Thanks. After asking around I believe it is a Perkins 540 with FORD embossed on the rocker covers. I cant see the bellhousing as it is part of a corn dryer so has a reduction box at the back hiding it. I will try and take some piccies of it over the weekend. I'm off to Blandford for the day tomorrow...

Possible V8 project
Hi, I have been offered a Ford V8 engine from a Ford Cargo Lorry. I dont know what year or size it is. It is non turbo and comes with flywheel , starter and radiator. How can I tell the size or age? Has anyone fitted anything like it and if so what sort of job is it? I have restored 2 majors already...

Hi, One of the bolts that holds the front deisel tank bracket to the top of the gearbox has an extended head (left hand side sat on tractor). This has a hole up through it's shaft with two holes on opposite spanner faces. This, I believe, is the gearbox breather. Mine dropped oil out of the bellhous...

Hi Nick, thanks for the comments. The farmer who I bought it off couldn't find the old V5 or any old tax discs (because all farmers tax their tractors, right!) so I went to Thomas Andrews aswell. He found that the old number was a Surrey number and that all their records were destroyed. I had to set...

I think the 'S' is for service engine. I think they were used in other machinery like combine harvesters such as the Class Senetor. I would say your Super Major has had a heart transplant at some point. The back end is a Super but the top cover looks like an earlier diesel or power major. I could be...

Hi, I had a similar problem, my Super wouldn't lift. In the end I found that the Unload valve was stuck. It is a small valve next to the control valve. it is behind a plug that needs to be pulled out. I screwed in a bolt and pulled it that way. Then you need to push the valve out and clean it. If yo...

Hi, I dont know the layout of this engine but I have seen a solution on another engine that might help. He made a blanking plate where the filter housing bolts on with hydraulic hose fittings welded to it, then hydraulic pipes away to somewhere where the filter housing will fit above the side rails....

Thanks for the comments. I am very pleased with the outcome. I restored a 1958 Power Major before this one but that was only really cosmetic as it was still working on a friends farm. I learnt a lot by just tinkering and asking questions of freinds and colleagues. I have put on 30" rims from a Fords...

My efforts
Hi guys, I joined recently and have already gleaned some great info from this forum. I have now figured out the photo posting bit so I thought I'd show my efforts. http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/7328/photo0036so.jpg This is how I found my 1962 Super. it has been stood here for about 18 years. http...

Ok Brian, thanks. I dont remember seeing any marks on the unload valve ball (but was I looking that hard?). I do remember the control valve being discoloured. This tractor had stood for 18 years before I rescued it. there was quite a bit of water in the bottom of the back end and the unload valve wa...

Brian, thanks for your help. I timed the bounces and it is anywhere between 15-25 per 30 seconds depending on where in the quadrant you have the lever. I pulled out the aux service knob and the drop stopped. Since I have already resealed the unload valve it would point to the control valve. Thanks a...

Thanks guys. I have fitted a new starter (ouch!) and it seems to have cured the problem. Your next challenge........... My hydraulics lift and lower fine, nice and smooth but when they are up in the position control they 'bounce' and when they are in draft control they fall. I have replaced the main...
