Re: 3 Breather Pipes?
Dear Tractorbob 3 I have a September 1961 Super Major. It has a vertical stubby pipe coming out of the top of the rocker cover and this is connected via a short length of hose to a cranked pipe, which goes through a hole in the firewall to connect to a stubby pipe going into the top section (inlet) ...

Re: Fordson Super Major Serial Number
Dear Werries The casting code L28F on your transmission housing indicates it was cast on 28 September 1961. The tractor was probably assembled in the following month. To see whether the tractor is an original, or a "bitsa" look for this code on other major assemblies, such as the engine block, rear ...

Re: Super Major np Hydraulic lift arms
Good evening Worn lower link arm ends is a very common problem, which usually leads to the balls at the implement end being lost because they just fall out. Also, you find someone has beaten the end of the arm and flattened the protusion that takes the special spring clip that holds the keep plate i...

Re: Thrust washer on lift cross-shaft.
I just thought I would throw my "sixpennorth worth" into this interesting case of the errant thrust washer. I have an original Fordson Dexta Tractor Parts List (1957/64) Reprinted May 1964 Supplement No4. The Hydraulic Power Lift illustration shows the Arm (HPL ram to cylinder) Part No 957E 545B. It...

Dear Deutz514 The front of the headlamps should not come more than 0.25 to 0.50 inch through the grilles, if you have the the proper (post 11/60) shallow headlamps, set up with the correct mounting brackets. It can look a little odd, because the grilles are at slight angles and the headlamps look st...

If you put the High/Low lever into neutral (between the upper and lower positions), the pump driven off the pulley drive (by your right foot) will be disengaged.

Re: DVLA Problems
Dear Wullie The closure of the 39 or so Local DVLA offices starting in 2013 was supposedly as a result of a DVLA consultation (who was exactly consulted one wonders?) which came up with the answer that "customers wanted on-line communication with DVLA", rather than going to speak to a real person at...

Re: Rev Counter Drive Gearbox Power/Super Major
I have got a bit further with trying to sort out the "crappern" Rev Counter Drive. I finally got hold of the dealer who sold me the part and he said that some gearboxes were not well made (yeh really?) and the solution was to cut about 10mm off the threaded end of the gearbox output, to allow the ca...

Rev Counter Drive Gearbox Power/Super Major
Known in the Parts List as Gear (Tachometer) Assy, Part no E1ADKN - 17373C, the listing for tractors is quite confusing. Even more so is trying to obtain an original pattern drive gearbox (the one that is driven off the FIP drive shaft on Majors with rev counter up under the steering wheel and up to...

Re: 5" headlamp replacement
Ian asked whether his "through the grille" type headlights were the same as those for earlier "side of the nosecone" headlights. The answer is that they are not. The later grille mounted headlights are much shallower than the side mounted jobbies, so the reflector, headlight shell, contact assembly,...

Dear Charlie I have used the POR 15 sealer on a couple of motorcycle tanks, also fuel tanks on a Super Major, a Dexta, a diesel "grey menace" (TEF20) and on an E27N Major TVO, all with great success every time. Some were for slight leaks and weeps, others for paper thin bases caused by water (rust) ...

Hello Alex It is called the PTO Shifter Shaft Oil Seal, the Fordson Part No is E27N 7262-A. Dunlop Tractor Spares are pretty good for posting things on. They have it listed as Seal Major PTO Selector Shaft, their Part No ME150081. They are located near Ballymena, Co Antrim, N Ireland. Tel No 028 256...

Re: Military Fordsons / Dexta
Hail MOD Dexta I am not aware of Fordson Dextas being on general issue to the Army during that period. The make of tractor around at that time for those units that required a tractor was made by the opposition (MF). These were usually industrial versions. The RAF and Royal Navy tended to do their ow...

Re: Bonnet Centre Hinge Rubber Strip
Hi All The probable replacement is felt to be a simple, sealed sponge rubber weatherstrip of rectangular section. One presumes that Fordson would not be looking for a special profile (and therefore expensive) seal for the sole purpose of keeping dirt and damp out of the bonnet hinge aperture on a ma...

Re: Bonnet Centre Hinge Rubber Strip
Good stuff Pat Yep, your final offering is looking similar to my 55 year old brittle remains (seal I mean). It appears that it has a soft crushable centre, surrounded by conventional rubber. Mine is compressed on one side, which I presume is due to the fact that the right hand side bonnet half is op...

Bonnet Centre Hinge Rubber Strip
Running down the gap between the two bonnet halves is a rubber strip (seal) that was fitted (presumably) to keep water etc from getting into the hinge. I just have a couple of short lengths (about 1 inch) of perished bits of rubber stuck in my Super Major's bonnet. These are too far gone to recognis...

Dear Ian An interesting question, which raises an anomaly between the Repair Manual and the Parts List. My Parts Lists for Dexta and Super Dexta details 3 x Pad (Tank Fuel Support) Part No E1ADDN 9066 for tractors up to Apr/1962. From 4/62 it lists 1 x E1ADDN 9066 Pad (Fuel Tank Support) -Rear and 2...

Dear POPEYE According to my Repair Manual the Power Major should have a common guide used for both inlet and exhaust. Inlet should protrude by 0.85in (21.59mm) measured from where it comes through the head. Exhaust should protrude by 1.10in (27.94mm). Page 7, Section 1, Major, Power Major, Super Maj...

Dear Matt This could be quite a saga. I had similar problems with my 1947 E27N, although it was fitted with the earlier vaporisor and float chamber. I had the same symptoms and each time I found something "wrong", it would improve, but would still not rev cleanly. This was the sequence I ended up go...

Dear Kirbust Sadly, these screws (not bolts, as the thread goes all the way to the head) are not listed in my Parts List, or I am not able to find them in the parts list. Going back to the the rocker cover gasket moving, I can suggest a good solution that we used for years on BMC A and B series engine rocker covers that suffered from the same problem (and of course Dextas). I use it on all engines that have a relatively thick cork-type gasket that tends to slip out a...
