Re: super major front wheels

Light enough to be carried by a 17 year old youth but too heavy to be carried by a 70 year old man.

Re: Ford 501 sickle bar mower

Used one in the 1960's. As well as 3 point hitch had to be bolted to draw bar or check chain holder on tractor.
Pain in the ar** to fit and to use. MF 732 and International B23 were far better.

Foot throttle was worth it's weight in gold when using a loader. Left hand steering, right hand hydraulic lever, foot for throttle.

Re: Major muffler

Drove a 1953 diesel model with underslung exhaust. When carrying out slow operations like ploughing and with a following wind the exhaust fumes came straight up to the driver. Didn't realise that this was the cause of bad headaches until we changed it for an upright exhaust.

Frothy water sounds pretty much like fenland beer
Scarecrow ought to try a few pints of Elgoods of Wisbech Ales. OK you might just taste the Nene river water but frothy water they are not.
We prefer full glasses of beer in the fens, not those topped with two inches of froth!

Re: Ransome TS82

If the skimmers are set correctly I don't see the need for discs on the front two furrows. A disc on the third should give you an upright firm furrow wall and clean furrow bottom to drive in. Ensures that depth is constant. Disc movement can be limited by use of a short chain.

The limiting factor might be the weight, Too heavy to lift or front wheels in the air!

Re: Fordson Power Major-Live Drive?

James I believe that all "new type" majors had the U bracket under the clutch pedal. Live drive models had a hole through both sides of the U bracket. When using hydraulics, but not PTO, a pin was inserted through the hole so that the 2nd. stage of the clutch was not freed. The hydraulics were then ...

Re: Very Bad Things.....

I got into the habit of leaving tractors and cars in gear when parked. In the UK in the 1960's our winters were much colder than now. Mud on brake mechanisms would freeze and be impossible to free in the morning. Also parked crawler tractors on thick straw overnight to prevent the cracks becoming st...

Re: Dexta Diesel Overheating?

I am no scientist but I understand that water under pressure has a higher boiling point. A proper sealing radiator cap will increase the water pressure and raise the boiling point. That's why we are told not to undo cap when water is hot. Try a new cap

Re: Dexta Diesel Overheating?

I'm a bit puzzled. If an engine overheats to the extent that the revs drop it's likely that is siezing up. If that happens it won't run properly again and will eventually sieze solid. If a diesel engine slows down it's either due to too much load or a shortage of fuel or air. To check for air shorta...

Re: The McConnel Power Arm 'U'

Blackbob,

Good luck with it. Used one in the early 1960's and I'm sure that we replaced the flat belt system with new pulleys and a double v belt. Saved an awful lot of getting on and off the tractor.

Re: Fordson Power Major- Live Drive?

I thought that they all had the u shaped bracket below the clutch pedal. The live drive tractors had a hole each side of the bracket. When using hydraulics and not pto you put a pin in the holes across the bracket limiting clutch travel. The second part of the clutch pto/hydraulics was then permanen...

Re: Front wheel bearing, grease and felt seal

Hi Kjetil, I don't ever remember seeing a seal. I changed a lot of front wheels when tyres were punctured. Always filled the cap with grease when refitting wheel and then pumped grease in via grease nipple until it came out of the back (where the wheel fits on the stub axle.) Used to grease the fron...

Re: fuel line query

Hi Johnee, Had similar problem in the past. The most likely cause is a blocked gauze at the outlet from the tank. Disconnect the pipe below the tank and check that the fuel flows freely. If not remove the outlet and let the fuel run out of the tank. Catch it if you want to save it. Then carefully cl...

Re: Knock in No1

To help identify the location of a "mechanical" knock, put on some ear defenders and position a wooden hammer handle on the outside of one earpiece and put the other end on the block. By moving this end around you should be able to pinpoint the source of the noise.

Re: Reason for oil leaking from oil bath of air cleaner?

RH, encountered similar problems with majors when driving them for a living. Can be difficult to get the rim of the bowl to mate up with the base of the cleaner. Sometimes better to move the fastening ring out of the way, drop it down a little, and the ensure that the bowl and cleaner body are prope...
