Re: live grive gearbox
Re shepps response about the 2 oil seals in the PTO auxiliary gearbox I took the super major topping yesterday, no problems, and it was hard going in very thick grass and feg. When I got home I parked up and this morning there was a large pool of oil under the gearbox drain plug. It seems therefore ...

Re: live grive gearbox
Thanks for all the replies. The gearbox is a complete unit. On the present set up (dead drive) I am losing oil from the gearbox and presume that it is leaking from a seal on the output end of the gearbox and is then coming out of the split pin in the bell housing. With this in mind I will want to ch...

live grive gearbox
Hi, I have acquired a live drive gearbox to replace a dead drive one in my 1962 super major. It comes complete with dual clutch which is in great condition. Not being conversant with this type of work are there any things that I need to know about the fitting? I well need new gaskets to fit gearbox ...

Re: Spitting back end from gearbox
Hazzard, if it's only leaking seals it's an easy job. First make sure to lower the oil level in back transmission so it stays under the oil seals. Then you remove brake pedals, springs and stuff where needed. It's possible to renew the seals without removing the shaft. Put a wood screw into the sea...

Spitting back end from gearbox
My super major has quite bad leaks coming from the shaft on which the clutch and brake pedals pivot. Is it a big job? I know seals and bushes are available but would appreciate some advice from someone who has done it, with decent instructions if possible please.

Re: Simms injection pump
:eyes: If you want to give it some extra lube, you can unbolt the drainpipe banjo bolt and squirt som sae 30 oil into the pump housing.Remember to clean and lube the small filter on the pump. Ticking sound could be from the injection pump drive, thats the "major sound ". Thanks again, I'll try the sa...

Re: Simms injection pump
Vacume pump is lubricated by the diesel that leaks from the pump elements, and does not require further attension besides cleaning of the little air cleaner under the little round cover bolted on top of the pump rack. I add a little ATF in the diesel ,I Think it is good for the injection system Than...

Re: Front axle bolts/sump pin removal
To be honest I was wanting the sump off to replace the oil seals on the clutch end and to clean the oil strainer. My mechanic friend says leave the strainer alone (!), take the engine out, remove the flywheel, do the seals and put engine back in. Simples !! Have seen some scary pics of oil strainers...

Re: Front axle bolts/sump pin removal
The axle bolts will be hellishly tight in their bores. Heat is difficult to appy due to the thickness of the axle beams. Unscew the nut a turn and a half and clout with a sledgehammer. You will get them out, but some of the nuts may not survive the procedure. Best, Adrian. https://i.postimg.cc/brjP...

Re: frothy water
Sounds very much like a blown cylinder head gasket or loose cylinder head bolts which are allowing combustion gases from one or more cylinders into the cooling system and pressurising the coolant - the froth is the escaped gas. You could try checking the cylinder head bolts for tightness, to do thi...

frothy water
Has anyone experienced frothy water in their major's radiator water? My 1960 Power has new radiator, it froths up after a bit of light work and spits water out of the overflow. If I take the radiator cap off the water is very frothy. Any clues please?

Re: Front axle bolts/sump pin removal
Plenty of heat on the threads, they seem to grow together, yet I have known some who had problems with the loosening, not my experience! and drill, tap and pull out with a slide hammer would be my approach on the pin. Think I may resort to plenty of heat on axle, put the nuts back on and find a big...

Re: Super major levelling box
Got it sorted....welded the adjusting handle then ground it down to fit the (enlarged) socket, shimmed the threaded shaft to make it fit properly, all working, not as good as new but after 60 years of work it will be ok !

Super major levelling box
Has anyone tried to restore a levelling box on a super major hydraulic drop arm? Mine is completely worn out, there seems to be a brass bush in the housing that holds the revolving thread of the drop arm but there are washers inside the housing that appear to be worn also and the adjusting handle is...

Yes you are very correct about the internet. Glad you never took my words the wrong way. And I envy you folks that could move a loader/forklift etc like they were race cars.
