Re: 1953 Major air cleaner
I will try and explain my thoughts on the problem. Porteus says that he has "oil all over the place round the air cleaner". If the oil is coming out of the fins of the pre cleaner, at the top, then I agree that there is a problem inside. If oil is coming out at the bottom I think that the joint betw...

Re: 1953 Major air cleaner
I've had the same problem, even when I was driving Majors for a living. Its easy to screw up the fastener with a gap between the bowl and top part of the cleaner. It looks OK from the visible side. When I thought that I had got it right I used to twist the bowl round to make sure that it had seated ...

Absolute idiot. If he doesn't kill himself first, the front of the engine will be starved of oil.

I know that they are only harrows but I always feel a bit shakey when I see anything attached above the rear axle line. Turn over backwards very easy.

If you need grills (chaff screens) to keep bits out of your radiator, on a working tractor, thats fine. If you are restoring the tractor to be like an original I would pay the £55!

Re: Wheel weights - what is their function?
Adrian I will try to help. When ploughing or carrying out any operation where wheelslip could be a problem weight is added to the rear of the tractor. Tyres (inner tubes) can be filled with saline and weights added to the rear rwheels. Extra weight is particularly useful when ploughing stubble or gr...

To add to the debate, Hydrocut, made by Chamberlain and Pettit from Sudbury in Suffolk UK made a circular saw type hedgecutter in the 1960's. It had an oil reservoir above the pto and a hydraulic pump driven off the crankshaft at the front. There was a frame over the fuel tank which allowed a hydrau...

Re: oil leaking from air filter
Forgive me if I'm stating the obvious but are you absolutely sure that the circular joiner, (tightened with the screw fixing) is over top and bottom lips at the back of the cleaner. It's easy to have a 12mm gap at the back and think its done up ok.

Re: Another oil leak
I had this problem wih a Super Major which I bought a few years ago. It had been standing still for some time. The oil came out of the hub just as yours. I had to cut and bale hay, with no time to repair it. I filled up the oil every two days and than it stopped leaking. (After about 10 hours work) ...

"Whoa there" English phrase for slowing down or stopping horses which were travelling too fast. "Examine the evidence" Phrase used by detectives, I might have been one, before jumping to conclusions. We have here a tractor engine which starts and runs (only for a short time). So we forget batteries,...

Re: Dexta died and will not start :(
A quick fix, rather than draining the tank. Turn off the fuel tap below the tank. Undo the outlet pipe. Take a simple cylindrical pedal cycle pump. Cut the rubber pump outlet tube down to about 20mm. Open the tap, there won't be much fuel running out if it's blocked and give 3 or 4 sharp pumps into ...

Whenever you need to register an old vehicle in the uk its well worth checking with DVLA first. Most registration numbers were transferred to the DVLA in the1970's? and computerised. Any vehicle with an registration number which was computerised can retain the same number and get a tax disc. Check i...

Re: Throttle Rod Clips - are they safe?
When about twelve years old I was rolling with an E27N paraffin engined tractor when the throttle rod uncoupled. A ball end came out of a cup joint. The engine raced and I thought it would blow up. I got her out of gear, jumped off and ran. After a few minutes the engine was still racing. I made a c...

Not a Ford Major type that I have seen before. Guess not Major because:
Centre part is too long. Not seen a centre part with a flat side and not seen a link end with a hole in (Pic 3)Unless it came from a Dexta or newer models -I know nothing about them at all!

I think it's the momentum caused by the movement of the ram that makes small balers so dangerous. You can't stop a baler like you can a combine header.

Re: Baler reccomendations
Jerry, I don't know how much baling you intend to do or what experience you have of balers. I have been using small balers for the past 50 years and lately have had an International 440 baler to bale about 1000 bales per year.(Baler cost me £400 and I sold it for the same 5 years later) 1. In my opi...

Having spent some time using a threshing machine (mill) in the 1960's I can offer a few suggestions about the baling part of the operation. At the far end of the thresher, away from the tractor is a fitted straw trusser. The straw was normally dropped loose from the thresher onto an elevator which l...

I think the extra gearbox section may be a "Howard Reduction Box" - fitted originally on majors for rotavating, powered rotavator at right angles to direction of travel. Have just registered my super major and have a new oblong front number plate.
How can I fix it without spoiling it by bolting it to the tombstone.

I've got both my Super Major badges which have fallen off the bonnet. I've tried super glue and other glues but they fell off again!
I dont want to drill through them, so how can I keep them on.
