Re: Jack - My Fordson Major Tractor
Been out for a drive today on Jack, actually to fetch a topper back from a neighbouring village and I really think the run has done the engine good, he’s been putting quite a bit of oily smoke out recently but after the 13-mile trip and later in the afternoon rolling a friend field, he really seems ...

Re: Jack - My Fordson Major Tractor
Well I’ve still got the pump drive oil seal to do and of course it’s getting worse. I’m going to tackle it soon but I’m a little concerned about disturbing the 2 vacumn pipes on the front of the pump, they look awful fragile. Any ideas anyone?

Re: Cylinder head bolts
Thanks Wayne. That gives me a bit more confidence as I was afraid of damaging the block. I've got a drill bit and I'll borrow a tap from work this week. Regards, David Dave, if you smear the tap with grease before you re-tap the thread then any swarf or debris that the tap cuts will stick in the gr...

I’m starting to think about a truck restoration. :yikes: Thinking that my dad was a Hillman / Commer dealer back in the sixty’s, I’d like to restore a Commer truck circa 1960-ish. Either a ridged or articulated vehicle, actually I’d love a ridged flat back or tipper. Ideally the truck engine...

Re: Jack - My Fordson Major Tractor
Well two weeks later, I’ve got the timing case back on jack complete with its new oil seal and he’s running a treat, a long time for a little job I know but my spare time is limited. My next oil leak to sort is the fuel pump drive shaft out of the rear of the timing case. I asked Agriline if ...

It’s raining, almost sleet and I’m up at the field pulling the damper off Jack's engine and the timing case cover to renew the front crankshaft oil seal. WHY? :scratchhead: The warmer weather of spring and early summers only a few months away… So why don’t I wait until then?... :eyes: …I’v...

Re: Hydraulic oil circuit
Yep a crank seal is easy, I’ve done many in my time but…
..The trouble I have working on Jack is he’s been used for boat launching in salt water so everything is rusted solid when it comes to any sort of job…
…if it’s not rusted solid then its just about rusted away

I got the log splitter hydraulics working a treat and Wendy was so impressed how it worked, :D she suggested I fetch the whole rig down to the cottage to split the stockpile of logs that we have… can’t have the FMD running outside though until I get the front crank seal sorted… Surpri...

Re: Registering a major with a slight problem
My Major has had a different engine number to the one that’s fitted yet it was registered on the original engine number which is what the Fordson’s used as a chassis / VIN number. I’d suggest you speak to Grace Popperwell Whiteoaks Legsby Market Rasen Lincolnshire LN8 3QN Tel: 01673 844990 she got m...

Re: Hydraulic oil circuit
I`m following this post with interest as a friend is making me a log splitter. My main concern is that the oil flow may not be fast enough and I`ll end up with a machine slower than me with an axe! Also will the splitter have to be taken off the 3 point linkage and be free standing during use as th...

So just a little side track here. what old JCB's did you work on 3c"s or early CX'S I used to buy/ repair/ sell and run 3C2/3s and my last one i used was a mk3 9sp syncro std front bucket/ forks and extenda hoe. Hi Robert, I don’t want to get too far off the thread but briefly I worked for the Shef...

Re: Hydraulic oil circuit
Thanks Robert, that’s exactly how we used to pipe the return circuit up for the old JCB’s. I don’t mind going directly into the filler rather than using a tee piece because it will only be occasionally that I need to top the backend up with oil… Thanks everyone, I’ll get it sorted and post a picture...

Re: Hydraulic oil circuit
Hi Those hydraulic fitting threads on the major are all British standard Pipe (B.S.P) so it should be pretty easy to get them. Don't no if gas fittings are the same or do they use something else Though :?: Regards Robert if the filler cap thread is a BSP thread, then I'm laughing, it will be so eas...

Re: Hydraulic oil circuit
It may be that the return will have to go through the filler cap after all. While I was tipping my load of Gas this morning I was looking at the exposed threads on the vapour line fittings and they look a similar size and thread pitch to my filler cap. :scratchhead: So I’ll be taking my filler cap ...

Well thinking I might have an in-compatible self-sealing coupling in the circuit I disconnected the pipe from this port and started Jack up… The engine only ran for a few seconds but it left me with a real mess of oil to clear up.nathanwhittaker wrote:Does that bung give out alot off pressure

Jack’s been an absolute “god send” this last 2-weeks with the bad weather  , transporting 100-litres of water at a time up to the field for the horses despite the oil and diesel leaks. thats exactly how i get my sumps back on with a ratchet strap at the front, and a trolley jack at the back. also keeping the gasket lined up is trickey, so now i stick it to the sump with silicone!
