Re: Parting 1959 Power Major

Dave, Yeah, we knew that when we started. The idea WAS to use it, but I've been overseas more than here and no longer have a partner (she's on her third guy from me and somewhere in the south Pacific). Point is, we knew this when we started, but it would have cost us what the tractor cost just to ha...

Re: Parting 1959 Power Major

Sorry guys, edited to include that the tractor is in Boulder, Colorado

When we were looking, this rusted, worn-out, dirt encrusted POS cost us almost $2,000!!!

Parting 1959 Power Major

Complete/Restored/Running Power Major I can't sell for half what I have into it in parts. When we were looking for a running diesel tractor anywhere near this size, they were $5,000 and up. So..., have to move it and hate to sell it to a recycler for the weight in cast iron..., so..., who wants what...

Re: Starter Motor Switch, NEW (off new starter for 1959 FPM)

Hi Colobio If you Have a paypal account and would ship U.S.Postal.Service to Canada I would be interested in making a donation for the bendix :) , The last super I got has the teeth chewed badly and I had to replace the flywheel to  I would like to keep my spare starter for emergency use on th...

Re: Starter Motor Switch, NEW (off new starter for 1959 FPM)

BTW, I also have the old starter. The armature is blown to pieces, but the casing and the front with the bendix are fine if anyone wants those. Offer a few bucks and pay for shipping...

Starter Motor Switch, NEW (off new starter for 1959 FPM)

Since I had modified a Mercedes reverse light switch for a bendix switch on our old FPM starter, I wanted to just keep that, so the new starter we bought from Agriline (arrived in two-days from England - brand new and lovely, works like a charm) came with a new switch and bracket. Since I had to fab...

Blew up our PM starter...

Well, the saga continues, we got the hydraulics back together with new seals, adjusted the plow, drove it to the field and ran out of fuel 5' into the first plow. Hooked an electric fuel pump up to it and purged, when we tried to restart, the armature on the starter "blew up." The chunks that were t...

Re: '59 PM little downward pressure on lift arms?

Wow! THanks a million everyone. I have the hydraulics apart now and it's very obvious that the lift arms only lift, nothing to exert downward pressure. At least I can replace all the seals and O-rings to solve the multiple leaks. Plow not heavy enough, ground like concrete, probably mal-adjustment o...

'59 PM little downward pressure on lift arms?

We're trying to plow now with the "new" PM and the 3-pt lift arms will lift, and go down, but will not exert enough pressure to cut into the ground with a new plow. It should have enough downward force to lift the tractor, but it sounds like it's bypassing somewhere. Anyone have a schematic of these...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Oh, OK. IIRC, my fuel filter has a LOT of different things in it, including a felt seal washer at the bottom. I'll take it apart and photo'g for you next day or so.

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

That looks like the fuel filter housing to me? My fuel filter looks like that, but the oil filter housing mounts directly to the block with the oil in/out through a gasket to the block.

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Running issues: Trying to deal with the hard-start issues and non-running until it gets really warm on starting fluid. Timing is worthless. Nothing on the pump drive that is a timing mark, so lining up the flywheel marks then looking at the pump, the marker doesn't correspond with anything on the dr...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Robert, Thanks a mill for the NH parts lookup idea. I checked out the parts, of course not stocked, so I machined my own seal holder, used a $0.69 spring from the local hardware, then an O-ring to seal any seepage around shaft and a washer to back that O-ring up in the groove I machined in the seal ...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Robert, Thanks for the commiseration, no need to apologies on the dog comment. It's what it is, at least in my book anyway. Worked the engine enough to get the oil hot to change and the oil filter has me worried. I have a new one, but there's no way for it to "seal" in the screw-in housing? I think ...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Robert, Thanks so much for the opinion and advice, well-heeded. The tractor ran (drove it off the flatbed and around the yard when we first bought it) and everything worked, but then we had to use ether. When I have a car come in that needs it and doesn't smoke like a chimney, it was usually glow-pl...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Another question for those knowledgeable about these..., the thing won't idle at low, it just shuts down, even if I open it back up before it's totally dead. And..., it runs smooth with no smoke, but just will not start without starting fluid? Ideas?

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Got the beast running, but leaks popping up all over. The drive for the IP is leaking engine oil, the rear main is leaking a lot (engine oil coming out of clutch housing hole), clutch doesn't engage till it's almost all the way out (adjustment, but probably more a thin clutch), and PTO runs all the ...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Question: Anyone tell me how the hell do I get the front (only) hub caps off? I've tried spinning with a large spanner (no movement without deforming the caps), I've tried prying off as you would about any other wheel bearing cap, no go, no movement, stuck tight as hell. Are they threaded on or some...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Robert, Thanks for all the advice! I'll try the hydraulic press for the fender before we do the second coat and LYK how that works out for me. As far as the Major, I might do it for the engine parts and such. Might be worth it for that. The two stage on my PM has a stuck PTO clutch. Probably need to...

Re: Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Since this is a "working resto," I'm resisting the urge to make everything perfect (including straightening out the rear fender - I tried, but would cause more damage trying to bang that one out than leaving it). I am banging out the front and the hood. Might try again at the rear fender before the ...

Greetings mates!! We've decided to paint it a color we matched that Rust-Oleum makes. Got a few quarts to test spray this weekend. Finished the steering box rebuild, chased leaks, more degreasing and a bit of priming. Here's what the steering gear looked like when I had it apart: http://www.colorado...

Opinions on colors..., working resto...

Greetings to all!! New Fordson Power major owner here. Put an ad up for a cheap, non-working diesel tractor as we needed one, but didn't want to fork out what most are asking for a running one and since I do custom mods on Mercedes diesels and have worked on race engines and what not for 30 years, I...
