Re: Major Hydraulics 'click' off when using log splitter

Just to clarify, do you fix the tractor hydraulic lever in the up position to give constant pumping? There is a hole through the lever and quadrant you can stick a nail or pin through to keep the lever up on Power Majors, but perhaps yours is different? Dave

Re: locking fuel caps

I bought a lockable cap for my Green Machine on this site http://stores.ebay.co.uk/ZODIEX-AUTO-PARTS?_trksid=p2047675.l2563 after one from Agriline didn`t fit. It came from Turkey and took about 2 weeks to arrive, £16 all in. I did wonder if I`d ever see anything arrive, but the quality is very good...

Re: FPM back end hydraulics for log splitter

Sounds like you have it right Brendan, I put a 3" nail through the quadrant and lever, theres a hole there ready. The hydraulics stay on constant pumping and the splitter will be up on the arms all the time. I got fed up taking the splitter on / off the rear end and put it on the front end and its w...

Not sure if its any use to you, but I recently bought a John Deere with badly flaking headlight reflectors and my son assures me that modern scooter headlights will go straight in at around £8 each from a motor factors but I havn`t tried it yet. Dave

Re: FPM to work on.

Glad you`re getting the old girl fixed up Richard, following your posts with interest. Yes the hole on the top of the slider gives you constant pumping if you put a clip or 3" nail in there. I do this to drive a log splitter. Dave

Re: PTO questions

Quick update, seals are finished and working. I was hoping to replace one of the axle seals while I was at it but pressure of work means it will have to be done later. Took the top cover off the back axle, it was fairly clean inside or so I thought until I looked at the filter in the bottom. http://...

Re: PTO questions

Made progress over the weekend, the output seal is fitted and the tractor back in one piece. I`ve taken the pto gearbox off today and after reading up on one of Adrian`s old posts, took off the end plate and gave the shaft on the opposite end a bonk with a rubber mallet. This moved the bearings off ...

Re: G'day from a proud owner in Australia

Good choice there Andree, welcome. I`m sure you will find this site helpful either just by reading the topics as they arise and or when asking or offering advice yourself. A lot of the characters on here are really clever and know their stuff, but there are also plenty like me, blundering through bu...

Re: PTO questions

Didn`t get far today but I eventually got the drive gear off with heat and a blunt cold chisel, the last resort but with no damage. The old oil seal didn`t give in easily either, the rubber parts were like steel, hard as hell but it came out a piece at a time with a hammer and old screwdriver. Got t...

Re: PTO questions

Hello Robert, Thanks for your message, yes I planned to do both seals while it was all apart but I see the one I got for the pto gearbox is only about an inch OD so I feel I may have got the wrong one,it looks tiny, time will tell when I get in there unless anyone knows the size needed.I was toying ...

Re: PTO questions

Thanks for the replies, they are most helpful. Whirly your diagram is much clearer than the one I have and it helps to see what is coming. Adrian I was surprised at the rust, believe it or not I drained just under 75 litres of oily emulsion from the gearbox and backend so it must have been either lo...

PTO questions

I`ve started to tackle the gearbox / back axle seals in my FPM. The oil was leaking from the gearbox through and out past the pto shaft so much I had to keep a drip pan underneath the back end while stopped and pour it back in the gearbox before next use. I`ve got it almost ready to split in two, bu...

Re: Rebuild with problems

Hope the starter solves your problems Billy, a nice easy fix if it works. After I rebuilt my engine the starter whinged and whined, I think the extra compression frightened the hell out of it, now a couple of months on its settled down fine. Dave

Re: Fordson county crawler track adjustment

If I remember rightly, the adjuster threads go into a rectangular box shape casting with 4 nuts keeping the end plate on. Don`t undo those nuts, there is a compressed spring providing tension to the adjusters inside with something in the order of 13 tons psi, it could kill if released. Plenty of rel...

Thanks Emiel and Brian that's just what I wanted to hear. I did press the spring down with an open ended spanner just to try and thought if I had a quick fingered assistant it should be possible as long as I don`t shout or tell her off. Dave

Valve spring upside down

Having done some work on my PM engine, on the final valve clearance and head bolt torque I noticed one valve spring is upside down. I havn`t dismantled the head so it must have been this way for 6 years at least. Now, I know there is probably a reason for a right way up but just having got the engin...

Re: Refitting PM sump

Success ! I did get the sump back on but it was real fiddly doing it on my own and keeping the gaskets and seals intact but I got there in the end. I fitted new liners and seals as well as new pistons and big end shells by doing as Brian suggested, taking the wishbone and steering arm off and droppi...

Re: Refitting PM sump

Thanks Brian, will try again on my next day off. I think you hit the nail on the head with your last sentence, I`m the wrong side of 62 now and I find things like sumps and rear wheels are much heavier than they used to be, probably due to increased gravity, I also   notice its harder to g...

Refitting PM sump

Any advice on refitting my PM sump welcome. I took it off to do the liners and now its the one thing that has me stumped  To take it off I blocked it up with wooden blocks with a few thin ones at the top and after the bolts were out just took out the blocks one at a time and the sump dropped d...
