Bodywork wise, the bits that often go missing are the side panels covering the engine from debris dropping off the tracks, these fetch several hundreds of pounds if you can find a pair. Many were fitted with a raised air intake to reduce the dust drawn into the engine. The exhaust is also taller tha...

If you know about the skid unit, additional crawler related issues are track condition (how worn grouser plates are), condition of rear sprockets (these can be turned to wear either side) should not be too pointed, idlers on bottom have replaceable "tyres" these wear on the insides and cause the tra...

Glad it is all OK Mike, I haven't installed my own piece of rocking horse manure yet but might get a chance this winter.
Thanks to both Brian and yourself, glad it all worked out!

One piece of advice if removing the head is to remove injectors first as the nozzle tips protrude below the level of the head and are easily damaged.

Could be a perished diaphram or the seal around the glass sediment bowl which has hardened. Either can let air in, if the engine is demanding a lot of fuel (ie heavy work) then it may pull in air rather than fuel. I have had a few problems with a poor seal with the rubber to glass bowl, although the...

Live drive badge

Does anyone know what "live drive" badge should be fitted to a 1963 super major, I think earlier models had a metal badge on the front grill, but am I right in thinking later machines had a sticker on the bonnet towards the back.
Any information appreciated!
Thanks,
Ed

Its a DAR for a super major Roadless I'm after, 000'nd series valves are more common but as you point out not really compatible (ive heard an adapter plate can be made up but not seen it myself)

I'm after a DAR for the Roadless as I believe they will fit the super major as well as the Dexta, I've got a spare auxiliary valve for a diesel/power major kicking about in the shed.

Looks like the rear wheels are off a later machine as got 6 wheel weight bolt holes, seems odd the extra traction from slightly larger tyres would be somewhat offset by the loss of front wheel drive. I think it was common to find 38 rather than 36inch rims on the back of the 6/4 machines and corresp...

Just thinking about it a bit more, being cranked over at high speed decompressed using the starter would be bad news for the push rods which would probably not be fully engaged in the rockers. Hand cranking with it fully decompressed would probably help "free" up the engine in very cold conditions a...

not having experienced starting a fordson using a decompression lever I wont argue, they are used on other applications such as gardners for starting on the handle as well as the ubiquitous single cylinder dumpers/mixers. As already mentioned if lifting the valves would cause contact when starting o...

I tend to favour a straight 30 weight oil for the engine but Dad has been using "universal" for years in his power major in engine/gearbox & backend without a problem. Cold start button is on the pivot where the stop control comes out of the fuel pump. Should push in slightly and allow the rack to m...

Forgot to mention the sledge and then flat 8 grab to get maximum use from it - £250+ for each. Don't forget running costs, string, new tines these are the regulars, every year we try and do a bigger job such as replacing all the springs on the sledge, renewing main plunger bearings (£50 each!) Plus ...

I'd agree with the sentiments above, acrobats can fetch up to and above £100 but if you look around farms sales etc £25 can pick one up, wufflers are getting pretty scarce, we have 3 but only 1 is in very good order if you find one for under £100 it probably needs new tinwork. Tedders more plentiful...

50-55hp runs it OK below that don't know, depends how heavy the crop is, how steep the land, and whether you have a sledge on the back too. Any fordson major will handle the outfit fine, two stage clutch is advantageous.

Baler is New Holland super hayliner 268, surprisingly most bits are still available off the shelf from my local new holland agent albeit at a price - nearly 100 pounds for main plunger bearings some bits are more reasonable and most consumables like pickup tines can be got from aftermarket sources c...

Baling and hay raking

Bit late in the year for hay making but with the weather conditions we've had this year had to take any opportunity going! http://www.fotothing.com/photos/afc/afc968770e3221f51e4f36228f797829.jpg With the price of hay this year it was worth going round with the old hayrake to gather up the loose bit...

Between 30% and 50% mixture strength should be sufficient, don't use just 100% anti-freeze it will affect engine cooling and your wallet!

Doesn't seem to throw much oil out for a feed, unless I've got very poor oil pressure! I'll try to get a picture this weekend to make sure its the same place.

Sounds quite a bit of kit, a far cry from the machine I was looking at the other day based on a flamingo (a high clearance massey 35) it had a 24m boom mounted off the front on an old banana loader (as a crude height adjuster), the booms folded down each side when not in use (manually!) and protrude...

Power Major push rod woes

Sorry to be bombarding the message board today, Power Major began playing up by misfiring which quickly lead to blowing back through the air inlet, it was quickly stopped and investigations began. It soon became apparent that the push rods for inlet and exhaust on number 4 were both bent, also the r...

Super Major thread in engine block

I have a threaded hole behind the injector pump which throws a bit of oil out, therefore I presume it must go through into the crank case, for now I have it bunged up with a rubber bung, and fortunately there is not too much crank case pressure so it hasn't blown out yet....however it would be nice ...

Would high tensile grade 8.8 bolts do the job? I can straighten the arms in the hydraulic press. This is a "working" tractor so it is not that important to maintain originality. Thanks for info on the pipe/brackets. I've no idea what the spool valve is off either, other than it's definately a ford of some description as it comes in a ford plastic bag. I'll have another check for part numbers.
thanks again!
