Re: Temperature mystery

Sounds like you've sorted that out now, I think your gauge was miscalibrated on assembly, as they do indeed either work fine or not at all. They might have heated it to 90ºC (or anything similar) thinking it would be ready soon and then there was a change of shift or something similar which meant it...

Looks good. I see you have a soup can too on the exhaust! (Mr. MacGregor - our JCB - has a Cambell's soup can on his exhaust)

I would prefer to use something that can fit nicely and easily (preferably locking on the same way), and you definitely want a good seal.

The oil cap is very similar, but has a sort of red paper-like seal and is stamped ENGINE OIL FILLER. https://i.postimg.cc/13xnFBbV/Davie-2018-H18-8.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/NfNYqjks/Davie-2021-J17-4.jpg This is Davie's one (original one), Billy and Super Billy have replacement ones. Re: Topping with the 1960 Power Major

Good stuff, glad you've got a belt pulley, I would recommend you see how smooth it is and whether it leaks or not before you fit it so that you don't have to remove it later. Here's just one job you can use it for: https://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=8126 . I still work in ...

I don't know that, there's a film if ford and fordson on film 6 that has a very similar one in blue and orange, and I assume the tractor itself has Ford paint as it did just out of Dagenham (this one is actually working in the yard next to the factory).

Re: Muir Hill Major

That's a great find, it's this Major conversion that replaced horses in small yards where handling waggons in ones and twos was std. practise until the end of the old goods train.
In good condition too, only the wrong colour!

It does look like it, presumably the belt pulley would always be on if that's the case.

Re: kfd conversion

Looks like a farm conversion to me, quite a drastic one too as the front casting seems to have been modified shortening the side channels and bonnet. It has the usual non hydraulic top cover with the extras Emiel says are Hannomag, towing doesn't look great. I would say it's a 55-56 Major.

Re: New performance major questions

Unfortunately no, but if you measure them you might be able to find them, I think Ford used Hoffmann bearings but any of the typical bearing companies should have suitable ones. You could also look around a scrapy for a low hour gearbox with good bearings if you can't find them any other way. I reco...

Re: drag link rubber dimensions

I think the ends are the same on the sealed one (they aren't quite on the adjustable one), you could see if Agriline can provide you with some sizes or even rubbers even if they don't list them.

Re: drag link rubber dimensions

Do you have the sealed drag link or the adjustable one? I can't really help you with the sealed type as we don't have one, on the adjustable one there's a rectangular piece of felt clipped on with a bracket.

Re: New user, new project

The flywheel is designed to get through one compression before getting accelerated, with a cylinder not firing that's two compressions, meaning a lot more has been lost before the next cylinder fires, this extra loss means that the throttle will already have to move to a faster setting. The irregular...

I would measure it first, you're just as well to remove the pulley to inspect the bearings if you notice play. I think I'll need a pic of this to see what's happening as I'm not understanding your problem near the radiator cap, see this: https://www.fordsontractorpages.nl/phpbb3/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=...

Good stuff. I would personally try to find good second hand tyres as they'll be far cheaper than new ones, I tend to favour a tread like Billy but that's just me. You want an AC TF2 (176ºF) or equivalent, there are no new ones from manufacturers but there are NOS ones on ebay often. You could look f...

Re: New user, new project

I'm not now understanding your point, when I referred to the next cylinder being no. 4 it was because no.2 wasn't firing, turning 1-2-4-3 into 1-nothing-4-3. This makes the engine run at an irregular speed, as it looses speed when cylinder no.2 should be keeping it up. As a result no. 4 fires at ful...

Re: New user, new project

If the firing order were wrong the engine wouldn't run, what could be checked is the phasing in the pump, but that's an expensive job, it can be done at a later date if required without too much fuss. I don't know what this Major sounds like running on all four, so I can't say whether it's ok or not...

Nice looking Super Major you've got there. I think you want to remove that bolt when you remove the external service plate. I must say it seems the control valve might have stuck in the raising position, with the top off that should be immediately apparent. I don't use a password to post my pics wit...

Then you also have farmers using their tractors hard, they would go for a heavy duty clutch, which was never one with an aluminium cover. The dual clutch was initially sold as heavy duty, but when it failed far too often in heavy conditions the old thick 11" clutch would reappear until the 13" clutc...

Good repair. I might check the torque on the head bolts, I wouldn't loose the pressure cap if possible as it improves cooling.

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer

I would try to find a Major one like the one you posted earlier with a metal spindle to fix your current one, you could always get a second hand genuine one instead, but it's likely to need preliminary work before it's ready. Do avoid plastic ones, and Agriline's one looks like it's a plastic one. S...

It should fit, but look around for the one that is most similar to your one as there are several kinds from aftermarket suppliers, do avoid any plastic spindles as they're as bad as they sound.

Re: Looking for a new or used atomizer

You could get a new Major tap and swap the spindles, it's probably the o-ring that's leaking (Billy's one does and the tap is permanently covered in diesel), alternatively get a new o-ring and remake the spindle handle when the tap's in bits.

I think it's 5 fins per inch on radiators after 1420356, 10 fins per inch on previous radiators that had shutters for TVO engines, both using fins on tubes. It's possible that there was a wee leak there and someone tried to solder it and melted away the solder holding the two halves of the tank caus...
