Re: Battery for Fordson Major

A '643' is relatively cheap to buy (for its size, compared to car-type batteries), fits a Major's battery-tray, and has enough oomph to start a 6-cylinder combine engine in summer, and a Major in a normal Scottish winter: https://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313.TR1.TR...

Re: Going ploughing

There are obviously lots of ploughing videos on YouTube, and this is one of the best I have seen - it's filmed by someone who is sowing [I would guess, wheat] with maybe a power-harrow/seed drill combination. It shows the frustration caused when your plough gets choked with weeds, or lumps of muck, ...

Re: Super Major Hi-Lo transmission won't shift.

It depends how good your front axle is.. but I find High-reverse is a bit too fast to comfortably reverse a trailer without much slipping of the clutch. I mention the front axle because the kingpin bushes on my tractor are very worn, making steering heavy, especially in reverse; if the axle was bett...

Re: Hello from a newbee

From here, it looks in pretty good condition, and mostly complete - although it is missing the hose between the air filter and manifold, so put that on your shopping list, although the engine will start up without it. Is there oil and water in it? Have you tried on a battery, does it turn over? A ca...

Re: Rear pto shaft size

Have you tried using the backhoe with the front pump, is it fast enough? Because if you could pipe the return from the backhoe into the loader frame, you would have a similar layout to any modern backhoe-loader, and very like the early JCB's which were built on a Fordson Major chassis; with one, fro...

Re: fitting new wiring loom

Where were you thinking of fitting the fuse - between the dynamo and control box? Or somewhere else in the loom? Personally I wouldn't alter the new loom at all, assuming you get one which fits the tractor nicely, because every new terminal will be somewhere that can possibly corrode and cause unrel...

Re: Rear pto shaft size

I'm back from holiday, full of questions.. :D Is the pump repairable, have you had a look to see what has happened to it, have you looked inside it, did it suddenly stop pumping or has it gradually got weaker in output/pressure? A pump is only 2 gears inside a casing, there isn't much to go wrong, i...

Re: New Fordson Super Major Owner

Hmmm, I hope that implies that they have changed the transmission from single-clutch to live-drive (see our conversations on this subject in other threads here in recent weeks), so that the high-low lever's positions have changed, from 'up' to select low ratio, to 'down'? This must be a serious bit ...

Wow that looks great as it is.. although I am not a paint-and-polish person, I like to see machines in their working clothes. There is certainly nothing wrong with its brakes, they held it easily when you stopped half-way on to the truck :) Big wheels + wheel weights (+ diff-lock of course), it must...

Re: Pulling 3 bottom plow

You're not far off.. Narrow your front furrow a little, and maybe lengthen the top-link to let the back bottom/body in a little deeper.. then alter your ploughing depth and/or skimmers to bury all the grass? It looks nice light soil, I can see why so many Scots left the rocky hillsides and wet boggy...

You may be a 'grown man of 50' but you can still enjoy playing with tractors, and the childhood memories they bring back.. From the I & T manual: Con-rod bearings: desired clearance 0.002-0.0035; max allowable clearance 0.005. Crank should be reground if taper exceeds 0.001 or out-of-round 0.0015. Main bearings: desired clearance 0.0025-0.004. It doesn't say, but it's an American-published book so I guess the units are ...

Re: spliting a tractor

Have you got the pto engaged at both levers, the one by your left leg, and the one at the back of the tractor? There is no secret trick we can tell you about.. you just have to have the clutch plates centred in the cover, then have the engine and transmission straight and level with each other, then...

Re: Alternator advice

I think ... power should come from your ignition switch, through the ignition light, and then to the small terminal on the alternator? And I think , that this should be similar to the dynamo, so the existing wiring shouldn't have been altered too much. The output from the dynamo would have went to t...
