Re: piston and bearing question

Hi Mike, I can't give you an answer regarding the sound of alloy pistons vs cast as all mine have alloy and they sound great to me. I can't say that I have heard any difference between my tractors and any other P6 unless I cane the living daylights out of it. I had the injection pump set up as a P6V...

Re: E27N's Rear Wheel Differences in Australia

By the way, what are those handle things for? Are they just to hold the wheel to put it on and off or is there another use for them? I believe my tractor was sold new local here in QLD near Toowoomba. Hi Chris, If you have ever had to change a tyre or tube on one of those wheels you will know what ...

Re: E27N's Rear Wheel Differences in Australia

Hi Chris, I have noticed a change in rim style on Victorian tractors too. Here the castings were made by Malcom Moore and the earlier rims had the flat flange like your picture shows and the later rims had the bosses for the bolts similar to yours. The other thing that changed in Victoria seems to b...

Re: Ferguson FE 35 Injection pump problem

Hi Frode, When I was a young lad our family owned a FE35 with a 23c engine. I can tell you we only ran out of fuel once, it was such a mongrel to get started again my father never left to go into the padock without a full tank of diesel again. Probably the only reason we owned two tractors at the ti...

Re: what is the correct oil for a Perkins P6 ?

Hi Carl, I am running a Penzoil HD 30 oil in my P6 as it can get rather warm over here in Australia, but my P6 manual says 30F to 80F SAE 20W or 20 and over 80F SAE 30. All the oils listed were detergent diesel oils so any diesel 15W 40 or 20W 50 for hotter temperatures would be OK. If it is an olde...

Re: Fordson Super Major 4x4 Roadless in Norway

Hi Andgjerd, That is a great tractor. It has a very interesting front axle with the extra strengthening on the lower half and a torque limiting clutch that is different from all the others I have seen or read about. Pat is 100% right about parts for the front axle, they are easy to get even in Austr...

Re: Propper way of starting.

Hi Buster. The starting procedure should be close to the E27N starting procedure. There is a copy on this site http://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/manuals/new_major_operators_guide.htm I don't know why it says new major, but if it is the same as my E27N manual you should find the starting procedure on...

Re: Main Bearing Adjustment

Hi Chris, Have you measured the clearance with a plastigauge/flexigauge to check the clearances, because I would not go too tight on the bearings. I do not have the bearing clearance specs for the E27N Petrol Kero engine but most engines need at least 1 to 2 thou clearance on the mains to give the o...

Re: Levelling Box

Hi, A few years back I had the same problem with the lift arms on my E27N. They had not moved since the 1960s. When I got the tractor back I was burning off a pile of rubbish on my few acres and I threw the arms into the fire until they glowed a dull red and then pulled them out. When they cooled do...

Re: Hello And a question.

Hi Kelvin, Welcome to the forum. Sorry to hear your E27N is not moving. The only thing I can think of is that the hand brake was left partly on and the plates overheated and welded themselves together. It almost happened to me once but I was lucky and noticed the engine was loaded a little more than...

Re: Ford 8000 engine knock

Hi Martijn, I had a Triumph 2500 many years ago that developed a rather loud knock. The cause was very surprising, a loose front pulley! Any movement on the crank shaft causes a big bang as it hits the key. A new pulley fixed it straight away. Might be worth a look as you have already checked all th...

Hi Chris, With the aussie dollar the way it is I would rather just buy them. Cotswold Vintage Tractors have them. http://www.cotswoldvintagetractors.com/fordson/home.php?cat=264&sort=orderby&sort_direction=0&page=2 They are not simple brackets by any means and at the price they are it would hardly b...

Hi Ollie. Have you tried the guys at John Bownes Ltd. http://www.roadless.co.uk/ The last time I spoke to Richard in parts they had a transfer box that was missing the input shaft for sale. That was some time ago now so it might be sold already. They have the drawings to get replacements for the mis...

Hi Wayne, The former owner of your tractor should be charged with extreme cruelty and torture of defenceless tractors :curse: It realy looks like it has been run for years without an oil change and what oil was there was probably mostly kero as well. Even from the photo I can spot at least 10 thou o...

Re: automatic major

That is a very interesting machine. Definately not a Roadless though. The transfer box looks far more like a Selene conversion to me because of the narrow width of the transfer box. Pat AKA Bear Creek Majors would be able to say for sure. The front axle is also not Roadless. Lucky it is too far away...

Re: water in oil

Hi Willy, Personally if I were you I would simply flush and change the oil first. If the tractor was sitting for any length of time you may just have a condensation problem. OK the chances are that you may still have a problem, but an oil change is a small price to pay to make sure that there is act...

Re: brake and clutch rods bent... but need to be??

Hi Rob,

The only thing that I can think of is that someone has mounted the foot plates lower than they should be making it impossible to have straight rods any more. I can't think of how it might have happened but it might be worth looking into.

Regards, Frank.

Hi John, If it was just a perkins L4 engine and none of the conversion bits to fit it to a tractor probably only scrap value. The L4 is not hard to find in good order. If on the other hand it was out of a Fordson tractor and had all of the bits to fit it to an E27N or E1A Major you could throw out t...

Hi Mike, The windage (baffle) plate may very well be available in the sump that comes off the engine if it has the oil pick up point toward the rear of the engine. If not it looks fairly easy to make out of sheet metal. The one in the Fordson sump is just a rounded bottom V shape plate with a hole t...

Re: Petrol engine rebuild parts

Hi Peter, How tight were the pistons on the rods when you assembled them? The rule of thumb that I was told for new gudgeon pins was that the piston should be firm enough to just hold it's own weight when leant over. If it flops about you need to fit new small end bushes. If they are loose I would g...

Re: Factory rebuilt engines

Hi Mike, I can't help much with most of the numbers but the casting code M 29 S is Oct 29 1951 which would be possible as an exchange engine in an E27N. The casting code L 8 K would be Sept 8 1947 if it were an E27N block, ie had the starter hole in the block casting. Unfortunately I have no casting...
