Re: sump plug

Hi Nick, this is the sump plug from a super major. The older ones were larger with (i think) a UNF thread, this one has a finer thread, not sure what it is. The head is a bit chewed but it's still usable. For reference it's the same plug used in the Ford D series Cargo lorry engines, not sure if the...

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer

Hi Sandy, apologies for going slightly off topic but the bit about government regulations is very interesting. Modern diesels fitted with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) require an automatic DPF regen when the ECU senses soot level reaches 40%, the ecu injects up to 8 times the amount of fuel (pos...

Re: Finally finished!

The 2 Majors lived together with a builder for about 40 years so it's highly likely that parts got swapped over after the first one died, it would certainly explain alot of the wrong parts that were fitted. The Power Major had a loader and a forklift on the back and the last time it was serviced ste...

Re: Finally finished!

Hi Sandy, i turned the starter rod over as it was chewing through the starter boot (another quality aftermarket part!), the gear lever was on the tractor when i got it but what you say makes complete sense as it is very close to the seat when in 2nd and reverse with the seat pushed right back. I ass...

Re: Finally finished!

Thanks Sandy. The block was badly cracked and it had no nose cone or seat when i got it and the wheels were wrong. I tried to keep it as original as possible and only used a Super block as I had one kicking around from an old JCB that had siezed many years ago. The steering track rod ends were badly...

Re: Finally finished!

This one is not having lights, they plan to use the pulley for an old cider mill and as there is no need for them they would just be in the way. It runs really well, i need to connect the pto to something to adjust the clutch (the pedal is a bit high) and as you say, give it a day of hard work to be...

Re: axle check chain bracket threads stripped

I agree Henk, making your own is a good way to make them smaller. For a purely practical solution i thing the easiest way would be to fabricate some new brackets using both mudguard bolts and any remaining good bolt holes on the axle to attach them. They won't look original but if the tractor is jus...

Re: axle check chain bracket threads stripped

Why not just drill the holes out slightly larger, tap new threads in them and use bigger bolts?

Re: Starting an engine

Hi Jim, as Sandy says, check the compression as you may have stuck piston rings if it has stood for a long time. Try removing the air pipe from the manifold and firing a blowtorch down there while turning it over, if your glow plugs are shot it will give you the heat you need to start it without res...

Re: axle check chain bracket threads stripped

If the implement doesn't touch the ground (fertilizer spreader etc) then relatively tight but for a mower, cultivator etc then I always have 2-3 inches of sway on the implement. If the chains are too slack the implement can swing violently when in the raised position but if they are too tight it can...

Re: axle check chain bracket threads stripped

I have seen a Major that just had a piece of angle each side drilled and bolted onto the mudguard bolts that held the check chains, that was used on a mower with no problems. I guess it depends whether you want it to look correct or just be practical

Undo the 8 bolts that hold the axle trumpet on the rear casting and turn it 180°, the holes on top are the same as the bottom

Re: 1954 FMD - Injector pump not pumping

Thats a good point Rob, i have noticed that diesel seems to evaporate alot easier than it used to, hadn't given the recent change any thought but it would certainly be interesting to see what the difference is. Maybe Vlad was trying to destroy our engines so the world had to drive Ladas!

If you do remove the pump make sure you mark the couplers as it is possible to put it back together 180° out!
