Re: Fixing bolts for front wheel weights

Maybe they figured out that they didn't need square holes if they were using their own style of bolts and wanted the NP to look a bit different in quality. A round hole is far less likely to suffer from stress cracks than a square one as it has no corner weakness. Just a theory as i can't think of a...

Re: Fixing bolts for front wheel weights

I know the fordson uses a square headed bolt, but alot of other manufacturers used outside mounted weights (front and rear) which could be added to depending on requirement. It's far easier to put a carriage bolt through the wheel with a nut on the other side to hold them in place and slide the weig...

Could it be a non-original aftermarket drag link? Sandy may know if this type was used from factory

Re: Fixing bolts for front wheel weights

The reason for the square holes is that carriage bolts were traditionally used for wheel weights, the holes are 1/2 inch square, same as the square section under the head of a carriage bolt so they can be tightened without the need to hold the other end

Re: What sealing compound for Liners

What i was always taught was that the head gasket seals the top of the liner and the sealer around the flange is to stop corrosion in the flange counterbore by preventing any coolant/water from getting in. We always used wellseal around them, but as Emiel says use only a very small amount of whateve...

Looks like the grease nipple is snapped on the back axle, a good greasing will very often stop the seal leaking

Re: Bleeder screw washer

Good thinking Sandy, it will certainly seal better if it's softened. If you can find a crack i have some old pump bodies here, i can cut one through at the point of the crack and see how thick the metal is there and whether it can be TIG welded

Re: Bleeder screw washer

I would say if there is a crack it will be on the outside. Try cleaning the outside of the pump at the top with some fine sandpaper and see if you can see any signs of a crack

Re: Over running clutch

The problem with a single blade mower on a Major is having to have the pto engaged to use the hydraulics, at low revs the mower acts as a flywheel and tends to 'overtake' the engine causing it to hunt and without an over-run clutch on the pto it will break the shear bolt in the pto shaft, if a shaft...

Sounds like a good plan. Given the problem you describe originally it would make sense that the contact should occur higher up the quadrant, keep us posted with the results

Re: 3000 hydraulics

I found this where it says the I&T manual gives a different measurement to the Ford manual. Also read about having to build the cam surface up with weld and re-profile it due to an original not being available but i can't remember where i saw it https://www.yesterdaystractors.com/cgi-bin/viewit.cgi?...

Re: 3000 hydraulics

I'm no hydraulics expert Shepp, but if the cam is worn on the rockshaft at it's upper end would this cause your problem, not putting enough pressure on the pin to stop the lift? Like i said i'm no expert, just trying to come up with ideas!

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

I agree, i wouldn't run one without the filter either. The lads who used to do it didn't own the tractors so didn't care about the consequences, the boss wasn't too happy when he found out what they were doing though!

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

It might well cure the high revving too, he said it revs to 2000 with the air pipe removed. The local lads hauling hops back to the farm used to remove the air pipes on the Majors when they got to the road as they revved higher and were faster without the filter connected

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

Looking at an old Ferguson manual it says the bottom of the tube should be immersed in the oil, so maybe i am completely wrong, the older i get the easier i get confused!

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

There seems to be a 2 views on the oil level in the bowl. Some say the air should pass through the oil in the bowl, while i was always taught that the level should be just below the bottom of the intake pipe so the air turns 180° over the top of it as Shepp describes. I have always filled the bowl t...

Re: Pigtail overflow pipe leaking excessively.

Thats a shame, the lift pump is usually the culprit when they are on the injector pump. You'll have to do as Sandy says, remove the side plate and see if you can see an obvious problem

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

The pipe looks a little bit suspect at the manifold end (or is it just my failing eyesight!) maybe it's collapsing in causing a restriction? Something is partially blocking the airflow to the engine when its all connected

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

Looking at the pic again i still think the filter is way too close, it's touching the exhaust manifold. The oil in the filter must be nearly boiling, if nothing else the engine is drawing in hot air, not ideal for combustion and efficiency.

Re: Low engine revs + air cleaning issue

I suppose engine wear and the amount of oil being breathed might be a factor, but as you say, re-packing the filter with appropriate gauze should be possible
