Re: An engine without thermostat gets worn rapidly.

Shrouded stats are hard to find but new old stock AC ones turn up on ebay. As stated they block off the bypass port. In the UK unless working hard on a hot day you're unlikely to notice any issues if you cant find a shrouded one but it's worth making the effort to have it right. Running with no stat...

Re: PTO work with a non-NP PTO

Just to be devil's advocate on this one, we've run majors for 1000s of hrs and have not knowingly encountered any breakages in the pto driveline. We've run NH 268 and 276 balers, drum and disc mowers, rotavators and all kinds of pto powered equipment without any bother. Equally we have been breaking...

I am looking for camshaft gears with the three bolt style used in the early model Fordsons. The part number is E1ADKN-6256-B
We may have some here. Where are you located, UK or further afield?

I think this style of wheel was used in between the aluminium and more common bakelite type. We have a couple of diesel majors which have had this type fitted.

Re: Three point linkage stuck up.

I use a couple of guide rods (easy to make by cutting head off some bolts) this helps with removal and refitting to keep things square. Don't lose the split collets off the feed pipe, a lot of people don't realise they exist until after refitting they can't raise any pressure. There is an O ring on ...

Re: New performance major questions

You do see some majors on the continent fitted with mechanical governed injector pumps, these were optional before the minimec started being fitted around April 62 I had always had the impression the minimec appeared on 4 and 6 cyl lorry, industrial and tractor in April 62, I think many industrial e...

Re: New performance major questions

The gearing is done in the transfer box. The casing is machined to suit different gear sets. The same was done for the 6/4 ploughmaster which had 38" rear wheels and again two possible diff ratios. The np roadless conversions had the mk2 transfer box with lower output shaft to make prop angle better...

Re: New performance major questions

According to Stuart there were 25 prototypes. The one I have 599phk was registered to the Ford motor company in May 1959. The back end casting is dated late 58 or early 59 I can't quite remember off hand. It has disc brakes fitted. The top cover is super major but devoid of any casting marks. Simila...

Re: New performance major questions

The casting date on the block is August 1960 I believe. It doesn't have the casting detail for the small glass sediment bowl located close to the join with the sump but instead a neat folded bracket to position the bowl in the correct place. I've not really studied the injector pump mounting detail,...

Re: New performance major questions

The prototype super major is the same as a blue orange super in terms of ratios (and also power/diesel major come to that). It has the diff lock, disc brakes and hydraulic top cover per a super major. Engine wise it has a minimec pump fitted so was most likely used to test out the mechanical injecti...

Re: New performance major questions

We operate a number of majors on hay and now not so much with straw. The NP with 3.5 diff is generally in 4th gear for most of the work we do, baling 3rd and 4th with correctly sized swathes. The low diff NP is not suited to this work, too low geared. I suspect the lower gearing was aimed at higher ...

Re: New performance major questions

I think the 3.5 diff was more common than you think, yes a early np all seem to be the low diff but by late 63 the tables seem to have turned in favour of the 3.5. Regards, Ed First things first, if the gearbox oil level is down due to the gearbox output shaft seal and/or the double lipped oil seal ...

Re: Fordson Selene

The NP raised PTO has a cover with four holes only and it's not round, this one is 1:1. The earlier raised PTO has a round cover with 8 holes (only 4 bolts) and it's round, this one is 1.33:1. I don't know which one you need, but you can tell from the PTO casting under the gearbox, if it's very big...

Re: 1953 Major E1ADKN Hand Crank Starter

I have seen plain head bolts fitted usually when an industrial engine has been fitted or a front driven hydraulic pump added etc.
We have early and late bolts with the starting dog. I think we may still have a handle or two available also.
Thanks.

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

Sorry for the slow reply, yes my experience is that the NP pto unit definitely gives trouble. We do sell quite a few used parts for majors and there is definitely a demand for NP units which have been broken. In fact I can't recall anyone asking for an earlier type unit to replace a broken one where...

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

Sorry don't get on here very often. Yes I was pretty sure the A and B referred to double or single lipped seals with the singles to be used in pairs. I assumed due to supply chain issues the singles were made available but it could be they were seen as more durable. I think we've examples of both ki...

Re: FSM gear box double lipped seal installation

I'm pretty sure there is the option of fitting either a double lipped seal or 2 single lipped seals back to back on earlier tractors in the pto drop box. On the np I think only a double lipped was available and it is a different size to earlier e1a tractors. The only successful way to change the sea...
