Neither of these seems to cle...

Hyacinth finally has a toolbox. Only cordless drill we have did well!
Sandy thanks for the link to the fender thread. One of these days Hyacinth will get a set.
