Re: Rarity of optional equipment on Majors
I would go along with Brian's comments. The only Majors I saw with pick-up hitches were those used by contractors for lime, or slag spreading. They towed the wheeled spreader, behind a large wheeled ramp on the road between jobs. The ramp was used by the lorries delivering the lime to the farm to ba...

Re: Hydrolics
Dear Darryl Unless you take the top hydraulic cover off the rear transmission, it is not really that easy to efficiently "rinse", or clean out the rear transmission casing effectively. There are a number of places in the bottom of the rear transmission case that it is impossible to really get to, un...

Re: Bonnet holder clip
Dear Dan Tricky one. There should be a support rod clip attached to a clip retainer, which is secured to the bonnet by a couple of rivets. The rivets are 5/32in x 1/4in round head. The only source I found for the clip and retainer was off an old bonnet. ..........well it actually took me 3 old bonne...

Dear Kav
According to my parts list, the bigger trunnion pin and heavier front axle came in at the introduction of the Super Major in Oct 1960, which should be at Serial No 1575886.

Good Day As you have a Power Major with a pneumatic governor Fuel Injection Pump (Not the later Minimec with Mechanical Governor FIP) your rev counter should be a "clockwise" one. There are two makes of rev counter fitted to Fordson Majors, Power Majors and early Super Majors (exceptions are some ex...

Super Major Crown Wheel Bolts Loose/Sheared
I have just removed the hydraulic unit from my recently acquired 1961 Super Major to investigate why it will not lift in Position Control. The ancient oil took ages to drain out through the clogged gauze basket filter in the base of the unit, so I started to clean out the years of muck and crud that...

Dear Agroman According to my parts list, there are 2 different air cleaners. One made by Burgess, the other by AC. I think the AC type was for early Dextas and the Burgess type was for Super Dextas. Presumably, yours parts supplier has failed to realise this. Sadly, a lot of new parts are poor patte...

Dear Matthias My Super Major has K31F and K28F casting codes and its (original) engine no is 1616419. It was made at Dagenham in September 1961. It was exported to Holland, with 38 inch rear wheels, a radiator blind, a km per hour rev counter (made by a French company called "OS", rather than AC or ...

Dear Skidz Go to the Fordson Dexta site from here. Search on "Registration No" and go through the posts 'til you get to the one about tractor reg no VAX 80. There are posts on there which will point you in the best direction, which is the excellent service provided by Patrick Pawsey of the Ford and ...

Simple answer. If you ran the system out of fuel, then you will need to bleed it to get it started.

Re: Combustion chamber covers
Dear Oldcharlie The combustion chamber covers are in fact pre-combustion chamber caps, as this is an indirect injection diesel engine and the pre-combustion chambers assist in efficient burning of the fuel mix. The covers, or caps are probably there to allow machining operations to take place to for...

Dear Paudie Hmmm, there is always confusion, when people use different (and sometimes inaccurate) terms for things. I am always amused when people refer to "dampers" on a vehicle's suspension system as "shock absorbers". The spring is the shock absorber, the thing that stops it going into resonance ...

Super Major Air Hose. Filter to Inlet Manifold
I bought an air hose from my local agricultural engineers who are agents for Sparex. Guess what, the hose would not stretch over the inlet manifold end, although it fitted over the air filter outlet. Two phone calls to Sparex, Exeter and another new air hose ordered, as they said they would provide ...

Hi I looked through my genuine Repair Manual thinking I had seen a diagram for a petrol one, but no. (I was obviously thinking about my B414 Manuals which cover their petrol/gas version). The only place I would have thought where there are petrol specific differences would be in the Users, or Owners...

What incredible luck, I think that would have made me smile in relief and possibly disbelief. You need to clear out the water galleries in your cylinder block, going by the sludge and debris you have there.

Dear Niall Presumably you have steering shake, as the wheels oscillate from side to side at certain speeds. Dear Tjibbe So you have the early type oil pump screen. I haven't come across one, so I am going by the repair manual. Re: Forson Major Oil Pump
Dear Tjibbe Replace oil pump? It depends on why you took the sump off in the first place. Was it because your oil pressure was low, the bearings were knocking, or oil pressure dropped drastically when the engine was hot? Have you taken off a big end bearing or a main brg to see what state the shell ...
