Re: Best Man Speech Advice Needed

Best simple joke that I have heard-

"I have been told that you should only speak in public for as long as you make love in private"

Say that, stand for about half a minute and then sit down. After the laughs carry on with your speech

Re: Pats latest problem

Hi Pat, I ploughed with a Doe Triple D, on the night shift, in 1962 and 1963. Warm autumn nights, 4am, Fritzmier cab, windscreen open, both engines full throttle - I can hear it now. There is a book "The Doe Tractor Story" by Stuart Gibbard available from Amazon for about 30 dollars. Gives history a...

Hesford,

I hope that I'm not talking out of the wrong end but I believe it sits to the throttle side of the dash and that the throttle lever was cranked to accommodate it.

Re: Ransomes plough

Three furrows is a lot for a Major on unbroken clay soil. The tractor has the power, will usually pull 3 furrows in 2nd gear. Wheelslip will be the limiting factor, if you have a Super Major the diff. lock will make a lot of difference. If you drop off the back furrow and replace the second one with...

Re: Majors still earning their keep haymaking

For a couple of years in the 1960's I drove New majors full time on a farm. I loved Haytime. After a the winter ploughing and harvesting roots my tractor (the one I drove!) was filthy. When we cut the hay I washed it down with buckets of water, and cleaned the muddy soil off the wheels with a spade....

Re: finger bar mower

Brian some suggestions Is the cutterbar pointing forwards. The far end should be an inch or so in front of the 90 degree angle from the frame. Try altering the fore and aft angle of the cutterbar by tilting it with the top link. Shouldn't be pointing down too much. Don't be afraid of going a bit fas...

Re: finger bar mower

Brian is the mower new to you or has it suddenly gone wrong? Make and model will help. Where does the clogging occur and is the grass cut properly before it clogs. A properly set finger bar mower leaves an even short stubble, the rotary things chew it off and you can see the result once the hay has ...

Re: cleaning the outside of a radiator?

I would blow it through, from the engine side, with a powerful airline ensuring that you don't touch any of the fins.
Have known people brush them out and knock the fins through 90 degrees and block the airflow.
Watch your temp. gauge and water level.
Recore it only if it leaks.

Re: Oil Pressure

Martin, I've known Majors run for years with low oil pressure. It's an indication of a worn engine.
I would change the oil and filter if it hasn't been done and then carry on flailing.

Re: Putting back her to work

Here in Cambridgeshire in England we always had water in the ditches/dykes which surrounded the fields.
If you were working a E27N hard you kept a bucket and string with you so that you could throw the bucket into the water, get some out, and keep the rad topped up.

Working like that the water in the rad. should be boiling after about half an hour or do you have a pressurised system?

Re: Clouds of White Smoke

How long are you running it and how hot is it getting?
Ideally put it to work on some land pulling anything heavy for a couple of hours.
Head and valves are probably "gunged up" and need a good burning out.
If that fails then do as you suggest.

Re: odd tractor behaviour

Must be the steering.
Worn out steering is just about controlable at low speed. Faster and the you get a "snaking" effect, like a badly loaded trailer.
Stick some weight on the back, mower?, and the problem is ten times worse.
Stick some weight on the front, loader?, and it will get ten times better.

Re: odd tractor behaviour

Have you examined the road surface where the incident occurred. Big hole in road?
Did the base of the cutter bar mower catch the roadside and pull the tractor that way and then it compensated by going the other.
Can't see it being the brakes if it pulled both ways.

Re: fordson super major project

I bought a 1961 Super Major to drive a pto driven small bale baler (International 440).
After I had paid for it I found it to be non live drive.
If you can bale an uneven heavy crop of hay with a standard PTO you are, in my opinion, a proper tractor driver.

Re: engine flush ,good or bad ??

I would leave well alone. Old engines usually have a layer of muck, built up over the years, adhering to non moving surfaces. Using a flushing oil might remove some of this with the result that oilways may get bunged up. If you have put new oil and filter in I would run engine for an hour or so when...

Re: Problems with an A1E air filter throwing oil

If I understand your post correctly your engine is losing oil near the base of the air cleaner. If there are no holes in the bowl and the base is properly secured to the body this should be impossible. Feel round the back of the join and make sure that both parts are fitted tightly together.

Re: ransome finger bar mower wanted

I've used a finger bar mower for years. Ransomes - complicated hitch onto tractor and not very good. International B23 A good mower but spares difficult. For the past ten years I have used a MF 60 or MF 623 (Upgrade). Can still get spares and easy to operate. Finger bar mowing made so much easier wi...

Re: Rear Axle bearing removal

Hi, If the tractor has been standing the seal(s) may have hardened. Mine did and leaked. I then used the tractor to plough 3 acres and the problen disappeared. Guess the oil got hot and the seals softened. No further problems over the next five years. Worth a try even if you drive it round for 4-5 h...
